Is everyone working from home?

That is odd that no one was around to greet you. Hope it all works out!

Are you at the right location?

I can definitely see somebody dropping the ball the first day but no one from your team is weird.

Can you ask Security wherever you sign in whether any of them have come in?

On the bright side as the highest ranking member of the team you may be able to make some radical changes under the guise of an emergency.

Send out an email to your team lead and BCC HR, finding out where they are to, document it and just go about your day. Do as much as you can. Check the email status now and then to see if they have responded. They should have had someone to help you figure things out at the very least.

Keeping your mouth shut and doing nothing is always a decent option in bidness.

as someone in a very similar position whos currently struggling with pulling the trigger to leave my current spot Im happy to hear yours worked out and might mitigate a lot of health concerns.

I honestly need to just leave for my own health. Its easy to tolerate cause I dont want my team to suffer but I think you have the right of it here and Im just killing myself instead lol

this is actually more common than you might think, TC. I wouldn't worry about it too much--an org needs some policies for this kind of thing and many just don't think of it.

If you can't find anything to do, then walk around the facilities and meet people, introduce yourself and say you're just checking out the place. At some point you'll probably be given something to do.

Shit like this is one reason a lot of people quiet quit. They get worked to the bone, treated like shit, and their sense of decency gets taken advantage of. Eventually they burn out.

If you do choose to scale back what you're doing...don't forget that you're not "doing less" - you're just stopping with the free overtime. I pray your situation improves one way or another - rooting for you!

Oh you were early. I was going to say, that doesn't bode well for your new job to be that disorganized that they're not even properly onboarding you.

I'd personally recommend lining up a new job first before pulling that trigger. But yeah that doesn't sound healthy to suffer just to keep others from suffering

Good thing it worked out in the end. My first day of work ever was an absolute circus, so its really stressful when things are chaotic on day one.

Glad it all worked out and that youre enjoying it!

Of course...it's sad that many generations of Americans have had to deal with government destroying labor unions, bullshit policies like "at-will employment" which is painted to benefit both parties but usually never does, and the advent of hustle culture and praising people in every profession who go "above and beyond"...it really has ruined the American work culture.

And then top it off with bullshit such as "I only hire people who are already employed", "I don't hire people past a certain age since I don't think they can learn new skills", and "You don't want to burn any bridges so it's my right to treat you like shit otherwise I'll ruin your career to any prospective employers", and, well, the American work culture really sucks.

Top it off with getting paid jack shit - wages have essentially stagnated whereas housing, healthcare, and basic necessities keep getting more expensive due to corporate consolidation - and the average American is working more hours, in shittier work conditions, for less pay, and living shorter lives as a result. Welcome to the American dream!

Exactly.

It just has to be understood that "the American Dream" is the dream of a few hundred obscenely wealthy oligarchs to have even more power and control over US society than they currently do.

That is literally impossible in a free country, which is why the Republican party is all-in on fascism.

It's just sad, because the last time we had obscenely wealthy oligarchs in the late 19th century, we elected governments that held these oligarchs' feet to the fire, protected the public from their worst abuses, prioritized the nation's economy over the privilege of wealthy people getting extra-wealthy, and as a result, we set the stage for the a century of American prosperity and global dominance.

Now, we have obscenely wealthy oligarchs, and we basically just let them run the country instead.
