Since Friday was FMA Day, I took the opportunity to re-watch FMA 2003. I watch reaction videos of Brotherhood often enough that it's all still fresh in my memory, but it's been a while since I've seen the original show, and literally no one ever talks about it online except to shit on it. I'm of the camp that enjoys almost everything related to the franchise, and actually prefers 2003 to Brotherhood, warts and all. --- Official King of PotD You only need one T-Rex to make the point, though. ~ Samus Sedai ... first half of og, second half of brotherhood, halfway point is marked by when you know what happens even though it's not halfway something that i don't think get talked about enough is the fact that they actually did just redo the anime in general, they could have just started from the deviation point woulda loved them to do this with trigun, retaining the same voice actors and just a cleaned up animation style. instead we got whatever the fuck that new trigun series is. there is a CHANCE i would have liked the new trigun if they didn't delete milly and replace her with fucking robert de niro --- https://imgur.com/a/d1RYdRe 04/14/2011 - 07/08/2025; miss you buddy ... While the manga/Brotherhood had a more solidly written narrative, the first anime went in different directions that, while not always executed perfectly, had their own quality and are very much worth seeing for any fan of the franchise. Putting aside the different branching storyline, the characters that are there are done differently (mainly because they simply didn't yet have that characterization at that point in time in the manga). For instance with Ed, rather than And the respective endings address what I feel was a flaw of the basic premise: the series shouldn't have been a shounen in the first place. There are so many dark and disturbing things going on and mature themes, that it was much better being classified as seinen. To the point that while Brotherhood's ending did wrap almost everything up in a neat little bow, it all felt way too optimistic and safe considering everything the characters have been through and what was at stake for all these years. It's kind of like Brotherhood's approach was "you'll have to go through hell, but if you learn the right lessons along the way, you get a happy ending." While 2003's approach was more like "you'll have to go through hell because the world sucks, and you don't always get what you want. But you have to try to do what's right anyway." We all love a happy ending, but one of those is definitely more true to life than the other. --- Official King of PotD You only need one T-Rex to make the point, though. ~ Samus Sedai ... I wound up watching Girls Band Cry since it was a bonus borrow on Hoopla (iirc, maybe 1-2 episodes a night?). The whole time I was thinking, "You know, if this was normally available via a streaming service I have, I probably wouldn't bother watching it." Which isn't to say that I didn't enjoy it by the end, but the first episode or two were rough and the animation style was kinda janky (except for some flashbacks where they had traditional animation). It's also yet another example where I'll watch a show centered around a thing I have zero interest in -- ie, like The League with fantasy football. The only other anime I watched this year iirc might've been Mashle (which I liked, although it got repetitive). I first learned about the series via one of those recap vids and later on decided to watch it. (There was another recap I'd watched -- iirc, something about an undead god being reincarnated in the human world -- that I keep meaning to track down, too. Or maybe that was a manga recap? idk, that was a while ago.) --- (\/)(\/)|-| There are precious few at ease / With moral ambiguities / So we act as though they don't exist. ... Copied to Clipboard!

i do much prefer the movie based off the 2003 anime rather than brotherhoods movie brotherhoods movie was just like, generic action 2003s had nuance. it was set in an alternate version of their world, which was just the real world. but there's not much alchemy in the movie, not for a good bit at least in any major way. so that meant that the bulk of the movie was just character interactions instead of "we cant think of anything good to write so here's some fighting", and given the time frame it was set in it also had this gloomy undertone to it that was different then in general like it literally has the beer hall putsch in it, that's crazy --- https://imgur.com/a/d1RYdRe 04/14/2011 - 07/08/2025; miss you buddy ... Started some more shows of the new season and finally got some pleasant surprises. Assassin exceeds the hero's title was as generic as they come so I wasn't exactly excited for this but like 2 seconds in I had to stop and go "wait a minute, this fight actually looks good". Production values haven't quite reached mushoku tensei levels but they are pretty high. Despite the stories generic premise, the execution is also good so far. They've set up the intrigue quite well. Only sore spot is him trying to go with a no kill rule. The scene in the intro suggests maybe he doesn't stick with this or the intro cut off could be a fake out. Regardless, I don't need him to be bloodthirsty but in dangerous situations sometimes you just gotta kill. A pleasant surprise of slightly lesser quality is "may I ask for one last thing". This looks like a traditional villainess setup starting with the whole prince breaks off engagement to the MC to get with new girl thing but it immediately subverts that by having the main girl go sicko mode and punch out everyone in the room (which is like 50 nobles, the prince, and his new fiance). Turns out she's only ever had violence on the brain and finally has no reason to hold herself back with the engagement thankfully canceled. The other prince (whom she was not engaged to) is also a pretty funny character who treats her like the most interesting wild animal he's ever seen, keeping a wild life observation journal of her and everything and of course provoking her to go wild whenever possible. He's quite funny. The cast has good chemistry and MC's plan is punch first, then keep punching, who needs to ask questions when violence solves all problems. --- I'm ninja (you can't see me) ... The franchise kinda got wonky later on. I really stopped with Gen 7 (since although I picked up Shield, I only played it for like an hour or two)The only precedent for a legends game added 21 new forms and 7 new species of pokemon including some of my favorite. This one adds about that many mega evolution but a mega isn't as good as a whole new pokemon IMO. Also they've been adding new forms and new pokemon in the DLC in both 8th and 9th gen. This is the first new pokemon thing that hasn't added a new pokemon in a while I think. Plotwise it mostly makes sense, being that it takes place entirely in the X/Y city but like, idk, they could of easily put in some reason. We have alpha pokemon back from legends arceus which they lampshade. The new combat is interesting. I was getting my ass kicked by an overleveled alpha. I did like 5% of it's health per hit and it oneshot all but my starter which it 2 shot. Escaped before I ran out of pokemon, healed up, came back, initiated battle with toxic and then recalled my pokemon and ran in circles for 20 seconds or so which completely killed it while I took no damage. There's no reason this strat wouldn't work on a level 100 mega legendary. On the more positive side I am actually having a surprising amount of fun exploring the city (mainly the rooftops). Already found a few of the rare pokemon like eevee and dratini that way. You also eventually get a glide which I don't have but the roll is janky enough to let you cheese some movement sections and get some good stuff that you presumably shouldn't be able to reach until later. There's just something fun about janky movement letting you get places. Reminds me of skyrim or something like that in that regard. --- I'm ninja (you can't see me) ... Copied to Clipboard!

despite the legends games being referenced as "mainline" titles, they genuinely aren't in any execution, it mainly just seems to be testing games, where they test changes to the actual format of the main games. arceus gave us free roam catching, for example, while this game is probably just going to be the battle system going forward. as for like, arceus adding new species, i wouldn't really call them that. kleavor is really just a different form for scyther despite being an evolution --- i am back baby ... I mean, sure, but as far as I'm concerned regional forms are just about as good as a new pokemon. Even if all the new legends pokemon were evolution, they at least get to stay that way, unlike megas. And while kleavor didn't end up being super important, sneasler and ursaluna (and bloodmoon) became some of the strongest gen 9 pokemon in VGC. When I play a new pokemon game, whether it's a spinoff, mainline, or even a fangame, I want to run into something I haven't seen before. That's the most exciting part of a new pokemon game. It's why they didn't just stick to the original 151. The story here, now that I'm a bit further, easily could have had new variants from pokemon exposed to the mega energy that didn't mega evolve and instead took a different normal evolution path, since the entire city is being exposed to it at all times. Getting some more time with the battle system, I have run into an annoyance. When you have a pokemon use a ranged move, they always move to you before doing it. You can use this to make them run out of the way of enemy attacks, but functionally it just adds a lot of "cast time" because they have to spend possibly multiple seconds running to you before they can even start the attack. I guess the counterplay is to always run to the pokemon so that doesn't happen but it's annoying. I wish they would just use them in place. --- I'm ninja (you can't see me) ... Copied to Clipboard!

Kinda getting addicted to fan versions of Pokemon games now. Although some are kinda basic tweaks (ie, Pokemon FR, but with whatever), some are janky, and others are just plain weird (Pokemon Outlaw, which I gave up on right away), there are a bunch that are surprisingly polished or do something crazy. I started Radical Red and looked through the list of differences and jfc, they've done a lot. The only kinda weird thing (but maybe not that weird) is that most of the gba-based ones seem to be built on FR. Before starting Radical Red, I'd kinda wanted to try out a fan version of RSE, but I didn't see anything, so I was just going to play Emerald (and kinda half-considered digging through my stuff for the 2-3 copies of Emerald I own for the actual gba... although I think one is still shrink-wrapped (I'd picked all of them up on clearance at either Circuit City or BBuy, iirc), so I probably wouldn't touch that one, although I'm not sure I'd ever sell it) YoukaiSlayer posted... Also not sure if having an identical profile will cause issues. Zeus posted... The only kinda weird thing (but maybe not that weird) is that most of the gba-based ones seem to be built on FR. Before starting Radical Red, I'd kinda wanted to try out a fan version of RSE, but I didn't see anything, so I was just going to play Emerald (and kinda half-considered digging through my stuff for the 2-3 copies of Emerald I own for the actual gba... although I think one is still shrink-wrapped (I'd picked all of them up on clearance at either Circuit City or BBuy, iirc), so I probably wouldn't touch that one, although I'm not sure I'd ever sell it)I know emerald kaizo and run & bun are emerald based romhacks that are really popular, although generally in the nuzlocke community. I also stand by some of the fan games being the same quality as the official games if not better (although many fan games are worse). Empyrean and rejuvination are the gold standards for me thus far. Insurgence is kinda edgy but also really well balanced and challenging. Also has some sick new megas like mega typhlosion. Empyrean adds 2 new types, light and data and about 30 new pokemon/regional forms as well as the fusion mechanic late game (fusing with the trainer, not fusion like the infinite fusion game). I think the fuse mechanic was kinda cool. Can no longer switch out and if the pokemon faints you black out but it's really strong. They also had the card system which is either horrible or amazing depending on your disposition for grinding but IIRC you can turn it off with a cheat. Story is pretty decent even if it gets a little crazy later on. Rejuvination only adds a handful of new forms and I don't think any brand new pokemon but it has like every mechanic at some point before gen 9 including the snatch machine and shadow pokemon from collesuem. Megas, z moves, dynamax, probably terastalizing when the new update is out. Also pretty well balanced. Story is pretty interesting and well told. I was less impressed by some other games even if they had some upsides, like this little gym of mine where you play as a gym leader or pokemon infinite fusion where you can fuse every pokemon with every other pokemon to make absolutely broken pokemon like slaking+shedinja with wonder guard. Unsurprisingly pretty poorly balanced but still kinda fun. I haven't checked if theres any new good ones in the last several months, wonder if anything has popped up. There's quite a few I tried and dropped in like 20 minutes. Not having a speedup button is an instant skip. --- I'm ninja (you can't see me) ... Copied to Clipboard!

Man, this anime season sucks. I'm barely watching anything and a lot of what I am watching just isn't very good (except kingdom, the GOAT). --- I'm ninja (you can't see me) ... Copied to Clipboard!

I was reminded of the custom robo "I'm not going" alternate ending and just rewatched it and it kinda makes me want to replay the game. Been ages since I beat it. I wonder if it'd hold up. That ending was still one of the funniest things I can think of from a video game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcSRgfpP9ko I wish more games did stuff like this. --- I'm ninja (you can't see me) ... A lot of them have a new game+ vibe. I haven't tried any of the complete reinventions that seem seem great yet, but I'm also mostly stuck on Radical Red since it's a series of rabbit holes. Oh, and unfortunately it seems like the version I got was 2.1, not realizing that a 4.0 exists... but it wouldn't be compatible with the app I'm using to run it, so I'm not sure my saves would carry over and I really don't want to restart this shit (although, if I did, I'd definitely pick the simplified mode where you don't have to worry about IVs/EVs since that both skews the early game and then IV farming is a pain later on). The big reason I learned about the version thing is because the Tyranite or whatever wasn't where it was supposed to be. Was kinda pissed to learn that after getting a larvitar for 100k, having it turn out shiny (without paying the double-fee for it) but with shitty stats so I decided to farm lucky eggs to get 350k to max its IVs (and, in a later version, I learned you can pay 70k to just max one stat which would've been helpful for other shit) all the expectation that I'd demolish Blaine... only to realize the location is inside the Cerulean cave in my version. So that was a waste. I would've just taken a saved state larvitar with relatively great IVs and called it a day otherwise. Oh, then I spent a whole bunch of time hunting for additional corvisquires, powering them up so I'd have 3 for the Erika rematch (where I wasn't able to use one originally because the game has Corvisquire evo at lv60, probably to stop people from just running through Erika with them)... only to discover I could easily win the rematch with just one Corviknight (HP/Def EV spread with Iron Defense buffs and Roost and Leftovers for healing... although I didn't really need to use Roost more than once after a 3x ID buff). Here, I'd readied a team to fight her since I struggled in the initial fight, but that wasn't even a challenge. It's been kinda neat using Corviknight since that was one of the Pokemon that interested me with Gen 8... but I kinda called it quits on SwSh like immediately. I might've been doing other stuff at the time or just been busy. Anyway, Radical Red has been a challenge mostly because it incorporates a bunch of shit that either came out at the tail-end of when I played the main games or mechanics I didn't really pay attention to. When I first encountered terrain, I thought it was just weather and was confused when it didn't vanish when I brought in a sand streamer to remove it. Likewise, I hadn't realized that Grassy Glide (from gen 9?) was a priority move, I thought the grassy terrain was just giving some Pokemon a speed boost via an ability. YoukaiSlayer posted... Likewise, I hadn't realized that Grassy Glide (from gen 9?) was a priority move, I thought the grassy terrain was just giving some Pokemon a speed boost via an ability.Grassy glide is gen 8. In gen 9 they nerfed it heavily from 70 BP to 60 then further to 55 while keeping the +1 priority if grassy terrain is up. All terrains also give a 30% damage boost (down from 50% in gen 7 and earlier) to moves of that type so grassy glide was effectively a 91 BP priority move when grassy terrain was up. Combined with rillaboom having grassy surge and great stats, it was a bit much. I actually did look into some more fangames after I posted that and a ton came out in the last year. Currently playing pokemon vanguard which has been awesome. Has new regional forms for so many pokemon including most of the starters gen 1 through 9 (you can pick any as your starter) and a lot of convenience features like being able to see the route encounters and learnsets and evo conditions and ability to distribute EVs at any time however you want and nature mints for sale for effectively free from the start of the game. Importantly the fakemon and regional forms look really good and match the original pokemon artstyle. I might actually like my poison spriggatito better than the standard one and thats my favorite pokemon (well the whole line) since typhlosion. I wanted to check out awakening but the newest patch that actually completes the game broke the english translation. Low key I'm happy pokemon stopped making sprite based games to give modders and fan creators more incentive to make these things. I wonder if the official games will ever add common features like level caps and monotype or nuzlocke rulesets. --- I'm ninja (you can't see me) ... Copied to Clipboard!

So after finishing season 2 of Dan Da Dan, I went and read some of the manga. I only went as far as where I'm guessing the third season will end, and feel mostly content there as a stopping point since the few remaining plot threads could be left to the audience's imagination, but it teases a cliffhanger regarding --- http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb179/EntityXIII/entityfn7.jpg ...
