I'm at the end of Act 2 and I keep waiting to get double jump. There are a few places in the game where there's just no way to reach them, so I'm guessing there's a double jump like Hollow Knight. Now I made it all the way to Grand Mother Silk and I died once. Now it appears there is literally no way to get back up to the boss fight without a double jump or something.

So is double jump completely missable, but also absolutely required this far in, but only if you die once? I've explored a ton and it seems like there's nowhere else I can get to on the map. There's a key to the Slab I never found and one or two areas that seem out of reach without a double jump. Do I really have to backtrack now and annihilate all the momentum after beating Lace? Not to mention lose my rosaries. Just feels like I'm missing something cause otherwise that's really awful and baffling design.

I dunno, I'm still on act 1 lol. 9 hours in because I kept opening other doors and stuff.

It is not, no. The path through The Slab that gets you to the double jump is always unlocked, and the parts of The Slab that require the key (or getting kidnapped) are not required in getting it (ignoring the fact that those parts are, similarly, never inaccessible permanently due to the existence of said key).

No clue about needing double jump for the part you're on, though. I, however, would assume that you're just missing something.

Double jump is 100% not required to make that climb. You seem to have made it the first time, so I'm not sure why the runback seems undoable. Double jump is not required to beat the game in Act 2, since I defeated that boss before getting it.

Also you can retrieve your cocoon with the Silkeater items. Styx in Sinner's Road is an unlimited source of them, so periodically revisit him.

the route I used to get up without double jump involved pogoing on a spike but it's definitely possible

there's some platforms that you lift by attacking them the first time you go up, and they stay lifted after you die so you can't go up in the same way a second time

It's possible without it, just need to pogo and glide well.

As far as I'm aware double jumping is entirely optional. The only things it locks off are similarly optional, IIRC.

I mean I wouldn't say it's optional it's just not needed to get to the end credits.

Like, to put things into perspective, when playing chrono trigger for the first time, literally everything after you reach the end of time is optional but most people won't see it that way.
