I used it for years (Slackware). Went back to Windows because driver support for my particular AMD GPU at the time was abysmal, when AMD stopped updating the old proprietary driver. I want to switch back, but I'm a procrastinator.

2.0 is. 3.0 (Steam Deck) is not and that's the one using proton.

BUT it's Linux so there's options. There's one distro that is basically a fork of the existing 2.0 to run proton and another one that reverse engineered the 3.0 OS to get it to install elsewhere. I am not sure how active development on those OS are but both of them have their own unique drawbacks and neither of them can truly replace the Steam deck OS.

I guess I'll need to play with a Steam deck one of these days.

I just use Proton built into the client on Mint and for the most part it "just works".

I think the difficulty is a tad overstated.
This is part of the problem. For a decade users have insisted that linux isn't difficult and ready for the masses. Yet, every year it somehow gets more ready for the masses, while still being a pain. Either they were lying in the past or are lying now.

Linux is user-friendly, it's just picky about who its friends are.

An old quote. If you need Linux to just automagically do everything and "just work" for you, then use Windows. If you don't want to even learn the first thing about how the OS works under the hood and how to diagnose problems then why use Linux? A lot of people will switch to Linux and the first time something doesn't work right they go back to Windows hating Linux.

I think you might have a point. It doesn't help that Linux is incredibly segmented and for every person pushing Mint or Ubuntu you have others pushing Arch or Gentoo. This creates confusion because something like Ubuntu is pushing extreme user friendliness, Mint is basically "good windows", and Gentoo is ... effectively just building your own OS. "Linux is easy" really isn't fair when taken to its full context.

But I will say in all sincerity that I've used multiple flavors of Linux that I find more user friendly than Windows or even OSX.

See that's exactly what I need. The automagic thing.

But if Windows is going to be a bastard about it, I'll just buy a Mac. Or are they going to be bastards too?

I would say give Mint a shot, and if you hate it ... well at least it was free. I would say do a virtual box install first, then play with a live CD (actually USB these days, but yn).

Yeah this.

Not only would i be surprised, if every program i use is compatible with Linux (mostly games and game adjacent stuff), but i also havent had any bad experiences with windows so far (knocks on wood), and W11 just feels like W10 to me. Going from 7 to 10 was more noticeable for sure.

No. I honestly don't have issues with W11, so I don't see a need to switch. In addition, tons of software I use doesn't natively work on Linux. I'm sure it's possible to get a lot of it to work, but that's a lot of effort to do what I'm already doing today.

Yes. I installed Mint on my Thinkpad. It has taken a lot of work to get it running decently. First the fingerprint sensor doesn't work. The speakers aounded terrible until I set up an audio filter that attempts to replicate the Windows audio driver.

I still need to work out why it doesn't turn the laptop off after shutting down.
It also seems slower than when it was running Windows 10.

Im kind of disappointed, but I will give it more time

You're probably sol on the fingerprint scanner. There might be software in the repo though.

The speed is probably an issue with whatever graphics driver your using. The proprietary ones are usually faster, theres a nice graphics driver utility that can make this easier.

As for the shutdown thing, you might just be clicking the wrong button.

Apple is even worse than Microsoft in this regard. The GNU Operating System (used on nearly every single implementation on Linux) was designed to be identical to Unix which is what Mac OS is built on so some of the quirkiness is the same. The main difference is Apple computers have much better hardware support but at the same time your software options are going to be more limited than they would be on Linux.

Did make the change to Linux some time ago, but have been Distro hopping every so often. I think Nobara has been giving me the best experience.

Learning Linux does have a learning curve and I've made a guide on how to do certain tasks. Don't regret it though.

It also seems to have among the best Steam game loading times of the Linux distros I tried. <10 s and often <5 s for most Steam games while Fedora can take >30 s for several games I've tried to run on it. Couldn't tell you why.

I'm on both. Win 11 for my main computer, Linux for my Steam Deck and Laptop. About to be 3 in a couple months when I buy a used MAC. I'm working on opening a repair shop so I want to get used to the MAC interface. Obviously I won't be able to service them until I get a MAC repair license... which shouldn't be a thing but is.... but its nice to have experience with it.

I have more reasons to stick with Windows than switch. I'd agree that 11 was legitimately unfinished at launch but it's gotten better. I'd also agree the AI stuff is annoying but it can be disabled/ignored for now, the bigger nuisance is OneDrive.

That said, the future where an ID is required to use Windows is fast approaching so I've been dabbling with Linux more. I'm impressed but still running into the same issues with performance and compatibility that I always do.

Sticking to windows 11
It is my second least favorite version of windows after 8.1.

I tried Linux a few times over the years, it is nowhere near as intuitive and setting up basic things felt more difficult than it needed to be. Sure that's a "me" problem but I at least appreciate that Windows just works out of the box with a few tweaks

group policy is just a front end for registry keys. if you know the registry key you want to change you can just do it via regedit

but some particular policies are locked to certain editions of windows (i.e. theres some policies you can only apply to enterprise/education and not pro)

I dunno if policies even work on the home edition, i only use pro. at the very least, policies for 3rd party apps such as chrome/firefox would work on home edition

domain joining, group policy and bitlocker are like the three biggest features they add to the pro version of windows. i cant see them removing those from windows pro. maybe some rare specific individual policies might get changed so they only work for enterprise, but definitely not the feature as a whole.
