I'm NGL guys this kinda feels like those fake video games people are playing on TV shows sometimes. Guys are just popping out of the ground and apparently you level up in this?

I love Metroid games though so I'm tryna stick with it

Like every(?) Castlevania, they're a resource for subweapons.

The music in that game really threw me off. I dunno what I was expecting but it certainly wasn't that. It legit rules though.

your in for a treat tc. this game still holds up imo as a great metroidvania game after all these years. and this is the rpg type so it's not punishingly hard with you just grinding levels to steam roll bosses if you want to
and yes the VA in this is so over the top it loops back in to being GOAT level with fantastic lines like ''what is a man!!!! a pile of little secrets'' so enjoy your ride

I love SOTN; I got it as a kid, and I still go back and revisit it every couple of years.

As others mentioned, hearts are the "ammo" for subweapons. You've no doubt found a few already, as they drop from environment objects (lanterns, candles, occasionally enemies). Picking up a subweapon automatically discards the one you're carrying, but you have a few seconds to pick the discarded one back up if you want to keep it.

The various relics you find all have specific effects. Some allow you to enter water without taking damage (Alucard is a vampire, after all), some make items appear from environment objects, some let you transform into various creatures, and so forth.

TC I'd like to ask you a question. What's more important to this game, the exploration or the RPG elements? Could this game survive without the RPG elements?

The game is good until you get shield rod & alucard shield.

Well there is Richter mode so yes.

it can with richter mode tho shown as a proof of concept. plus it spawned non rpg metroidvania games like hollow knight as it's peak

I don't think the game would be nearly as good as it is if Richter mode was the main mode. It's a great addition to the game but that's all imo.

I honestly prefer Richter mode. It's so much fun to blast through.

I like the RPG elements, but on the whole I feel like they just pad the game out. Richter is all about getting stuff done.

Doubt it. If it's his first time playing, I doubt he knows how to use soul steal. Especially that early on since it has a non-intuitive input in order to cast it.

richter mode is fun for blasting thru the game but i prefer the rpg mode which inspired the metroidvania genre

If you are a REAL SOTN fan, you know what my comment was referring to.

An all-time favorite of mine. Though if you are looking for a challenge you will need to self-impose some rules. There are so many ways to break the game.

Got Soul of Mist and then my first Mist check I get Soul of Bat

Soul of Wolf I don't see the point of in comparison. I was able to get a little further on the right side of the clock tower area by sprint jumping with it, but then later I got double jump and that seems to obsolete wolf perhaps

Yeah, I never saw the point in soul of wolf either. Whatever. Don't like it? Don't use it!

If you're playing this game fresh off of playing Silksong, this game is probably going to be quite easy for you.

This game and Super Metroid are why so many Metroidvanias exist. The genre is just THAT good, so developers of all kinds spend years trying to recreate that magic.

oh yeah i forgot how short the map is now compared to games like HK and you coming off after playing that will breeze thru this in no time

I think it's a genius evolution of linear action platformer games like the original Castlevania.

I love the format, I'm glad that it's had a big revival over the past decade or so.

Wolf does get powered up later with some other relics, but yeah it's mostly overshadowed by Bat and Mist. It is required to get full map completion though
