Yet you get 2 pork chops, with potatoes, 2 eggs and toast for 11 bucks. But 2 eggs, 3 bacon and toast at a chain is like 10 bucks.

Like how the fuck does that work out?

On possibility might be that big chains have more leeway to have a loss leader to give the impression of low prices, and make up for it through the volume of other dishes. A local place needs to make up the price of every dish they sell.

Pretty much this. But for my money, that local breakfast place is usually WAY better, so I don't mind paying the extra.

I dunno, all I've noticed is that you cannot find a reasonable pancake anymore. You order a pancake and it's the size of a manhole cover. And they're not marketed as "gigantic pancakes." They're just pancakes.

Pancakes might be more labor intensive because you have to make the batter?

Whereas chain places might just get frozen ones?

One of the things I miss about Chicago was getting takeout from the Golden Apple. You could get pancakes as a side and they were so damn good.

One thing I love about going to the Great Smoky Mountains area is just all the wonderful options you have for breakfast. Yes you have things like IHOP, Waffle House, and even Shoneys but you have a loads of pancake places plus some other interesting options (i.e. one place has animatronic chickens that sing and dance).The one thing I will give a heads up about is that at most places if you order something like strawberry pancakes you get regular pancakes with a strawberry topping instead of getting pancakes with strawberries in the pancake.

If you are ever around the Smoky Mountains stop at Crockett's Breakfast Camp. Their pancakes are massive in fact any breakfast you get there is huge.

Chains are almost always cheaper than smaller businesses since they make up for it in volume. That's why Walmart destroys all the mom and pop stores when they come to town.
