Current Events » WB says the Suicide Squad game contributed to a $200 million hit to revenue
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has disappointed Warner Bros. Discovery, owner of developer Rocksteady, to the tune of a $200 million hit to revenue.

Reporting its Q1 financial results, Warner Bros. Discovery said its Games revenue declined significantly as a result of a tough comparison with last years best-selling video game Hogwarts Legacy. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice generated significantly lower revenues compared with those generated by Hogwarts Legacy during the same three-month period, the company said.

In a follow-up investor-focused call, Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav called the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League disappointing , before Warner Bros. Discovery chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels detailed an impairment charge the company absorbed as a result of the games failure.

"Starting with Studios, the $400 million+ year-over-year decline during Q1 was primarily due to the very tough comp we faced in games against the success of Hogwart's Legacy last year in the first quarter, in conjunction with the disappointing Suicide Squad release this past quarter, which we impaired , leading to a $200 million impact to EBITDA during the first quarter," Wiedenfels said. EBITDA stands for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was panned by critics upon launch, with extremely low player numbers on Steam. Some of the frustration stems from Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League not being another Batman game from Rocksteady, despite the fact it is set within the Arkhamverse. The developers Batman Arkham series is much-loved by fans, with 2011s Batman: Arkham City in particular held up as one of the greatest, if not the greatest superhero video game of all time. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, on the other hand, is a live service third-person combat game in which Batman is a villain.

Rocksteady now faces tough questions around Warner Bros. long-term commitment to Suicide Squads live service. Warner Bros. is yet to announce Rocksteady's next project. But earlier this month, it revealed Batman: Arkham Shadow, a VR game developed by Camouflaj, maker of the Iron Man VR game, and set for release exclusively on the Meta Quest 3 later in 2024.

Yet their big takeaway from this is probably to quadruple down on mobile/freemium and live service games. Such a joke of a studio. I get they're the only movie studio to have a gaming division, but I think they're hiring the wrong exec heads for it.

They literally doubled down a year before release when they announced the last delay and said they won't remove live service despite all the complaints. Like, they KNEW people hated the concept and even acknowledged the complaints and said they aren't changing shit basically.

They would've basically had to completely rebuild the game, better to release it and take the hit than burn more dollars on making it good

How much 100's of millions of dollars do these companies need to loose before listening to what their consumer base wants?

This was a terrible idea from the premise alone, the Gaas model killed the game before it released.

Time to quadruple down on it then lol. Can't turn back now even though we've lost $200 million in revenue, that would prove the fans right!

You could've had something like Helldivers 2 (which smoked your game btw) as a live service game and it would've still blown up in your face like it almost did for that game when Sony tried for a mere week to retrofit it as such for their platform.

Throwing away money is great, WB. Keep it up...

I really have no idea why studios thought they could take the experience of cheap ass gacha games and extrapolate that onto the AAA industry. There can only be so many popular live service games on the market at any one time. All the phone gacha games can only thrive because they're cheap to make and maintain relative to the money they make.

This. Nobody wanted this game.
Furthermore, The GOP is a Fascist Organization and must be destroyed
WB is so mismanaged
I have nothing else to say
WB are idiots for not seeing how Marvel's Avengers lost money despite it being a more popular property with characters that people actually want to play as. That should have been a clear sign that a live service Suicide Squad game was destined to fail.
Good. Live service games cannot die fast enough
If it was about babies we'd have universal maternal care. There would be no charge no matter how complex the delivery. But its not about babies, is it?
who would have seen that coming...
Trying is the first step towards failure, so just dont give it a shot and you cant dissapoint.

They could have at least made alterations to change some aspects of it to make it somewhat more favorable. The game was already delayed 3 or so times. Maybe 2 or 3 years. I can't remember. They knew from the beginning people hated it. Instead, they chose to leave it exactly how people hated. Or flat out cancel it years before release. Isn't that what WB has been doing anyway for tax write-offs?

Good.

Don't worry the next service game will be the one to make it. WB execs are shit and paid morons that always fail upwards.
i really wish some of these ceos would get out of their ivory towers and listen (just a little) to the gaming community instead of reports and stats.

Gaas was the least of that game's issues. It just wasn't fun to play. Gaas aren't bad if they're both fun to play and don't go crazy with the monetization

Being unfun to play in order to push monetization is literally the entire point of a GaaS.

Man why couldn't Suicide Squad have been a PS5 exclusive instead of FFVII Rebirth
I dont get why WB didnt just ask the studio to create a mobile game like Marvel Snap if they wanted to milk consumers through microsanctions so bad.

That way even if failed it wouldnt have mattered due to the low cost and resources poured into it.

While you guys are right, he isn't wrong that the game could've found some form of success if the game was good/fun. Helldivers 2, Fortnite, Destiny 2, FF14, and Genshin Impact are all GaaS and they found levels of financial success that non-GaaS will never be able to make. But that's the thing though, people will give a game more leeway if it is good, something that the new Suicide Squad game couldn't even do from its inception to its execution. It's just an expensive failure all around that WB will never learn from.

This game holds a very ominous place in my household.

My wife knows very little about video games, but I mentioned this game in passing when it was first in development, saying something like "If it can be anything like the Arkham games, but with all the Suicide Squad members, it has potential to be really good".

And then it came out.

And then unknown to me, she got it for me for my birthday from the kids.

And I played it once.

And now anytime she sees me playing anything other than that, she asks why I'm not playing it, and I don't have the heart to tell her that it's god awful.
It takes zero effort to be a good person.

Sweet baby helped in making this game shitty, so I disagree.
As with most companies in America they do not care about the consumer because we will just consume mindlessly or so they think. They only care about the shareholders we consumers are just a pesky nuisance it just baffles them that we are not throwing our hard earned money at their trash.

Real shame it was sold at a premium price with cosmetic DLC and battle passes as a live service title. I don't regret not buying it despite the beta being enjoyable. Really did like it, though.

They are a team that helps with narratives, making plots cohesive, and generally making the characters likable. They failed at every single one of those. So either they were brought in and paid to do absolutely nothing, making them a shitty useless company. Or they were brought in and what we saw in the finished game were the fruits of their labor, also making them a shitty useless company. There is no way to slice it where they arent a shitty useless company.
