A mad scientist from an alternate future gives you a food replicator from Star Trek, but it has a catch. In order for it to work, you have to "charge" it by eating nothing but MREs for an entire year. This includes beverages, you can only drink what comes out of the MRE or plain bottled water. You can only have three meals per day, and no snacking in between, even if it's a snack in MRE form.

After this year, the replicator will create whatever meal you want for a full year, with no limit to the type of food/drink or the quantity. After this year, you must eat another year's worth of MREs in order to fully charge the replicator.

You cannot cheat by stockpiling food during the full year of unlimited access; anything you create will disappear after 2 hours unless eaten. You also cannot partially charge the replicator (for example, one week of MREs for one week of unlimited access). It must either be fully charged or not charged at all. You cannot have somebody else eat the MREs for you.

And before anyone says it, yes, I know replicators can create things other than food. This one only creates food.

I was going to say yes, there are some fire MRE'S. Like chili Mac. But lost me at the drink part lol. If I could drink a few beers that'd be different.

I was gonna say yes until the part where you basically only get 1 year of replicated food in exchange. If it was longer I probably would.

I was tired of pooping anyway, this works out.

I've been having good luck with DuckDuckGo's video replacement thing, but it just flat out doesn't work on GF embeds.

This is the reason it's a no go for me. If I could still drink tap water I would consider it further.

This. I think unlimited food of any type you desire is worth a year of sacrifice and suffering. But having to do it every other year to keep it going is a lot to ask.

Without hesitation. I eat MREs for fun, and having grown up in Florida, it was common to survive on them for a month or more during hurricane season.

I got some German MREs a couple months back..Quite good.

Dang, gonna suck when I ask for glass of milk or soda and it just splashes everywhere once replicated.

Because a glass is neither food or drink.

I was cool with the idea presented in the topic title. The additional details of having to keep recharging it by spending another year eating nothing but MREs kills it. Fuck that. Not worth it. Especially with that beverage condition. Even if I wanted to use it to start some crazy "everything imaginable" restaurant and make money, it wouldn't be worth it to me to have to eat nothing but MREs every other year.

There's not really a reason to not take the deal. You can just not charge the replicator if you don't want to.

Probably not; the conditions are too limiting for the reward - I can already gorge myself on all my favorite food if I really wanted.

Nah. At least per canon established by DS9, replicated food is mid at best as it cant generate complex proteins, so while the convenience factor of having one it doesnt really make a year of shitty food worth it.

That is because that was piss poor Cardassian technology!

Replicators as established in TNG and Lower Decks make every wonderful food you can imagine. There is a whole Lower Decks episode about the command crew finally giving the ensigns access to the replicators that make the good stuff.

Ya know MREs are made by different countries and they come from different eras as well so there's a bunch of them to choose from

Does it have to be American MREs? Cause I think some other nations have better ones

Not worth it. Having to eat nothing but MREs for one year is not equivalent value.
