Trump just keeps winning! Be interesting if BYD opens up some manufacturing plants in Ontario as part of a deal like this.

I doubt it. Otherwise you'll end up in the same situation Ireland is in between the UK and EU.

No, registering a car from Canada in the States and vice versa is fairly annoying from what I've heard.

If any Chinese EV manufacturers open plants in Canada it likely will be with the idea of eventually trade between Canada and the States will normalize and thus Canada will become a vector for them to be able to import vehicles into the country.

You are almost certainly going to have to pay the 100% Biden Tariff which AFAIK, is one of the only things Trump hasn't revoked from Biden's administration.

You guys talking about buying in Canada to bring to US have never heard of FMVSS? The chance to bring a vehicle not certified would be in 25 years.

Yeah, in general a car needs to be 25 years or older before you can import it to America. You can get around it in some exceptions but it is a very annoying process.

China is really the winner in all these trade deals. Trump just fast forwarded their global dominion which makes think this could potentially end in a war down the road. US might have a strong military, but the lack of serious and intelligent people on top will back fire.

Next time you start a trade war, make sure the other countries dont have so much leverage on your economy.

Chinese EVs are being treated as frontier tech like phones. Getting the latest chips and software stacks and aerodynamic styles.

BYD would have some work to do to implement NACS and following US/CA safety standards. And electronic doors with no physical backup or handles won't fly.

I'm not talking about imports from individuals, I'm talking about companies doing vehicle imports. Ford for instance builds some vehicles in Canada and Mexico and imports them into the USA and they sure aren't waiting 25 years to do it.

WTF is this article? It says Canada followed the US in imposing 100% tariffs on China EVs "last year". The fuck? Trump's tariffs are from THIS year. And it says the move mainly helped the US auto industry? No it fucking didn't lol.

They're not talking about Trump's tariffs, they're talking about Biden's 100% tariff on Chinese EVs which Canada mirrored in 2024.

https://www.utilitydive.com/news/joe-biden-china-tariff-hikes-ev-battery-semiconductor-final/727014/

The USA wanted to protect their car manufacturers and stop cheap EVs from China so Biden imposed a 100% tariff and Canada followed along. There was pressure from the Biden admin for Canada to put in place the tariff but I don't think it's generally known how much pressure since Canada often would mirror the USA in stuff like this.

Of course 2025 is very different from 2024 so time to rethink things like this.

Please reread this entire topic. Biden and Trudeau both applied narrow tariffs on Chinese EVs. The kind of narrow tariffs that Reagan actually supported in the TV ad that's been going around if you needed additional frame of reference.

Do such tariffs work? Probably not. Regardless of whether BYD vehicles were going to flood the North American market, we're not seeing American manufacturers match what BYD is trying to do in a reasonable time frame.

Very few North American manufacturers have been interested in low cost EVs, they like them mostly being a luxury vehicle market. Its infuriating.

No worries, with all the absolute insanity going on with tariffs this year and Trump's talking about them last year it's easy enough to overlook Biden's more strategic and focused tariffs from last year even if I personally disagree with Biden's EV tariff since I feel like it only exists to help North American auto manufacturers keep on gouging us on the transition to EVs.

why

More options for Canadian consumers. I assume cheaper options since American electric cars are incredibly expensive.

I would have to assume that opening up the Canadian market to Chinese cars would also signify and facilitate more trade between Asia and Canada which is desired by Canada since their continental trading partners are volatile and unreliable.

There's a 25 year car import law, iirc. You have to wait for a car to be 25 years old before you can get it registered in the states without a bunch of regulations getting in the way.

We have a FIPA agreement with China. The reason for the tariffs is for them to not exercise their investment portfolio. Once invested, they can ignore all Canadian laws in the factory they set up without much resistance. It's a tricky situation.
