I'm also a Canadian, and I remember learning about Jim Crow laws in school. We obviously focus on Canadian history to a much greater degree than American history, but our countries' histories are intertwined enough that there is definitely some American history that we learn as well.

I'm not doubting the Canadian school system, by now it probably does a better job with US history than more than a few US schools.

I had this conversation with a more centrist conservative friend before the world got so fucked. He ... was pretty disgusted by the idea. It was a pretty non-negotiable "that's just another form of oppression" to his mind with his logic being that if you have to vote than it follows that you will eventually be forced to vote for someone you don't agree with.

I don't agree with him, but the "right to not vote" is something a lot of Americans take very seriously. Compulsory voting will probably never happen here.

I'm not going to bother explaining statistics on here for what would have to be over a dozen times at this point, so not addressing this.

It's not majority MAGA, it's majority would pick MAGA if forced to choose because they are a combination of uninformed, apathetic, and bigoted (primarily against immigrants and trans people). The media environment, especially the online one, is such that MAGA seemed like a better choice to most people in the US (or at least a plurality, since Trump still doesn't reach 50% due to third party voters).

Well actually, its not that the majority is MAGA. The fanatic, flag-waving, hat-wearing idiots are a minority. But the majority would vote for Trump if pressed to make a choice. For no other reason than theyre completely uninformed about politics, and theyve heard some bad stuff about Democrats on social media, so they must be the bad guys.

We have got to stop living in denial about the average American. Your family, neighbors, co-workers the majority of them are fine with Trump. They dont care. Trump is not some plague that descended on our perfect society and messed it up. Trump is a symptom.

There have always been crazy stupid people. The problem is that our society is willing to elect the crazy stupid person, and our government wont do anything to stop the crazy stupid person. Our country as a whole is to blame for allowing him to have power.

voting on vibes is the current trend for the uninformed. Looking up information to be educated is not something the average voter does. Being lied to seems to have no effect on voting.

I genuinely believe that in order to vote you should be forced to take a basic competency test, and that goes for my country (Canada) as well. It doesn't need to be difficult, but you should have the best interest of your specific country in mind. Also, when it comes to voting, every candidates past choices should be laid out for all to see and judge. There should be no mysteries, you should have a clear idea of what each candidate brings to the table.

Never going to happen, but one can dream.

I see the logic behind this, but its so ridiculously open to abuse that its not workable in the real world. Remind yourself that something as basic as testing that voters are literate has successfully been used in the past to deny voting rights to the wrong people.

Yeah, I understand why it wouldn't work. I just wish in a perfect world it would work. Because my god do all of us vote in some really stupid people. Ancient Greek authors like Xenophon, Plato, Aristotle, etc (all rich men who were part of the leisure class and relied on enslaved labor to make their money) saw the common man voting and having political power as a bad thing, often citing things like the execution of Socrates or the Sicilian Expedition. In Ancient Athens every male citizen held political power, and while they didn't elect their officials via voting (since they saw it as an oligarchic institution), the citizen body voted on pretty much everything.

It's that disdain that made democracy a dirty word until very recently. The Founding Fathers of the United States saw democracy as a dangerous form of mob rule.

Asmongold had a real mask off moment this year, since then he's been streaming a lot of propaganda stuff that doesn't involve him & showing his ignorance.
Back when he didn't talk about politics (& other countries), when he was more gaming focused, I'd agree with some of his points.
It's weird because he said he was going to change his behaviour after his father said he'd become an asshole & it actually made him want to be better (briefly), but it's like he got worse (even before his father passed).

I would argue the modern liberal democracies have gone far the other way in making democracy out to be a noble, almost holy word. To the point where whenever people vote for something that is "bad" we try to look for things to blame other than the voters, because that might imply democracy has flaws (not that this means other systems are better). So we get stuff like people claiming the problem was not enough people voting even though the evidence shows more people voting means Trump wins by a larger margin. I think we should view democracy as a tool, neither noble nor dirty (elements of both actually), that gives us superior outcomes most of the time for most people compared to authoritarian systems. But that doesn't mean there's anything noble or virtuous about voting or "the will of the people". Voters can and will vote for things we view as morally abhorrent (no shortage of historical examples that are now widely considered to be morally wrong).

The fail state of democracy is democratically voting to abdicate power back to the state. It's not a perfect system but when it fails, the result is almost always worse.

There's other things on paper that sound nice like managed democracy but realistically such systems would become corrupt beyond all repair within days of being implemented.

The solution to stupid people voting for stupid things is to make it so that there's less stupid people.

Nor is "education", that's always been a nonsense claim that if people were just more educated things would work how we want (we are the most educated we have ever been in history, there isn't a way to make people more "informed", refer back to the Public Opinion book).
