Natalie Portman got her first fan letter after this movie. It was a creepy slash flick written by a 40 year old man about her character having sex with him. She was 13 at the time.

No, I don't like the movie.

I watched it often when I was younger, then years later I saw the international version with the extra scenes and its no wonder Besson was forced to cut them. Makes sense when you find out he met his future wife when she was 12 and he was like 30.

Fun fact, the end credits song of GoldenEye was supposed to be for this one but was changed for some reason. Then it ended up in GoldenEye.

I also love the song

I have no idea what the director did.

The script was originally written to have the main characters to be lovers. There was also an unfilmed scene where she forces herself on Leon while he cries.

Luc Besson (the director) was inspired to write it based on the relationship with his wife at the time, who he started dating when she was 15, and had met a few years prior.

Jean Reno knew of his behavior, and had to act as an off-screen guardian to make sure he didnt do anything with Portman.

Ah, definitely creepy. Thankfully the version I saw wasnt like that, and was a good movie if I remember correctly.

I actually just randomly rewatched it on YouTube last week. Even in the standard version it's weird how she tells him she loves him, in a clearly romantic way and he never really acts as though it's inappropriate. He's just like "you don't know what love is, you've never been in love". Didn't know there was some director's cut that's even worse.

Kids can have crushes on adults all the time, I mean I knew several kids in love with their teacher, but then it quickly switched to Maria Carry or someone else.

He was helping her, and protecting her like a father, so her thinking she loved him wasnt that strange. Now if he had acted on it more than surrogate paternal figure love like creepy version that would be bad.

I heard Oldman's performance is often given study in film school or some such, so it's weird seeing people/person call it bad.

As for the movie, I kind of loved it, but I'm leaning towards just cutting it out of my life, much like I do with Roman Polanski films.

Yeah I understand from her perspective for exactly the reasons you said. It was moreso that he didn't shut it down. I did read that at some point he was supposed to be autistic so maybe that's a hold over from that

Well another thing to consider is the guy was a professional hitman, so handling emotions of others wasnt something he usually cared about. Also he was not a father, nor had any experience with kids before, so honestly I am not surprised he didnt know exactly how to handle the situation, but again thankfully he didnt act on them, and just tried his best to explain she was just confused.

Please remember it has been many many years since I have seen the movie so my Memory of how things played out could be totally off. Still to my knowledge he handled it understandably imo for a usually emotionless killer with no experience raising kids.
