Of the season? Absolutely. Of the year? Not quite. I still think Inori from Medalist is my favorite female character of year, but Scarlet definitely has a chance to take it before the season is done.

Knowing nothing about that series or character you're gonna have to sell it to me if you're gonna change my mind about her being better than a noblewoman who throws hands.

Nothing I could say would sell it more than just watching the show itself. Medalist is one of the best anime of the year, a masterclass of great writing and character work as well as a total redemption story for Studio ENGI and their previously bad reputation. As for Inori herself: she's adorable, she's badass, she's inspirational, and she's a goldmine of reaction faces. No other anime character this year (female, male, or other) made me smile more than she did.

I'll give this a watch if it's on crunchyroll, but just know that I'm still leaning towards elegant aristocrat who throws hands because that is genuinely just such an awesome juxtaposition.

Look at this "animation". Just fucking look at it. It's literally just a static .png being slowly moved down the screen. I've seen better "animation" from shitty flash videos on Albino Blacksheep and eBaumsWorld in the early 2000's. (I'm really showing my age with that comparison aren't I?)

THIS IS A MAN. Male voice, male pronouns, male physique before the fight, male physique after the fight, yet for this fight scene he apparently has noticeable female breasts. How does a studio fuck up so badly that they accidentally genderflip a character for one scene? Is this a bad outsource job? Is this AI? Or are the animators at J.C. Staff who worked on this scene so divorced from the source material that they made this mistake and no one else caught it before the episode made it to air? Either way, it's a massive fuck-up.

It's very rare for me to drop a show when I'm this far into it, but OPM S3 is just that bad. I can read about the animation fuck-ups on Reddit and laugh at them that way.

Minor in comparison, but the dub of Pokmon episode Pallet Party Panic has Oak mentioning Professor Ivy for the first time and referring to Ivy as a man (he) and Misty in the next dialogue uses the correct gender (she).

Not disputing anything, just my mind went to that error.

Scarlet continues to be best girl of the season. Also, the dub for this show continues to be hilarious. The awkward "No?" the random soldier said when Scarlet asked to borrow his spear (she borrowed it anyways) made me laugh, and the dialogue in the dub is just great in general.

TBF, there is no group that calls for AI slop more than the "subtitles-only weeb" crowd. This is the future they called for.

Crunchyroll, very specifically, has been on a "replacing the paid humans with AI" thing. It is less about me not reading the article and more me knowing more about the situation than the article went over.

It's an entirely different aspect of the situation and honestly I think you are just totally missing the point here. AI subtitling would be about the quality of the text and translation itself while this article is entirely about other aspects, such as layout, placement, subtitle tracking, etc

Basically in summary it talks about how the standardization away from an anime-specialized tool towards a general subtitling tool, as pushed by netflix and amazon prime, is trashing the one major thing crunchyroll had that made its subtitles look so much nicer than everyone else in the business. because they're being dragged towards using a subtitling tool and format that may work okayish for live action but is not great in anime, which has a much higher amount of on-screen text. It's the subtitling process that gets you garbage like this

because after funimation's takeover of crunchyroll basically all the people who know what the unique challenges of anime subtitling are out of the industry and the remains have all just settled down to make bad subs like this because they know they more or less have a monopoly on the market

I've noticed that recently too, the subtitle typesetting has gotten quite a bit worse. Thankfully, 2 of the anime I'm most enjoying this season are ones I can just watch dubbed instead. I'll probably start waiting for dubs more often on shows that get them.
