I think it's because the first cat I had was a grumpy ass orange alpha cat. Really big, acted like he owned you, liked to sit in your lap but HE decided when he was done. He bit me one time out of nowhere because he didn't want to be pet anymore. That cat also did weird stuff like walk out the door if we propped it open taking in the groceries, but he would sit there in the bush and growl at us if we tried to take him back in.
