I'd been using gel for a while but given the thinning of my hair it's just been looking awful. Went to the Supercuts this weekend for a trim and the stylist recommended hairspray instead of gel. She spritzed me with some Paul Mitchell and it seemed to do the trick. All I'm really looking for is hold.

Just curious if anyone is dealing with it similarly.

Just go bald.

Look into boldify products and see if that achieves what you're looking for

this. seriously, everyone can tell you're trying to hide the bald spot, either embrace it or shave it all off.

If it's just thinning around the crown and not an actual bald spot then boldify products (or a competitor) might suffice.

I started thinning around the crown a couple years ago so I cut my hair shorter now and apply a little bit which blends well.

If that actually becomes a bald spot I'll likely just start buzzing it, or consider scalp micro pigmentation. I'm 40 so I'm happy I made it this far with what I've got on my head.

Hairspray smells quite awful.

Try something in between that and gel.

Like fine hair styling mousse.

not really. none of the men in my family have gone bald. no beards though, i can grow a wicked set of mutton chops but if i try to grow a beard the best i get is the thick pube look.

The point is the bald are more evolved, more intelligent and more sophisticated. So next time a hairy child comes up and says, "Hey, let me rub your head for luck," you just tell that child, "That's not what your mother rubbed."

And youve confirmed that everything in your bloodwork is fine? Just saying that some men just assume thinning hair is unavoidable but sometimes other issues can cause it.

My sister had thinning hair because of hemochromatosis.

*its a white cream (like cortizone cream) that you use a pea sized amount rub on your palms then apply to damp/slightly wet hair

I shaved my head and I regret it. Not all heads look good bald.

Have you looked into a finasteride + minoxidil spray to treat thinning hair? The side-effects are less noticeable than the pill form and it actually works.

Yeah minoxidil and finasteride are first line and proven options. Definitely worth taking a look into.

Only thing is that it takes like 6-12 months before any benefits are seen and you have to take them in perpetuity otherwise you lose any gains.

I was under the impression that they were more for stopping loss than gaining hair, but I didn't pay much attention.

Going bald wasn't that big of a deal for me, it's not like I was making good choices with my hair in the first place.

It doesn't cause hair loss but if you are already losing hair, excessive handling of your hair might cause the already loosening hair to fall out. Same thing happens if you wash your hair too aggressively. You can still use hair product, you just gotta be gentle with it.

Try a shaping/holding paste. A little jar lasts me most of the year and I have a full, thick head of hair.

Either use a clay matte pomade, shave it off or get hair transplant.

If youre in the early stages of thinning, matte hair products will make your hair look thicker by allowing less light through to your scalp.
