https://www.dexerto.com/entertainment/armed-police-swarm-student-after-ai-mistakes-bag-of-doritos-for-a-weapon-3273512/

Basically a school uses AI surveillance of students to monitor for threats. The AI recognized a bag of chips in the kid's pocket as a weapon, armed police showed up, scared the shit out of him.

The company that makes the AI product says it's all working as intended even if it issues false positives like this.

And the school said it would offer counseling services to any student who requests it but also the student himself said no one from the school has reached out to him.

Hooking current AI into any critical system like this with automation is a terrible mistake. AI can certainly be useful here for generating 'alerts' that a human could review and act upon, but we're not nearly at the point of reliability in AI for it to take decisive action like that.

Didn't read the article though, can't say if that's how it was implemented or not.

Seems like the company want the AI to be so sensitive that anything that might be potentially dangerous gets flagged. Which in itself is extremely dangerous. It just takes one over zealous/nervous cop to have a dead kid(s). Or to have the police stop caring because of all the false positives they will get, so when a legit threat happens they take their time thinking it's just another false positive.

What a country... If a school shooter doesn't get you it'll be a dozen police officers that shoot you for having pockets... -_-

Also, this kind of story demonstrates how AI isn't really 'intelligent' at all. They basically had a program designed to identify bulges in clothing and it triggered an armed response when someone had a bag of chips in their pocket.

AI can be used to suggest patterns in massive amounts of information. AI is not needed to determine "doritos or gun."

From the technology's webpage. Creepy as shit, in my opinion. Ubiquitous surveillance comes with a ton of downsides, and it seems like nobody is ever willing to talk about them. I recall reading a few months ago that there are smoke detectors now that have cameras and microphones that are being installed in stores, public housing, and even bathrooms that feature "threat detection".

This is the sorry state of schools. They don't really have a way of preventing school shootings. Actual laws and regulations need to be passed, but everyone views that as a lost cause schools are like "I got to do something." They buy the software because how can more information hurt? Then the software identifies a threat and everyone at the school panics because what if the software is correct? No school employee wants to be the one standing there if it is a gun that's pulled out so they ask the police to handle it and the police dial it up to 11 because that's the training for policing in America.

Oh yeah, something similar happened today. A guy from my office was carrying a tripod down the street, and someone mustve thought it was a gun, because the building behind got put on high alert.

They said someone reported a guy with a rifle. So sheriffs showed up to ask us about it. Since we (the people from the office) knew who they were looking for and that it was all just a misunderstanding, we just called him and he talked to the sheriffs for a few minutes and everything was cleared up.

Exactly. But somebody did have a picture apparently Doesn't seem to say if they had the image before the attack though.

Police later showed him the AI-captured image that triggered the alert. The crumpled Doritos bag in his pocket had been mistaken for a gun.

Seems like it contacts police directly:
It scans existing surveillance footage and alerts police in real time when it detects what it believes to be a weapon.

i know that the justice system is broken shit at this point but i cant see how a contract signed between two parties can somehow apply to a third party. i suspect what that means is that the student can sue the company but the school, which will also be facing a lawsuit and look to pass the buck, will not be able to turn around and sue the ai company.

I mean, I hate to say it, but that's probably correct. If it wasn't sensitive enough and a shooting happened, people would be pissed. Rightly so.

The issue is not that the AI is too sensitive, the issue is that it went from AI observes threat to cops being called. It should have alerted someone to look at the fucking image. And if the AI is any good, it should be trainable. "Suspicious item identified" becomes "no, that's a bag of chips." And then the AI takes that into account.
