Like you have the most charismatic all star of all time in will smith in his prime, and one of our greatest actors ever in tommy Lee jones as the straight man, and after the first one you cant make it work? So crazy. And then you wanna reboot it with international, okay cool.. just make a fun story and put it in the men in black universe.. literally could make it a procedural and just given us a cop movie.. but with aliens..

and they fuck it up so badly.

its so similar to ghostbusters. First one is so fucking good and all the sequels just miss the point and magic of the first one. It sucks.

and the special effects in the second men in black movie are so unforgivably bad its insulting. Like why skimp on that when you didnt on the first one? Your budget should double, not half. Its insane.

A friend of mine and I were randomly bored one night, so we threw on suits and sunglasses and went to a local 24-hour grocery store at like 1am, loitered suspiciously, occasionally put a finger to our ears like we were receiving info on an earpiece, bought a cup of coffee, and then left.

We were basically hoping to weird a few people out, and maybe become someone's urban legend they'd eventually post about on some conspiracy theory website somewhere, but the few people shopping in the store and the people who worked there (cashiers, janitors, stock, etc) were just completely unfazed.

2 is insanely mid for the most part but 3 is just as fun and memorable as the first IMO. International sucks fucking dick tho and feels like if MIB got into the MCU (I say this in the most derogatory way possible).

3 is fine, its definitely the best of the sequels by far, but the first is a special movie that 3 doesnt come close to. The first MIB is like.. the first mummy. Or Independence Day. Its special.

Goes to show that not every piece of media needs a sequel, and this is a cycle that has repeated throughout history. Sad thing is it's not just producers and executives milking something popular- audiences tend to be idiots and beg for a sequel to anything popular because they assume if the first one was great, obviously that will just happen again.

Something doesn't have to be bad to be the worst of a set. If you've got three movies you'd rate 10/10 and a fourth movie you'd rate 9/10, the 9/10 is the worst of the four even though they're all good. On the flip side, a 2/10 is the best out of a set that otherwise consists of 1/10s, even though it's not good.

Comparative/superlative adjectives are strictly relative. They indicate nothing absolute on their own.

Shrek is an obvious exception. Shrek 2's place relative to 1 is debatable and I'd probably put them on roughly even footing, but 2 is definitely better than 3 and 4.

Have there ever been sequels to beloved movies that were better than the original? Not just good, but something that blows the first title out of the water. Like, Toy Story 3 was a very good movie, but I couldn't compare it at all to the first.

I remember enjoying 3, but I do specifically remember thinking the production felt like something out of Youtube. Something about the lighting and frame rate? I think it was 60fps which was very strange to see at the time.

Some people think that way about T2. Mad Max comes to mind as like every even movie was better than the odd movies, if I'm remembering their order correctly. But a sequel being significantly better...that's tough. maybe The Dark Knight.
Plenty of series have good or better sequels though. It's quite the fallacy that sequels suck.
