It was a cute little series. It was also my first exposure to Gnomes, and my second exposure to Trolls. Since I watched it on cable, I never got to see the last episode. Just as well, since I heard it had a sad ending.

Years later I found a book that illustrated the many types of Gnomes. Since the Gnomes looked very much like variations of David, and the Trolls had those same types of tails and blue eyes, I'm wondering if there's a connection ?

Apparently the finale was an actual ending where it is implied that David and his wife died and were reincarnated as trees or something.

My family had cable very briefly as a kid but I remember watching this on (I think) Nickelodeon. It stood out as a cartoon series that came on before (mostly) live action programming like Fred Penner's Place and The Elephant Show.

They used to play this on heavy rotation on Nickelodeon back in the 80s. It was part of the Nick Jr block. Nickelodeon never aired the final episode probably because they thought it would be too traumatic for children.

There was also a sequel series that they aired following another gnome. It was made by the same studio, but I didn't watch it.

Huh. Well that was bittersweet. More bitter than sweet when you consider that Humans tend to cause a lot of deforestation. I can see why Nick decided not to air it.

It was one of my favorite shows as a kid. A guy from Devo helped do the music. Tom Bosley does great voice acting.

Kids shows today are so vapid and sterile. They need more shows like this one that actually have real moments of heart, joy, and loss.

Perhaps. On the original run of Gargoyles, they aired the episode where Broadway accidentally shot Elisa uncut, but every repeat airing had it censored. I believe even the Disney plus version is censored.
