Really, dude? I read the entire first topic at least and many people actually engaging in the topic were saying this isn't something to be celebrated and are fully aware of the rippling effects this will have.

I did. I kept refreshing until it hit 500 then I went to sleep.

I chose my words correctly. I said "many people", not all people. And I said "who were actually engaging with the topic", to exclude those worthless drive-by posts.

What you said is just disingenuous because you're making it seem like those topics were made just to celebrate and that's all anyone is doing. The people I recognize on CE as regulars and actually like weren't doing that.

The only thing I can think of why MICHALECOLE would get almost insta-banned for that topic was if he posted the video of the shooting, and I dont remember seeing that in the post. Could have happened and would explain the quick and harsh moderation. If he was banned for that topic alone then definitely one of the more questionable bans Ive seen on this site.

They aren't the same because your post made them not the same. The second topic had no equivalent post and didn't turn political other than site moderation politics.

Was he? Is it? Human life has value for sure and he didn't deserve to die, but the man himself said empathy is a woke leftist idea. Why empathize for this shooting over the hundreds of others that have happened this year.

You're asking to show empathy for a man who said empathy is bad.

For that matter, feeling empathy for somebody doesn't have to include wishing overall that they hadn't died. One's opinion on a given person's death is the sum of many factors, only one of which is a baseline empathetic wish for everyone to be able to live a happy, comfortable life. It is very possible to both feel sad that Kirk's kids are going to grow up without their dad and also feel happy that Kirk won't be espousing any more harmful rhetoric or using his platform to promote harmful political agendas.

People are complicated. There's no reason to expect our opinions on those people to be any less so.

Mods are going crazy over this. There was a new comic featuring Red Hood that was released yesterday by DC. The author of thay comic made remarks about Kirk and not considering police human beings which got her fired, the book canceled and retailers will receive a full refund for the issue (this is unprecedented in comics and a huge deal) and the thread was completely nuked on the comics board. Not locked, just disappeared, even though it was on topic and largely wasn't about Kirk, but the actions of the author. No attempt at moderation, just nuke the whole thing. Crazy

It's ironic that GameFAQs is deleting topics on the subject due to politics, but the /r/politics subreddit is/was deleting posts on it due to being non-political.

I don't know where to go to discuss people getting shot.

So the creator of the first topic got banned because somebody else made a post in the topic that (allegedly) pivoted the discussion to be more political, but the creator of the second topic did not get banned because somebody else didn't make such a post? We're deciding whether or not to punish topic creators based on the discussions other people choose to have in their topics?

Yes? Moderating based on the likely responses to your post has always been policy. It's literally in the definition of trolling, for example.

We're all assuming he was banned for the topic here solely because that was the topic we saw. That may not actually be the case, and short of a mod telling us as much we will probably never know for sure. The topic was locked well before being nuked, which may indicate a mod cleaning up remaining posts rather than that topic being the cause of the ban.

The two topics in question were virtually identical in the content of their opening posts. They were equally likely to elicit "political discussion." The observed distinction between them isn't a matter of likely responses, it's a matter of *actual* responses, and that's a pretty ridiculous basis for deciding how severe a punishment to attach to the moderation.

look on the board list under social boards. I could link it but Im not sure if thats moddable. But yeah its one of the more sensible politics boards that Ive found. Sensible in that I agree with them lol

Never even heard of the guy until yesterday. And they referenced him on a South Park episode I watched a month ago. I guess I didn't know what they were parodying. I thought it was that meme of the guy sitting at a table on a college campus that has a sheet that says "Prove me wrong".
