Ok hear me out.

Just about everybody who grew up with the Power Rangers is in their late 30s and early 40s by now, so let's make a series that doesn't shy away from stuff like violence.

There is some precedent for this in the comics, for example there's one about a team from the 60s where just about everybody died on their first mission, killed on the moon in really brutal and graphic ways including asphyxiation and being crushed under a boulder.

We should have a darker Power Rangers series written with older audiences who grew up with the franchise in mind, that can really lean into things like the horrors of war and that not everything they fight is some wacky guy in a costume themed after a tube of toothpaste.

I seem to remember that the movie from a few years ago kind of did this but wussed out when it came to things like killing one of the Rangers to establish actual stakes and consequences.

Id be down for a show where the team is in their 30s/40s and they're dealing with real life issues while also being heroes.

Gotta find a new school for the kids cause the Megazord stepped on theirs, dealing with heating bills cause a living blizzard monster froze town for a week, stuff like that. Maybe even one of the rangers dealing with a cancer diagnosis while still wanting to be part of the team if you want to be really depressing.

I don't really understand why adults want the things they enjoyed as kids, but with more graphic violence and sex.

You lose the essence of the thing you enjoyed (and can still enjoy, of course!) for the sake of gaining content which you can find organically included, rather than tacked on, elsewhere.

I always thought it could work as a CW-like show, which I guess the reboot movie sort of was. I wouldn't want it to be like that stupid short from a few years back where theyre having threesomes, doing coke and die brutally. That's like a 10 year olds version of being edgy and its awful.

Doesn't just have to be more violence and sex. There are conversations they can't have and denials of obvious realities they must include in stock sentai.

It would be funny and relatable to have to clock a shift on no sleep, because you were busy saving the supermarket from a godzilla reject and then trying to keep your infant asleep.

I wasn't really talking about filling the whole thing with graphic violence and sex, just treating it a bit more seriously and realistically than the original series does because, well, it's a magic martial arts show for kids.

I guess a good comparison to make would be the game Digimon Survive compared to the first season of the Digimon anime. Same basic concept and storyline, but Survive went in a much darker and intense direction and had its cast behaving more believably to what was happening around them. It was a game that felt like it was made for adults who watched the anime as kids.

That's kind of what I'm looking for here.

Or... hear me out here.... actually adapt Super Sentai properly instead of quarter assing it. Mega Force and Super Mega Force weren't even the same show as Sentai. They didn't even attempt to translate those seasons, they made up their own and it was beyond awful. How you have an entire story written out for you and you decide that your fan story is better I have no idea.

Seems pretty antithetical to the entire genre. The entire point is mindless fluff for the kids, and making it "adult" would just be turning it into an entirely different genre.

To be fair many times they've gone full off the rails it has worked really well (In Space, Lost Galaxy, RPM). MF sucked because it was a blatant nostalgia grab with 0 personality, not for not adapting Goseiger/Gokaiger

I have a sci-fi novella series that was initially based on that premise. I diverged from it once I realized the comics had explored the themes I wanted to, or outright did a lot of my ideas (some of them scene for scene and word for word).

There's zero interest from traditional publishing and I don't know if I want to self-publish but I'm pretty sure there's an audience for it, so I do want to get it out there.

It won't come out until Bat in the Sun decides they can no longer grift on JDF's legacy. So long as White Dragon is "in the works", they have a current ongoing association with him rather than just a past one.
