Was it textbook in the 90s though? To the point where Japanese television regulators would know about it? A lot of safety stuff thats common knowledge now is common knowledge because of incidents like this.

Anyway, I had always heard that, as a result of this, none of the Porygon line ever got episodes centered on them again, even as a second and third evolution were released. Anyone know if this is true?

IIRC it's mostly real and about the topics they were about, but people framed it in a "GF does weird kinky shit" when it's just typical folklore stuff

What I don't understand is why they haven't just edited out the seizure-inducing bits for repeats and international broadcasts. From what the Wikipedia says, the offendng parts only lasted a few seconds at most, and it seems like they could easily be replaced with something different and safe, maybe even cut altogether. I get that they wouldn't have wanted to show any version of the episode any time soon after the original broadcast, but it's been 28 years now.

Not really since somebody had to be the fall guy and it sure as hell wasnt going to be pikachu obviously.

There were actually several episodes that were outright canceled in Japan and never saw the light of day. Often involving earthquakes around the time a serious earthquake happened. In fact the move Earthquake is pretty much banned from the anime. It hasn't been seen since gen 3.

Heck, a story arc they were building up to with Team Rocket fighting Team Plasma was even canceled, making the already abysmal BW series even worse.
