This wouldn't make me feel better or happier about shopping at Target. It would just make me feel uncomfortable, annoyed, creeped out, and like the employees are suspecting I want to steal something. Not an atmosphere anyone would enjoy unless they're a complete narcissist.

This is just a different phrasing of something that we've always had to do. A very stupid phrasing that's blowing up. It's literally just asking if someone needs help or saying hi like you always would.

I mean...smiling and saying hello to customers is a pretty standard part of most retail jobs? It's how I was trained at the grocery store as a teenager. Don't they already do this?

Or is it more that Target is actively looking for excuses to fire employees for having a bad day one time?

If it looks like I need help, then ask. Don't just do it as a checkbox.

It's not hypocrisy or fakery, it's simply part of their job to try and make customers feel welcome.

If you prefer to shun contact and not engage, that's fine. Entirely your choice. They do it for those who appreciate it.

except it's corporate's way of trying to compensate for completely undermining billions of dollars in investing in pro-DEI policies and initiatives.

So they basically pissed on a lot of minorities and their solution to compensate is just force employees to... smile.

Yeah, it's what a psychologist once told me when she was trying to help me manage my social anxiety from ASD. It's still a problem because it requires a calm presence of mind to even think about such things in order to manage it, but I guess if I had a job like that, I might be able to prepare myself every day.

But on the face of it, it makes them look very unfriendly towards autistic employees or the prospect of hiring such, even if that isn't their intent.

Yeah, I can't stand things like mandatory catch phrases and stuff. For example, the people that work at Chick-fil-A always have to say "my pleasure" about things which just sounds so weird and forced.

When I worked in retail I always got chewed out for not smiling. Im autistic. I struggle with facial expressions, particularly smiling on demand. I have so many awkward school photos highlighting that.

Of course the suits dont care about any of that.

I worked at Price Chopper/Market 32 and they had a very similar policy although I think their "greet and ask if they need anything" was a much bigger area

This-I have plenty of problems with Target and dont shop there anymore. But store requires staff to be friendly to customers doesnt seem particularly revelatory to me.
