How would you react if Final Fantasy 17 were in space, and played like a Mass Effect game?

Sure, I'd play Star Trek Final Fantasy.

It would be like Star Ocean with a budget.

I'd be fine with it. I've always said that each iteration of Final Fantasy should look nothing like the previous version. The only caveat to this is that I don't want it to look like FF14, so not made by the guys who made 16.

I would not be keen on the series turning into a shooter but id be fine with space as a setting.

Not a terrible idea honestly.

Would be pretty cool if the game starts on a relatively typical Final Fantasy world and your party is the crew of a ship being sent out into space for the first time on an exploration mission. Pick up a few aliens along the way.

Not a bad idea as long as it's an RPG still. Taking inspiration from Xenogears/Xenosaga would be pretty good as well.

I don't care if it's set inside a colon as long as the gameplay is actually fun. The problem with modern FF isn't the story or setting.

It's not out of the question given the technological level of the series is all over the place

they've already done the groundwork for it with The After Years and 9 and 16, functionally. And when you get right down to it an airship and a spaceship aren't so different in implementation.

now, will they? Probably not.

I'd argue it is story. 16 wasn't so bad, but 12, 13 and 15 were a mess in the story department. Two of them suffered from shifting leads so its not surprising the story was a mess, and 13 while having a decent background premise, I couldn't tell you who the main villain was in that game as they were barely used from my recollection.

FF12 was fine even tho it felt halfbaked i enjoyed it. tho 15 suffered from needing outside media to understand the lore of the game and what is happening and what is the motivation for the characters plus it had it's proper ending in a novel instead of the game cuz they had to scrap it due to low sales stings

I'd be down with that.
Honestly, my only real wish for 17 is that the protagonist is a girl again. (And a job system.)

That'd be pretty cool, tbh. I like that idea.

Only thing I'd add is that your party would include the people you pick up along the way. Maybe just starting off with yourself, lost in space and the only one left on the spaceship after some incident. You grow the party/crew as you further the story.
