Hey its that song at the end of the Halo soundtrack! This is a really soft but impactful and emotional piece. Lots of piano and those trademark oohs. I dont really have a lot to say about it its short but highly effective, though I admittedly dont know how much Id remember it if it wasnt at the end of the Halo theme!

This started out really cool! I like the sci-fi/glitchy type noises. Its staying around a 6.5 though; the rest of it didnt quite keep that exciting hook that the beginning had. That said, I really like the atmosphere and general vibe. It feels like a unique take on all these factory-adjacent songs; its got that 90s sensibility and production quality. Cool song, even if it wasnt quite a keeper.

Shadow Hearts - S.S.C.~ Special Shortcuts

This feels trippy, like something is going wrong. I think that's the intention, there are some noises here that I don't like but they are super present. Normally I would be bothered by this level of dissonance but it doesn't seem to stick out in a way that's bothersome. The glitching and overall vibe isn't my thing but it's a unique song.

Pokmon Sword/Shield - Gym Leader Battle (Full In-Game Version)

Oh no, my least favorite Pokemon song. I will try my best be respectful on this one. I just really don't care for the melodies here and they just don't do much for me. I heard this song works way better in context which I don't doubt. The song fits the setting well enough and it is unique for a Gym Battle theme in the series. My main issue with it is that it doesn't go to many places in it's long run time so it ends up not doing anything for me. I would greatly prefer if it was shorter and got to the point quicker instead of lingering on sections. I actually do not mind this theme when it's shortened, the best example is with the arrangements from the anime which I will link. The other thing I really don't like here is the chanting, I just find it annoying personally due to the chants being off key. "That's what chants sound like in real life though!" I don't like them there either lol. The chants are on key in the anime version which is another reason why I prefer it. I also feel like the song is lacking the intensity of a Gym Battle theme this is also remedied in the anime arrangement of the song. This song just isn't for me and I don't like any of it, please don't take offense to this Bitto. It's just really not for me.

Myth: The Fallen Lords - The Siege of Madrigal

A pleasant and moody piano, nice. I love the chords used for this song are absolutely lovely. I really like this track, it's short and sweet but such a pleasant listen.

The Vortex: Quantum Gate II - Veil Nebula

This gives me some ringtone vibes with the intro, but it seems to build itself up nicely. The tribal elements are very fitting, this feels like a song that would play for an obscure game from my childhood. The vibe is pretty cool, I can get down with it. Interesting song, I like it.

You know, Igenuinely dont think Ive ever heard this before. And Ive been missing out! Uematsu rocking out with his Playstation organ over here. The Final Battle starts with an extended intro that gives way to something grander in scope, a real opus of a final battle theme. Its great to be swept along there are even people moaning in pain at one point but the thing is, the actual song just isnt as memorable as, say, The Extreme (which I have as a 7). Its still a good time and I imagine it hits harder in game, but I prefer Messenger of Destruction to this (its a 7.5).

Okay, I know I said I liked child vocals, but this ones testing my limits. Its almost a little too cute? Its the same problem I have with the childs version of DREAMS DREAMS from Nights Into Dreams, which Ive never even been able to listen through all the way. Beyond the Sky is almost too much cutesinesswhich is weird, because its not a happy song! Its kind of sad actually, if you listen to the lyrics. For example:

I always think of you and I'll try to cross the emerald ocean
As long as the stars are guiding me
I don't know how much time I need
It's a miracle that we could find each other in this world

You could interpret this as somebody looking for someone, naturallyor, as is suggested in the comments, as a dog! Which fits in with the game, which is apparently about dogs. So in that sense, the song is a success. Im not really into the vocals but I do think the overall message is strong; that averages out to a 6.5, I guess? Tough one to rate.

Sad Yack is sad Ive never heard a slower song from this series before. Everything Im familiar with is high energy. And true to form, this picks up around 1:40, with an accordion no less. At 2:40 it goes back to the soft, contemplative side and stays there for the rest of the song. There are dissonant bells at the end, maybe suggesting an uneasy peace? I like this song. I dont think its especially memorable to me like I probably wont remember it in a few minutes but I enjoyed listening to it twice and got something solid out of it each time, and thats enough for a 7.

An industrial song, in both a genre sense and a literal sense theres a lot of whirring and drilling going on here. With live instruments I could hear this on some metal/industrial album (I am not great at genres but hopefully you get what I mean). There isnt much melody here, its almost entirely factory vibes, which is fine by me, though I was kind of hoping for more variation throughout the runtime. Still, the industrial noises go a long way!

Final Fantasy IX - The Final Battle

It's been way too long since I last heard this, I don't remember it. This sounds like classic FF, the screams and noises in the background give the song a bit of an edge with how unsettling it is. The melody unfortunately isn't doing anything for me. I do like the bit at 3:00, it sounds pretty cool. This song is alright but it doesn't do a whole lot for me.

The DOG Island - Beyond the Sky (English)

This is cute and the melodies are nice but the I prefer when kids sing softer and not with their full chest like this. I can't dislike this though, it's like watching one of my nieces sing in a play. It's not "technically good" but I don't care because it's pure. Yeah this is heartwarming I can't dislike it.

Senko no Ronde - Feldherrn

That triangle is a bit too sharp with how it's produced here, it needs to be softened a little bit. This sounds nice enough so far. Nothing is really coming to mind while listening here, so this won't be a long comment on this one. I don't mind this song.

Kula World - Mars

That's a cool percussion, I like how the bass melds with the song. It has a bit of a groove, it kind of reminds me of the game Mushroom Men with this musical style. I really like how this is adding instruments as it goes, it makes it so the song doesn't become repetitive. Good song, I liked it.

personally would've classified Feldherrn as being from Senko no Ronde Rev. X, aka. WarTech (while i think that it probably did also get added to the arcade version, that would've been in the "Senko no Ronde SP" overhaul, which came out after rev.x anyway. and i'm still not even sure if it did tbh) (the reason being that it's an ending theme from the overhauled story mode in rev.x. it is said that sp added in all the updates from rev.x but idk if that included the story)

edit: had a look at some gameplay of sp and the story mode (which is also the score attack mode) was unchanged from the original release, and every character only has Confetti (song on the original senko no ronde soundtrack) for their ending themes. so yeah it's strictly a rev.x song

Pretty straightforward and short rocker. I dont think this song really does anything super exceptional, but its fun and a little goofy, rather charming. It reminds me of a PS1 platformer with its aggressive digital guitars. Real vibes on this one not much to say, it squeaks into the back end of the 7s from being so disarmingly charming that I cant help but like it.

Love that thunder clapping that keeps the tempo. This would be higher even if its only for that but nothing really happens in the second half? It feels like the song needed to stop thirty seconds prior to the ending. That said, the first half is cool enough that I can overlook it. In addition to the clapping, I also enjoy the way the backing synths swell. Neat song!

Alien Breed - Main Theme

I love long vgm. As I say in at least one other writeup (Im doing these out of order so bear with me if the timings a little wonky!), longo songos are a great way for me to get invested. The Main Theme to this Amiga game certainly goes through multiple phases. It starts out slow and ominous, then picks up speed, then segues into something mournful, then turns into a funky tuneit keeps changing, staying with one movement for anywhere from 1.5 to 3 minutes. It has no shortage of musical ideas across its 16:38 runtime.

It's very impressive to hear a song like this from 1991. The Commodore 64 and Amiga werent as well-known in the US, so many American gamers are unfamiliar with this complex and captivating music. Like I have nothing against the Super Mario Bros. theme, but in 1985 Rob Hubbard composed the theme to Monty on the Run for the C64, which blows Mario out of the water. But Mario is from the more popular game, so thats the song everyone knows. The same is true for some of these Amiga classics. In 1991 the Super Nintendo was launching worldwide with classic soundtracks like F-Zero and Pilotwings, but meanwhile composers like Chris Hulsbeck and Allister Brimble were coming out with these epics that were just as compelling but that your average person doesnt know.

I made a project on Rate Your Music called Sound Test, which offers 1000 vgm in an essential list. (Now its actually more than 1000!) I tried, with help from some folks, to really stretch the scope of what vgm had to offer. Thus, the Amiga stands proudly alongside its contemporaries. (Brimble is represented by Spellbound Dizzy for the ZX Spectrum and Project-X for the Amiga.) Shameless plug: if you want to view the list, you can check it out here:

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/pl4/sound-test-1000-essential-video-game-songs-from-pac-man-to-pizza-tower/

Anyway, back to Alien Breed. This is a cool song but as much as I love long vgm, it doesnt really hold my interest all the way through. Its more one of those songs I respect more than enjoy. Its still reasonably high on the list 7/10 is certainly above average but I dont think its a keeper for me. Though I like parts of it a lot, particularly the last 30 seconds.

Lots of weird timesig stuff! I dont adore this song but it does some things I really appreciate. I like the overall feel of things; the song sounds busy but not cluttered. I like some of this. I like the shoegaze style thats also present in other SubaHibi songs. I especially like the chorus, when it shifts into a minor key (maybe?) and becomes extra emotive.

but man, I cannot get behind this singer. She sounds like she struggles to hit some of the high notes sometimes? Its kind of painful to listen to. I can be very picky about vocals, sadly. But I actually think Id like this even less as an instrumental its these specific vocals that spoil it for me, not vocals overall.

That said, the rest of it is pretty enjoyable. After two listens I dont even mind the singer all that much, really. Its a decent song with a wistful vibe that I suspect will linger with me for a while.

You mentioned that you think you'd like it less as an instrumental, but I did wonder if you'd end up liking this version more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQWreeNCFLY. Don't know how you feel about music box versions of songs, but maybe you'd enjoy it!

This long song is way better than the long song I nominated! (And its subject also happens to be something alien and evil, hmm.) Change is a good way for a long song to stay interesting, but too much change can make it feel messy, and this song threads that needle quite well. It stays with each musical style just long enough to fully explore it, then moves onto something new. Though, my favorite thing about it isnt any particular style, its the synths that first appear at 4:13 that sound like someone going uh. Theyre so silly, which makes it all the more impressive that the 8-11 minute range successfully uses them to sound scary.

This song represents the part in the story when they actually initiate the procedure which leads to Mari falling into a coma (the main driving point of the game), whereas the previous 3 songs are mostly backstory. So this analogy actually works for the song as a whole.

Ooh, I really like the cool-sounding drums. Theyre probably the big selling point for me, especially with how prominent they are. I do love a good percussion-based song. I dont know what that prominent sound effect throughout is. It sounds sort of like a slot machine or a gun cocking (and really whats the difference between those two things). That sound is enough to keep my interest, at least in the first half; otherwise the song feels pretty plain to me. Songs in this moody style often have to work extra hard to impress me. The second half adds some country flair, which is neat. If anything the slot-gun sound becomes distracting when the song fills up with more instruments. Maybe the mixing is weird on headphones? I guess I like the extra sound more when the song is sparser, so maybe thats a sign that Id prefer if it wasnt there in the second half. I dont know. This song is one of many in the ranking thats improved by a second listen; I got much more into it the second time around, everything came together better for me (though I still stand by my comment about the mixing being a little weird).

Trying my best not to get lapped...

Wario Factory - Soundscape's alright (especially that laugh), but the melody is a bit too basic for what I want.

Lucky Break - Very cool song. The sax is a fun instrument but it doesn't completely dominate the song and the song has a really nice story in its melody that makes it feel complete.

ARKANOID Step - Cool, heavy instrumentation off-set by the softer chiptunes.

Peacock Purgatory - Acceptable spooky music. The flourish at the end is nice.

Sou [Japanese] 4-03 - That's a pretty fascinating idea for a nomiantion - do different variations of a core main theme. Agreed that the jazz fusion is cool, but feels a bit undercooked. The instrumentation and production seems fine; I just don't think the melody is a good fit.

Unending Uncanny - I like the frantic energy of the song while still feeling generally upbeat. The breaks in the middle are also very nice.

Remembrances - A very pretty song but that's it.

Decisive Battle II - It's mostly serviceable boss music, but the last minute or so is the only part I found compelling. I played Octopath 2 and the Decisive Battle II version there incorporates the specific character's leitmotif of the boss they're fighting, which REALLY adds to the song. It looks like Octopath 1 does the same thing, which is cool - though, I still like Octopath 2's melody more.

Sad Sun - I definitely am a normie in the VGM world and found myself struggling what songs to nominate, as most of my favorites are already on there. Sad Sun isn't really a song I love, but I do like the Western style of it and thought it was an interesting song for such a tiny part of the game. The melody is not really served by its N64 sound and I think this song could really be better served if synced to the cutscene - it's a bit meandering otherwiser. But a cool concept of a song for sure.

Sunbeams through the Leaves - It's funny; I don't think this sounds like Kirby music at all. It's a fine melody, but doesn't do much for me.

Final Battle with Saurin - While I do have a higher opinion of final boss music, I do find that this slips to the background far more than I'd like. That background guitar/drums is just a bit too standard.

Grass Land 4 - I'm sure I never heard this song before, but it totally feels like I did. Just a really strong melody with the right sort of instrumentation that feels like an instant classic.

Opening - It's alright; I like the backing track way more than the primary one.

Enjoy Your Stay - Short, yes. But likable and memorable.

Aeon - Ticking clocks, my weakness. Really like how the added melody in adds a weight and gravitas while not wallowing in melancholy.

Track 6 - Cool instrumentation, but that's it.

Main Theme - God, what a cool soundscape. It feels dated but purely on a melodical sense, not in an instrumental sense. I love how it captures both an atmospheric vibe and a catchy melody in the same breadth.

Challenge - Cool song; I love how varied it is and manages to sound fairly unique in all of its different parts.

Virtue's Last Reward ~Orhcestra~ - I like the VLR main theme a bit, but I'm not as hot on the second half. I don't think it adds much to the main theme.

Battle Theme 1 - I'm unfamiliar with Unlimited SaGa. I know this melody and like it quite a lot, but if there's a lot of variations of this theme, I'm not sure which one is the best for me. The strings are quite nice, but I don't like the background instrumentation that much.

This is jazz, alright. Specifically its the kind of jazz I struggle with: freeform and proggy. There isnt much for me to grab hold of with songs like this not to say theyre boring or bad, but I think with jazz I need something more melodic or, the opposite, weirder. This is in the middle and thus doesnt leave much of an impression on me. That piano is cool though.

A second listen, however, does this song wonders. Maybe Im enjoying it more now that I know whats coming? Either way, Im way more into it now. This is why everything gets at least two listens!

Whoatrippy This is two (maybe three?) acoustic guitars strumming along, one normal, one distorted. It feels like Im underwater listening to this, maybe even upside down at the same time. Its a chill song though, something that would probably play really nicely in the background at a restaurant, or a casual party. I like dreamy songs like this. Tonka Space Station - Housing Module

I played one of these Tonka games as a kid but not this one. I had no idea they do something crazy like space. I always associate them with trucks or construction equipment. This sounds intense for a game like this, the bass is pretty interesting to listen to and there are some cool chords. I wish this was a bit longer but it's not bad and has a space feeling to it so it seems successful. I don't mind this song.

Dungeons of Hinterberg - Magical Monster

This has a slight vaporwave feel to it, I feel like it's building towards something but really subtly. I really enjoy some of the chords here, I think the ending more lowkey part is my favorite here. This is overall just a nice vibey song, I don't mind it.

Alien Breed - Main Theme

16 minutes is... ambitious. I don't think I'll enjoy the length but we'll see. The bass sounds great, the build up to the next part of the song was well done. The next part sounds like a different song which means this song falls into the trap a lot of long songs do for me which is that they have a bunch of wildly different sections that makes me question why these weren't all different songs. I like some of the melodic components of the second part. I don't have much else to say, in general I'm not a fan of long songs and this isn't exception. There are elements I like for sure but the length is a bit exhausting for me.

Amplitude (PS4) - Recession

Right out of the gate and this goes for a specific vibe that's really not my thing. I don't mind a little bit of dissonance here and there in songs but there's a lot here and it's just too much for me. It's also very chaotic which also isn't really my thing. There are guitar bits I enjoy, the vocals aren't doing much for me here. This is really not my thing, sorry.

Mortal Kombat: Deception - Onaga's Theme (The Dragon Has Left the Building)

I feel like I've heard a song very similar to this, at least the intro with the choir and percussion. I have a bit of beef with sitar but I'll try and let it slide here. I think the percussion is the highlight here. I don't have any strong feelings on this one.

Death Stranding - I'll Keep Coming

That is a neat little sample at the start, not sure what it is. This feels ominous but also a bit sad, I don't like the bass harmony here because it sounds like it's just the singer pitched down. I would have greatly preferred if they got an actual bass singer, I think the pitched down voices is what makes the harmony sound odd to me. There's an effect that shows up, like a low pitched static and I don't really like it. It kind of hurts my ears which isn't good because I have a bit of a headache this evening. I didn't expect the direction with the banjo, it changes the vibe a decent amount. This isn't my cup of tea.

Sou, Atas***achi wa Konna ni mo Rifujin na Sekai ni Ikiteiru no dara yo - Unused song 2: Bakudan tansaku-you jazz fuu / Jazz style for bomb search (2)

Yeah this is very much Jazz, I kind of have mixed feelings on a lot of Jazz. I like the instruments but a lot of Jazz is a bit too aimless for my taste, it's usually just a few fellas noodling around so I prefer less improv and more standard vibes. This kind of has both so I'm not completely sure how to feel. This is alright but it's not doing a whole lot for me unfortunately.

Hylics - Ruins

This makes me think of the band Brand New a tad bit, mostly just with the guitar tone. Surprisingly I don't dislike the dissonance here, maybe because it's not so in my face? Idk, I do wish this had a stronger melody or something to really catch the attention of my ears. It's mostly just an odd vibe which is fine but not something I gravitate towards. No strong feelings on this one.

What a fun application of the CrazyBus theme! I enjoy the CrazyBus theme a lot (its a 7) and its neat to see this tongue-in-check arrangement, which is the beginning played over top of what sounds like a concert at a high school auditorium. Big sound check vibes. It makes CrazyBus sound almost normal, which maybe you find that unappealing, but I love creative ways to reinterpret something like that.

This is a final boss theme alright! Its very tense. Lots of big sounds. Big drums and big synths and a big choir sample. I like how chaotic it is; it keeps moving at breakneck speed. Its not a song I can see myself really returning to much its maybe a little too intense, if that makes sense? but one thing I really love is the drums. Theyre probably the biggest highlight for me. I also like the part around 1:05 where the song gets more subdued; I tend to like when intense/high-energy have little breaks like that, it makes the rest of it feel more impactful.

I really like this soundtrack! Its got such intensity to it while still generally being catchy enough to hum. This isnt my absolute favorite from the game, but I was still able to recall it before clicking on the link, which says a lot! The big moneymaker here is the ehhhh-WOH" synth effect all throughout, but I also really like the section at the end of the loop for a nice spin on the flavor. Cool pick!

This starts off awesomebut then it doesnt quite reach those same heights for me. Its still a great song I love the overall production, grandiose and forlorn, and the specific instruments are really delightful. The vocals add a lot to the experience too. You took a risk nominating such a violin-heavy song, but I like those too! Really, theres a lot to like, even if it still doesnt measure up to the intro.

Crazy Sonic - CrazyBus Remix (Another Version)

Ooh, a remix of Crazy Bus. It probably won't beat my favorite remix though, I might as well link it below lol. This sounds almost fever dream ish but also kind of unsettling. I don't think this is for me but it is a good remix of the theme.
This is my favorite cover/remix of the Crazy Bus theme.

Madou Monogatari: Fia and the Wondrous Academy - Final Boss

I'm always down for some Puyo Puyo music but this was extremely unexpected, I did not expect Resident Evil lol. The percussion isn't my favorite, the atmosphere here is really cool and it feels intimidating and scary. Quite cool even though it's not my cup of tea.

F-Zero GX - Osc-Sync Carnival (Lightning, incl. final lap)

It's been awhile since I last listened to this song. Can't remember how it sounds off the top of my head. Very standard electronic music, it reminds me of early 2000s "techy" cartoons that would have songs like this. I do like how it's not completely static the whole way through and has a few bass movements. I do like some of the higher synth progressions that hop in every once and awhile. It doesn't really do anything for me just because I don't have any strong feelings towards these types of songs.

Cytus II - The End Years

This has some really interesting twists and turns, I don't expect what comes next. It has Electronic, Rock and Orchestral elements which the composer blends really well. I'm kind of surprised but I can kind of vibe with this even though it is a bit chaotic. 1:15 - 1:40 is probably my favorite part, the piano but near the end is very pleasant. I like this song, it was a fun listen.

I really like the sounds in this one. The song opens with a tinkly/crystally beat and then transitions into something a bit more synth guitar. The moments when it goes back to the crystally bits are my favorites, probably because they sound a bit like chiptune. Theres also a mysterious feeling as the notes swirl around, taking their time to fade in and out. As with the other versions, this sounds totally distinct its pretty impressive that Mizuno was able to make such unique variants on the same basic song.

Spooky horror game ambience. Kind of minimalist most of the time except for some strings that pipe in near the end of the loop. I imagine tiptoeing around somewhere dark to this music, afraid of what comes next. I dont know much Resident Evil music, but if you told me this was from a Metroid game, Id have no reason to disbelieve you. Its got a nice alien quality to it, reminiscent of what Ive heard from, say, Metroid Dread. Its also very evocative of coldness, like it plays in some sort of secluded ice area or something. Pretty effective.

I can take or leave music box arrangements. This one's pleasant enough. The melody transitions nicely into this format, especially around the 1:00 mark. I actually think this might place even higher than the original - not sure!

Not A Dance of Fire and Ice, thats different.

A lovely little water theme (if you couldnt tell from the title). Like many, many water themes in vgm, its evocative of the calm yet turbulent state of being in the water. This song is a bit more haunting than most water themes; theres a feeling of isolation in the chippy notes. I really appreciate its commitment to this spooky aesthetic; I can picture exploring deeper into the water, watching the light from the sun slowly dim.

This was my original writeup:

So this song does some cool things. I like the factory noises, which is standard for me. I like the weird time signature. I like the general melody and presentation.

buuuuuuut. This would be significantly higher if it werent for the quality of the audio. This isnt a link problem I checked two other links, the song just sounds like this. The mastering is totally off. I dont really know how to describe it other than to say that this song sounds like what things sound after Ive been listening to something really loud: tinny, muffled, but out of alignment with things all over the place aurally. Its a mess. Borderline unlistenable. This might be a me problem maybe its a song I cant use headphones for? but yeah this is too much of a (literal) headache for me. Im sorry Im sure thats not satisfying for you but I have to be honest.

This is my writeup after listening on speakers:

Speaker audio quality sucks, but it makes this song sounds so much better. I thought this was cool enough to try on speakers, so Im breaking my headphones-only habit for this. Originally this was a literal 2!

So yeah. +1 for speakers I guess!

Yes, and don't forget bone conduction or osmosis via subsonic frequencies.

4 lists, so listen to each song 4 times. 16 times per song sounds doable if you just stagger it.

(But seriously invest in some high end headphones if you enjoy making these huge lists).

I included this theme purely for nostalgia, as nothing else transports me back to my childhood quite like it.

Ive always found it hauntingly beautiful, especially considering it comes from a cutesy platformer from the early 90s. A true testament to what the Amigas sound hardware was capable of!

An ambient track that starts out kind of spooky, then gets kind of sad, then gets a little energetic I like the factory-esque bursts of percussion before we segue into something with a more definable pattern. The bass is strong throughout, and there are lots of audio goodies: deep horn noises, pistons, even some strings near the end. This is a song presumably best listened to with headphones [edit: or earbuds apparently???], to extract all the little surprises. I enjoyed listening to this its not a song that I think will stick with me, but rather its a song Ill probably come upon a year or two from now and enjoy reacquainting myself with.

This is mostly a piano/guitar, somewhat acoustic song until around 1:15, when this wicked percussion comes in. I dont know what type of drumming that is it sounds like using a natural object instead of an instrument but I really love it. Im assuming thats why you picked this song (its the obvious highlight for me), but I do like the rest too. Its a moody song, befitting a piece called Sunset Frontier, and the guitar and piano play off each other nicely.

welp, ton to catch up on after being away for a chunk.

I'll Keep Coming is gorgeous. I love how it keeps layering more things on, keeps surprising me. Especially that high siren-esque thing around 3:30? I don't know if it's something I'll keeping coming back to, but I really enjoyed it.

Crazy Sonic is such a trip. I love how the "normal" music binds it, causes your brain to make sense of the chaos. It's such a cool effect.

I have no idea what to make of Fia's final boss, but I want to listen to it again, so :)

OMG the end years is incredible~! It reminds me a little of Unknown Polution, with the huge dynamic contrast while also having a lot of forward-pointing energy, if Raiden V were world music.
