It's not a bad option to have, but it should be possible to turn it off.

Don't know, don't care, I've had notifications turned off since a few hours after they first introduced them.

I typically track any topic I post in so it'd be pointless in my case.

Do you mean notifications as in this little thing? https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/e/e79361d9.png

Or a browser notification? Because those all suck and I have them disabled.

Considering the quote function is just some html formatting to make the quoted text look different they would have to program an entire system to recognize quotes and notify the associated user. Way too much work for a site that probably doesn't pull a lot of revenue.

It technically already does exactly that.

Like, this quote is explicitly saying that it is quoting the specific post "986617861" that was posted by user "603234". Among other things, it's how the site knows to hide posts from you if you've ignored/blocked a user who is being quoted. It would be incredibly easy for a talented coder to take the framework that already exists and just tweak it slightly to make the site ping the specific user being quoted when the post is sent (in the same way that it already notifies when people post in a topic you created).

That being said, we no longer have talented coders here, so there's no one to implement it, and no real reason to add new features when none of them will attract new users anyway.

...speaking of the metadata in quoted posts though, I usually deliberately and manually delete it every time I quote someone (partly so my posts don't get auto-ignored if I'm multi-quoting someone who someone else has ignored). So even if they did add in features that use the metadata to identify who was being quoted it wouldn't work for my posts anyway.

any feature requested would be too much and it would be a feature many users would want to have the option to turn off despite it being useful. people really want this website to stay stuck in the late 90's.

I never thought about it, but it wouldn't be a terrible option to have. Although how far is it from tracking a topic and checking when it updates? You're already getting a notification, and if the new post quotes you, you'll see it.

The site barely existed in the late 90s. Most of us want it to stay stuck in the early-to-mid 2000s.

Though I'm at least willing to accept if it stays stuck in 2011. It was mostly acceptable at that point, and it was after that where they started making tons of unnecessary and/or negative changes and "features". And it wasn't that long after that where the rise of YouTube video walkthroughs and wikis made this site almost entirely obsolete.

But if we're really honest, the social culture and relevance of the site was at its highest in the late 2000s. It was already starting to decline a bit by 2011, even if most people still here wouldn't necessarily have agreed at the time.

It would get annoying fast, particularly how often I get quoted and the system's potential for abuse.

I wound up turning off notifications after a month both because how often people would spam them to troll me (some dude made 40 or 50 accounts whose names were variations of allegro, using a mix of "l"s and uppercase "i"s on some of them, in that weird harassment) or I'd just randomly get tagged because of my name. That's not counting everybody else who used the feature trying to get my attention. Up until then, I had never realized how many posters wanted my attention.

tbh, I remember that. I was the first, last, and only notification you responded to.
