Seems like most popular muffins to eat in America are sweet and cake like and some of which have some sort of frosting or glaze of some sort on them. At what point are we just going to admit we are eating cupcakes for breakfast?

"Muffins are just bald cupcakes" is a joke comedians have been making for decades.

I think the difference is just that cupcakes are frosted.

Muffins are denser, generally less sweet, can have things like fruit or nuts baked in, and are more similar to various kinds of bread. Cupcakes are tiny cakes, fluffier and sweeter. The ingredients to make them are different. An unfrosted cupcake is still a cupcake and a frosted muffin would still be a muffin.

I just ate something labeled as a muffin on the packaging but it just tasted like a cake and had a light glazing on the top. I guess a cupcake has actual frosting stacked on top of it.

Muffins are technically a kind of bread.

Type of bread is different. Cupcakes exist solely to carry and complement the frosting.

Yeah muffins are closer to bread on the spectrum whereas cupcakes are closer to cake.

From what I tasted, muffins have more crispiness thanks to the top and have stuff like blue berries in them. The nonfrosting part of a cupcake is a softer more uniform blend.

its density. cupcakes are light and airy because you whip a lot of air into the batter before you make them. muffins are denser because you dont whip all that air in.

Muffins are Christmas pudding in muffin form. Cupcakes are muffins in cake form.

More importantly, there was this minor meme joke about some dude pretending muffin is more for the sophisticated gentlemen's sugary treat while cupcake is for just kids with all the colorful frosting and not to mention icing it has, but I can't locate it currently.
