I honestly disagree with the discourse surrounding the series, the girls are underage but so is the protagonist. And it's not like it's sexual or anything

And who are these people?

This is just a theory, but my guess is many people can't really role-play a video game character and instead self insert themselves into whatever character they are playing. Hence why you have so many people say they are uncomfortable playing the games since they take place in high school.

its in a weird zone because yes, the characters are underage but if the player isnt then I can see why people may be sussed out, especially if theyre using the game to self insert

On the other hand, the adult romances in persona 5 arent weird for the irl player if they arent underage, but in universe its incredibly strange

So persona 5 basically manages to make both adult and teenage romances weird as hell for the opposite reasons

I'm glad that, as a child in the early 90s and just getting into video gaming, my mother taught me the difference between what is real, and what isn't.

It's "Diddy" to make a game with teenagers dating teenagers now because an adult could play it? Does it encourage pedophilia for a teenager to play a game with adults dating adults? This sounds like it leads to no romance games.

Ive played every persona game. Theres still plenty of side eye worthy stuff in each of the modern titles

The older ones aren't exactly free of it either. P2 has a writer insert who has some pretty "questionable" nonsense as well.

Persona has weird shit that clashes with its themes, particularly in 5. The games can be good and we can still discuss the weird shit

Yes Ken is a romance option in 3 portable if you play as Femc

TBH, I think the series would be able to get away with more if it focused on college students. It definitely is creepy to sexualize 16 year olds.

while you can make an argument that ann is sexualized in 5, i don't think you can really make that argument for any other female mc in the games

I do think people are a little over sensitive these days. From my understanding of the series, teenagers are kinda the intended audience despite the M on the box. Age rating doesn't actually indicate intended audience, as hard of a concept that can be for some people to grasp.

Not that that justifies the whole students dating teachers thing (that won't ever not be weird) ... but

If you're squicked out by teenagers dating teenagers in a fantasy game made for teenagers, perhaps you're too old for it?

True, but they emphasized her curves and she had victory poses that accentuated them big time. The model/singer chick from P4 wasnt nearly as curvy, but they emphasized that she was really popular with the guys and the media. I think that Ann was only really sexualized with her outfit in the dungeons. She had the body of a grown woman and the other girl was built like a normal teenager.

But then again, there are teenagers who have more mature body types and thats probably really hard for them to deal with in some ways (having adults flirting with them). Its rare for them to get any representation because its a touchy subject. Either way, I would have personally dialed that back if I had been in charge

Yeah if it was just the 11 year old crushing, that would be one thing. If the MC is a teen and liking them back that's messed up.

I haven't played P5 (Got p5Royal from the humble bundle last month) but from my understanding Kawakami is the one standout that makes it weird. Persona 3 and 4 had age-appropriate relationships between the characters and nobody made a fuss. Besides that femc option apparently.

there are like 4 or 5 romanceable adults. I feel it's due to what post 4 said that they probably put it so that the adult audience wouldn't feel weird with engaging on the romance stuff, but it makes it feel weird in-universe

The kamoshida arc isnt even actually about the pedophilia somehow

Like that absolutely should be a major part of it but if the game is fine with the kawakami romance, then its really only critiquing the fact that hes physically abusive and abusing his position as a coach over team members desperate to play.

I dont like the adult romances in universe in general because I dont want to believe these cool characters are into high schoolers, but the kawakami romance in particular really should not exist in the same game as kamoshida
