Bluetooth headphones are definitely better. I can understand liking wired headphones more but it makes sense that they are no longer the default that you have to go out of your way to use them on portable devices

I can't really think of any real answers myself though. Uhh, I kinda miss silly words like "pwn". But I don't know if that's a fad, it's more like missing slang of your generation

They sound worse and have latency. So what part is better? That they cost 10 to 100 times more and sound the same as dollar store earbuds?

They are more portable. I don't have the best quality music on my phone anyway so if the sound quality really mattered I would listen on on a non-portable device that does have a headphone jack.

You roll up the cable and stick it in your pocket. It always works. Your battery is never dead

Because you stick them in your ears and they just work. If you are worried that much about the battery life I have bad news about the phone you are using them with

Also if you want to use wired headphones so much just use them with a USB C adapter, it's basically the same thing. Speaking of which, not having a dedicated headphone jack allows the portable devices themselves to become more portable.

IDK that the sound quality thing is entirely true. My understanding is a phone/other device would need to amplify the sound before it goes out the headphone jack, whereas wireless would obviously have the amplification withing the headphones. So if you have BT cans with good amplification then you aren't dependent on the amplification quality of the audio source device. But I heard that phones with jacks generally made the amplification worse over time, so in a sense the switch to BT was just solving a problem of their own making.

I don't really mind wireless headphones because if I'm using them instead of speakers it's generally because I'm moving around, so not having a wire in the way is nice. Latency also doesn't matter for listening to music, which is my main use case. I could see how that's a problem with videos and video games, but how often are you doing those things on a device that has no jack?

Never saw that, though I did see the comedians performing in Saudi Arabia get a ton of flack for it (within the last month or so).

Though it's less about just "selling out" and more about the hypocrisy. The ones who eat the most backlash tend to be the ones most likely to get moralistic about other social issues, then suddenly grow really quiet about far worse offenses when they're handed enough money. Especially when they suddenly self-censor their comedy to avoid offending their hosts (potentially out of fear of being literally murdered), or otherwise show how willing to compromise everything they claim to stand for for a paycheck.

In music, the real "sell out" scorn was mostly reserved for the sort of acts (often punk bands) who would scream about how much the industry sucked or how capitalism sucks or how much happier they were playing to small crowds in run-down clubs because those people care, as opposed to just putting out mass produced and over-engineered slop... and then do literally all of the things they railed against the moment someone invites them in.

Generally, if you avoid taking those really hard, vocal, "principled" stands in the first place, people are less likely to care whether or not you sell out. Because most people do understand that most things are just business these days (and have been for as long as any of us today have been alive). But when you try to paint yourself as not being like that, only to prove that you are, people tend to feel betrayed.

Bluetooth compression ruins the sound

While I don't doubt that's true, that sounds like one of those nonsensical audiophile complaints. Your average consumer isn't going to be able to tell the difference between wireless and wired headphones coming from a smartphone. If you care enough about that quality difference you're going to be using the kind of equipment that will always have a jack output anyway

That's a viable workaround, but it doesn't exactly solve the problem that's causing the frustration.

Phones are generally quite a bit larger now than they were when headphone jacks were standard, at least in the dimensions that really impact portability. Being half a millimetre thinner doesn't make one 155*75 mm rectangle any easier to fit in a pocket than another. Being 155*75 mm instead of 105*50 mm absolutely does, and that is the difference you're looking at between modern 6+ inch screens and the 3.5-4" screens of the smartphones available 15+ years ago.

What it does do is make them cheaper to manufacture, but those savings aren't passed on to consumers, so that's not a meaningful defense.

If I listened wired and wireless side by side it's possible I'd be able to hear the difference, but I'm not someone who has used BT headphones and instantly been like holy shit this is awful. I think most consumers are probably like me. But again, my use case is one where I'd favor not having a wire anyway, as my phone is one that still has the jack but I don't use it.

Phones being smaller is definitely something that I miss. I just can't get behind the idea of actually watching stuff on a little 6ish inch screen. Not worth it to me for how these things are barely pocketable anymore. Some people say it's not just about the screen size but being able to fit a bigger battery, which is true, but I wonder if the battery life is really even better since it'd also be offset by having to run a bigger screen and more powerful hardware. Personally I haven't really noticed any obvious improvement in how long the battery lasts in ~15 years of owning smartphones.
