Its the fornitefication of everything. Since the LOTR and FF sets have been the companys biggest sellers (and what actually keeps papa hasbro green). Nest year only 3/7 products will be in universe and the rest outside IPs

It was fine when it was complementary products, but now that theyre doing it for sets that actually important to the game, it does leave a very bad taste. FF was ok though since it shares many of its roots with DND and thus magic. But seeing spiderman was a bit of a turn off. Not interested in the set at all. Might get a few singles for the art, but even interested in playing them

If Hasbro owns the rights to ExoSquad (I don't know if they do), there's a whole new Equipment cycle, too. Add MASK in there, too, because that definitely is a Hasbro property.

GI Joe makes for great WW fodder, of course.

Visionaries and Jem for more U illusionary cards of some kind. And Inhumanoids is either G giants or some kind of R pumpable monster.

I do not play MTG, however, I do understand the frustration with watching yet another thing just fucking become Fortnite

They're so common and successful that they're now just simply "collabs" and a marketing strategy like any other. I think the reason why they're so overwhelmingly popular with younger people (mostly Zoomers and the oldest of Gen Alpha) is because they don't have a cultural identity of their own outside of consuming media. If most of your life experience is seeing intellectual property, seeing different types of intellectual property crossovers is going to be a bigger deal.

I was talking about the idea of everything needing to be a crossover. Millennials are just as guilty of buying into that shit but it's more tied to nostalgia.

Wait on the site for them to go on sale.
Put what you want in your cart and click check out as fast as you can.
Wait in a vertual queue for a few hours while you wait for the people that were faster than you, as well as the scalper bots to check out.
After 2-4 hours of waiting on their site (don't refresh the page!), if what you want isn't sold out yet, finish buying them.

I'll be honest; I don't mind the silly dumb Secret Lairs from different IPs that aren't mechanically unique cards. These are basically official proxies or alters like people have been doing by hand for years now.

The only issue I have is with how many UB sets there are rather than secret lairs. Not every one of them can fit the theme of Avatar/LotR/Final Fantasy. And even still, the original IP like Lorwyn looked *so* much better and with more thought than these sets.

Yes, it does look like Standard Magic is becoming "Imagine all your favorite fantasy and science fiction characters together, fighting (along with some original ones)." I guess if you don't like it, all you can do is not play.

The MTG crossovers seem to be mostly for the collectors/hoarders. Ignore them and just buy the cards you want?

Was true a few years ago, but now playing limited for specific sets (and cubes purposefully excluding it) is the only way to avoid the crossovers since it's all over every constructed format now, including standard.

I'm sure there are plenty who see stuff like this and cheer it. But it just actively makes me less interested in a thing. Like I looked at the Persona 5 OW2 crossover, and somehow my desire to start playing the game again got even lower (pretty sure it's approaching the core of the earth at this point)

I can understand your opinion on this, however...

1- Casual MTG players can play games however they want. So if someone wants to say no memes/crossovers, then that's how they play.

2- Even before these sets came out, people hated certain cards. There is realistically no way to please everyone.

If you want to be competitive, even at your local FNM, you're kind of forced to, if that set is the meta. Sure, you can try to play outside it, or even a counter-meta deck, but... well, you're not inventing cawblade. You're just going to straight-up lose to anyone playing (and able to afford) the current meta .dec that's on the tables.

Been there, done that, and it's a big part of why I quit.

And don't let anyone tell you that other formats are fun because they're casual. They're not. The people telling you that already spent the money on the best cards even in the casual meta. And, yes, there's even a casual meta. And a commander meta. And a pauper meta. All of which makes it so you're either buying cards you don't want in order to keep up, or not keeping up because you can't buy the cards you might hate in the first place.

Unless you're collecting sets you like and not playing in a competitive game at all... then you have to care about and probably play cards from sets you hate.

At this point, you literally could show me any of these new MtG cards and I would be 50/50 on whether it was a legit new product or something a 14-year-old threw together in a card-creator site.
