I still maintain that the Beast Chapel is awful, but perhaps if I did it after going to Greymoor as opposed to before where I got some nice stuff like Thread Storm and the Flea Brew, the fight would have been less challenging. Interesting reward.
No, it still sucks ass. I just spent like an hour on it and I did Greymoor largely fine beforehand. Beast Chapel's boss is genuinely one of the worst bosses in the series so far and easily the worst encounter I've seen in the game.

The ONLY thing that makes it vaguely tolerable is the tool that puts out the mine from her second boss fight in the OG HK. Whenever a bunch of dudes spawn throw them out and hope they clear them. Even then it still is a total crapshoot, not fun in the slightest.

I was about to post that I must be missing something really obvious because I could not progress.

And then I found that I'd checked a spot on the map, marked it as inaccessible because it was gated off, completely missing that there was a ledge right above that I could now reach.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what I did a few hours ago when I asked for help finding L.

Also for those wondering, it absolutely is possible to reach the Hunter's March before you're "supposed" to. If you don't have the mobility skill they want you to have it's still mostly doable, but it's much harder.

I'm kind of glad I went to Hunter's March before fighting Lace. The pogo experience was really useful in that fight. Also the tool I found that basically gives you a one-use shield on your last mask of health, I'd still be fighting her because she 100% broke it.

The trap Hornet uses in the first game is a lot better than I was expecting. I thought it would work like it did in that game, just a static trap for enemies to run into, but it is WAAAAY better.

Your shade did in the first game, I don't see why not. Oh, and my game crashed when I was DECENTLY FAR INTO FUCKING Hunter's March and I think it saved my cocoon.

The cocoon is interesting compared to the shade actually. You were actively weaker until you collected your shade and it was a hostile enemy, so you wanted to kill it ASAP if it was in a boss room. But the cocoon just sits there and gives you full silk when you destroy it, so it seems preferable to just leave it until you need the silk.

Thoughts after Day One.

I know there's a fair few people who've complained about Hornet's down air attack, but...it really fixes every problem I had with Knight's stupid pogo. Like I just couldn't pogo reliably unless I used the long nail charm. The animation was super fast so the actual active frames when a pogo was possible was really tight, and Knight's horizontal movement when doing it was terrible. Call it a skill issue if you want, but it just didn't click for me.

Hornet's is a dash so it has tons of active frames and comes with lateral movement baked in. It's just better than Knight's pogo in every conceivable way. Well, there is one area where it's a little weaker, and that's when you want to bounce straight up and down (which some of the areas do kind of demand). But otherwise, this is a massive improvement. I am 10x less likely to just collide with the enemy doing Hornet's needle spike than I was with Knight's pogo. It's intuitive, it's fluid, it feels good to use. 10/10.

I think soon I'm gonna go back and take on some side quests / grind rosaries to buy stuff. I feel like by this point in Hollow Knight you definitely would have had an extra mask or two, possibly an extra spirit vessel. I've got...none of that. I'm weirdly okay with that though? It makes the game way harder to be sure, but I also feel like even this early on Hornet's offensive capabilities run laps around the Knight. But yeah maybe buying some trinkets from some of the stores will help me out.

I went to the (optional?) Ant area and yeah it's pretty tough. The ants aren't as hard as the birds I fought elsewhere but the birds had an easier runback, so I'll leave the the March alone for now. There's a "class" of enemy that seems really good at parrying. I've been calling them duelists, and regardless of which kind they are they're all really tough to deal with. Especially when other enemies are around.

Yeah, this boss is good...if it didn't have the adds. They just add to much RNG to the mix. Bizarrely, the stupid little fly is the worst one. The crawling one is small enough that I can avoid until it gets slammed by the boss, the big one is so big it usually gets hit by the boss very quickly. But the flying one matches his attack pattern so well they're usually right on top of one another, meaning he's constantly in the way when trying to avoid the boss. And he doesn't seem to get smashed either; or at least he moves so fast he avoids it.

Truly miserable, even with my hypothetical scenario of having Crest of the Reaper, Thread Storm, and Flea Brew alongside the traps. Reminder that someone out there will be gunning for that Steel Soul Run 100% achievement/trophy, and the other one which is to do a 100% speedrun.

Didnt get to play as much as was hoping to since I was feeling sick on release day. Tried playing it while sick but after about 30 minutes I realized that it wasnt going to work out since I wasnt able to fully focus on the game. Played a bit more when I was feeling better.

Stopping this session after beating Lace for the 1st time, Im sure like Hornet in the 1st one that shell be a recurring boss. Early game seems a lot more difficult than the 1st game from what I remember, but Im having a lot of fun. Though I did feel a bit disappointed when the 2 sequence breaks (which was basically using flying enemies by bouncing off of them after a dive bomb to get to a couple areas where that extra boost was needed) I did ended up amounting to nothing.

Haven't found that yet but I found crest of the reaper before fighting moorwing and it's down air is also similar to Knight's. At least I think it was before fighting it. The only real issue I had with Hornet's diagonal pogo was the distance of it. The direction was fine to deal with but the short distance made for some difficulty of use.

Okay, four hours later and still fuck this boss. I know I'm doing myself no favors, grinding him out like this probably undergeared and without rest, but I think it's just garbage design in general.

His actual moveset I've mastered. The adds are the only issue and there's so much randomness to them. It can spawn none for ages or it can spawn them back to back to back. It can kill the adds with its smash attack, but the little fly is constantly zooming around so it's mostly a matter of luck and the big fly is just sometimes outright invincible. It also has to choose to do the smash attack and it can cut it short for no reason I can ascertain.

I shouldn't be having this much variance. If this little asshole scales up the right way, I can see this being as hated as Markoth.

It's a better chase tool. You jump over an enemy running at you and down dash after them, you can actually hit them with it.

Often, in Hollow Knight, if they had a fast enough trajectory, they'd just run under and away from you and you'd have to land to try something to hit it.

Oh, one more kind of spoilery tip. If you can survive the ant area, there's an incredible charm that's kind of hidden away. In the seemingly empty room above the bench, the leftside wall isn't a wall. It leads to a merchant that sells a cracked mask that will prevent your death and leave you on one HP one time.

To parry in Silksong (or Hollow Knight) attack the enemy's swing effect (the white crescent). You'll clink off each other and will take no damage despite being within the hitbox. It's how I beat that big bug because I also fought him without getting the dash first. Took me like... eight tries.

Note that this is not a required tactic for beating the game and I'm only bringing it up because I felt like a big man for being able to parry that guy, who has one two-swing attack with very good telegraphing.

It's still advised to get that dash first. >_>

The "by fire" part is what I think everyone has issues with. Its a tutorial stage with no save points and enemies that are, especially for new players, going to drain more HP than you gain Silk from. There is literally no justification for it. An argument can be made, in bad faith, that the mini boss guarding the entrance is an in-universe "beef gate" deterring players from entering the area until they have explored a bit more, at least getting the Dash, but frankly with a save point nearby I did the Soulslike thing and threw myself at it until I got gud. He's not hard, the double mask damage just makes screw ups punishing. Pro tip: Fuck healing, throwing your Needle at him will actually wreck his ass pretty quick. I think everyone is sleeping on that move, its actually REALLY strong being like 5 nail hits worth of damage right now. If you go into him with a full Silk bar, get in 4 hits while he's stancing up, pop his ass with 2 throws, recover your cocoon and pop him with 2 more throws you can 1 cycle him pretty easy. You don't *need* anything to beat him even without cheese, you just gotta dodge well. Meanwhile you ABSOLUTELY without question need the Dash and hover to progress in Hunter's March (btw, if you're Dashing along a floor and jump at a gap you can actually jump WAY further than if you just try to air dash a gap, you can actually skip a lot of the 1 pogo pad gaps this way).

Eat_More_Beef posted...

Enemies flash a little at their proper parry timing and it sparks way brighter if you parry correctly. IDK how to do it right, I just know a lot of time spamming Attack at them will work with the obvious punish if it doesn't.

Having slept on it, I'm willing to tone down my criticisms a bit largely due to reading there's a way to disable the trapped bench just before Beast Chapel. You can walk thru the left walk of the bench room and there's just a switch chilling there. Not having to wade thru 5 screens of bullshit before taking another stab at things makes it way less frustrating.

A tip for anyone still struggling with the area: Come back with the hover. Makes it WAY easier to line up your pogos since you can just fucking hover til you're directly in line with the red pads. In fact, this is almost required in Chapel Of The Beast proper where one section has the pads spaced out just a bit further than I felt like was possible to simply jump at. Figuring this out was the key for me getting thru the last couple of pogo puzzle rooms.

I took a couple runs at the boss and honestly I think it might be a noob trap boss. Feels like if you're taking full advantage of Hornet's kit it might not be too bad. Don't forget you can heal in midair, 45 degree angle pogo, dash to escape bad situations, and VERY IMPORTANTLY use the damn Thorn Trap tool to help deal with the adds. I'm considering backtracking to the Docks area to buy the Tool upgrade item there, assuming it does what I think it does (allow you to upgrade Tool damage) because while the kunais you get in the jail kinda suck the thorn traps absolutely ball

Also, had a thought last night about how so much stuff does 2 masks of damage. I think, from a lore perspective, there might be a canon reason for this: We've been comparing damage to Hollow Knight where very few enemies deal 2 masks of damage but that's an entirely different character. I think the Knight is just significantly tougher than Hornet, and things that do 2 masks to her might only do 1 to it. Like little dude is literally built different. The Knight is slower, more versatile. Hornet seems to be PURE GLASS CANNON BABEEEEEY focusing on mobility to stay alive. The handful of times we've seen her get hit in cutscene land she kinda gets wrecked.

I doubt I'll ever get confirmation of this bit of head cannon, since it would require the Knight to be playable in Silksong and then for it to take less damage from some enemies, but at least to me it makes a certain kind of sense. Of course shit wrecks Hornet, she's designed to not get hit.

If it was about babies we'd have universal maternal care. There would be no charge no matter how complex the delivery. But its not about babies, is it?

Are the 2 mask hits at least a bit more telegraphed? What kinda sucked in HK was that many non-explosive attacks didn't look like it would that hard

You'd come across that round bug in the crossroads, and bam 2 masks gone, then you don't get hit like that again until fungal wastes bomb flowers

The red beetle with giant bony axe kicking my arse rn.
Bounce on his head, the only risk is if he tries to jump at you, but he seems to only do that if youre far away enough.

Does anyone know what all the items from the big blacksmith bug do? There's the trap and a few other things. I think i bought the tool kit that cost 180. The descriptions aren't too good and the currency is such a pain to grind lol

Crafting kit increases damage of your tools, tool pouch increases number of tools you can carry at once. There's 4 upgrades for each.

The trap she sells is that spiky ball shit she throws at you in hollow Knight. It's incredibly strong. Great for bosses or other tanky enemies.

The bell increases the amount of time you can be on fire (e.g. running on lava) before taking damage. It doesn't help you against fire based attacks at all.

That was definitely an intense fight. Phase 2 really amped it up.
