Even though I have Below Zero installed I've never completed it, it just doesn't match the vibe of the first game.

I can point to a lot of small things like the sea truck being lame or the map being smaller but I don't think these are really the issue. I think it's just the sense of mystery and wonder and alone-ness in the first game. You're thrown in with no information, no tools, no companions or voices to talk to or even your own voice, no other NPCs. Just you and this hostile but beautiful world and you have to make a home and uncover a mystery from finding logs. You're not told what to do or anything, you're just given very vague hints.

They threw out so much of that in below zero in an attempt to tell a gripping narrative with characters and such but I don't think it worked.

I know I'm in the minority, but I actually liked Below Zero more. It took me a loong time to finish Subnautica because that shit is terrifying. I finished Below Zero with much less terror lol.

And I wasn't bothered at all by the more character driven narrative. I'm curious to see which direction they go with Subnautica 2

I got to the point in BZ where you have to explore on land and I just stopped caring. If I do finish it itll just be for the sake of finishing it.

I also started a new game in the original and its just a better experience.

I've never finished Subnautica. I played it on PC in VR but for some reason, there is a point where the controller stops responding and only K/M works (which is a bit awkward to use in VR).

That's fine. I'll still play it. I can always use cheats/mods if it's too much for me

I suppose if one has thalassophobia, it would be. I thought it was awesome, at least up to the point I couldn't move with the controller.

Nothing like that first time hearing "Detecting multiple leviathan class lifeforms in the region. Are you certain whatever you're doing is worth it?"

Below Zero definitely isn't bad. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves Subnautica. It just wasn't as mind-blowing, and despite the new features, it all felt a little smaller-scale.

I've done practically everything there is to do in both games, and if Subnautica is even half as good when it's fully released (which will probably take several more years), I'll be playing that too.

Subnautica is my all time favorite game
Below Zero is also good, just not as good as the original

I've gone back and played each 3 or more times, great game
