Republican Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa has told confidantes she plans to reveal next week that she won't seek reelection in 2026, multiple sources familiar with the matter told CBS News.
Ernst's announcement is scheduled for Thursday, the sources said. Ernst, 55, has served in the U.S. Senate since 2015.
Spokespeople for Ernst did not reply to requests for comment.
Some Iowa Democrats have already jumped into the race, including state Sen. Zach Wahls, state Rep. Josh Turek, and Des Moines School Board chairwoman Jackie Norris.
Ernst has been evasive about whether she would run for a third term in 2026, but in public remarks earlier this month, predicted continued GOP control of Iowa.

Yeah, I read that earlier. My one thought: Good.

I am obviously most offended by MAGA and sycophants and enablers like her destroying America for their own self-enrichment. But I am also annoyed that none of them even bother to be good, strategic politicians anymore. So they make a dumb joke out of Medicaid cuts, or include shooting a puppy in the face in their book as a positive anecdote. To name a few recent things.

The story is actually crazier than most people give it credit for:

On May 30, 2025, in response to a constituent at a town hall meeting who told her people would die as a result of Medicaid and SNAP cuts in the 2025 budget reconciliation bill, Ernst said: "Well, we are all going to die. For heaven's sakes, folks". In response to subsequent backlash, the next day she recorded and posted on Instagram a sarcastic apology video wherein she walked around a graveyard and insinuated her constituents were uneducated about death, saying: "I made an incorrect assumption that everyone in the auditorium understood that yes, we are all going to perish from this Earth. So I apologize. And Im really, really glad that I did not have to bring up the subject of the tooth fairy as well".

Seems this level of absolute contempt for her own constituents finally came back to bite her.

Oh she's THAT person? Fuck her.

Hopefully a dem replaces her.

It would be dumb to completely ignore polls just like it's dumb to accept them blindly. It's best to understand how they came to that conclusion and learn from it.
