First of all, Dying Light 1 is one of my favorite games of all time. It looks decent, it has a lot of stuff to do without ever feeling annoying (other than a handful of fetch quests), and the melee combat is one of the best I've seen in a first person game.

Usually first person games with emphasis on melee combat are just complete ass because it feels like poking a broomstick on a brick wall over and over again. Skyrim, Far Cry Primal, Zombi, Atomfall, etc etc. Dying Light 1 meanwhile just feels and looks great when you are slashing and smashing zombies.

Anyway never tried DL2, it sounded like a real mixed bag.

Hearing mixed things about Dying Light the Beast, some people say it's a return to the form of the first game, others say it's pretty meh, but I don't know if these naysayers are people who didn't get the charm of the first game.

Also kind of on a side note, I played Dead Island 2 a few months ago and it's pretty great, definitely better than the original Dead Island which was a clunky mess. DI2 is pretty much the closest thing to Dying Light 1 that I've played, though DI2 plays it pretty straight while DL1 emphasizes constant movement a lot more with its parkour and grappling hook.

I just started it today and the movement feels really bad compared to what I remember from DL1. Combat is similar and the beast transformation is a fun addition so far.

Its been 7 years since I played DL1 so maybe I'm misrembering, but in my mind it was always super fluid to navigate across everything regardless of if you're going vertical or horizontal. Basically like what I'd imagine playing assassin's creed in first person would look like. So far in the beast I've spent more time fighting the controls in the forced climbing sections to slowly shimmy across ledges /corners and then take 5 seconds lining up the next jump than actually free running. I really hope its just a skill issue and things start to feel better as I play more.

Maybe its meant to be a thematic change to represent the main character being more of a hulk after the experiments than an agile fighter.

It took quite a while in dl1 to get the grappling hook, and you started out pretty slow and clumsy and gradually got more stamina and moves. But yeah stuff like Parker was always there.

I may one day but all I ever heard about it was that the melee combat was super watered down and lame compared to the first one.
