I feel like I haven't played that many new releases this year or seen that many that I'm super interested to go seek out, so I'm interested in hearing about peoples' candidates for their own game of the year this year. Especially if it's stuff that's a little more niche and not covered as much! Feel free to tell me about Doom or Animal Crossing too if that meant something to you but I'm really interested in broadening my scope on stuff that came out this year.

Mostly all I played this year that I really liked was Monster Train (really excellent deckbuilder that I've sunk hundreds of hours into) and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 (great retro platformer that really expands and builds upon the Castlevania III pastiche into its own thing). I like One Step From Eden too (another deckbuilder based on MMBN) as well but didn't play it as much. Monster Train's easily my GOTY but I like, didn't play that many games.

I'm not sure what games I'm interested in playing. I'm really curious about Spiritfarer but I'm also really worried that it'll probably make me really sad.
Well, I've played Final Fantasy VII Remake and Trails of Cold Steel IV, and they're both good!
Ive mostly played Crusader Kings III.

Its like II but better and morenaccessible.

Trials of Mana
The Last of Us Part II and Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time
Hades is easily my GOTY and better than anything from 2019 as well; currently have it ranked as my #21 of all-time. Rogue-like goodness with phenomenal combat and a compelling narrative presentation that reinforces the rogue-like structure in a way I've never seen before. I imagine it will be the type of game I pick up and play for a session every few months thanks to the brevity of each run.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Paper Mario: The Origami King
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2
Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory

All four of these could've been garbage, but all of them have thoroughly impressed me.

Also gonna do a quick shoutout for Among Us. Definitely one of my favorite multiplayer experiences ever.
Hades is the best roguelike Ive ever played and you should play it even if you dont like them or think you wont like them.
I just decided to change this sig.
Blaaaaaaargh azuarc
I think I thought about buying Hades back in 2019 and then decided not to, and all of a sudden it's super popular. Now I wish I had gotten on that bandwagon early
I'm not sure all of what I have played from this year, but Ori and the Will of the Wisps is definitely my favorite.
KCF can't actually be a real person but he is - greengravy
If you smell what the rock is cooking he's cooking crap - ertyu
I still gotta play the first Ori
FF7 Remake
Super Mario Bros 35
Streets of Rage 4

There are others I enjoyed, but those were the excellent ones.
Bear Bro
The Empire of Silence
Oh yeah Super Mario Bros 35 was pretty fun, though I feel like it needs some improvements that it won't receive and will eventually not be playable so oh well.
As someone who did not like FF7 at all, FF7 Remake completely changed how I looked at FF7 and made it one of my favorite games. The overall presentation of FF7 Remake is off the wall. My girlfriend who has 0 experience with FF7 played it and loved it too.

The only reason FF7R is not my GOTY is because Hades came out this year. Easily the tightest and most polished roguelike/roguelite I played.
I feel completely refreshed. Like I just put on fresh underwear on New Year's Day.
I'm currently in the middle of Yakuza: Like a Dragon and I'm absolutely loving it. Haven't felt so thoroughly absorbed in a JRPG in a while, though maybe that's to be expected since it's also very much a Yakuza game, and a wildly ambitious one at that. (For points of JRPG comparison I should note I haven't played FF7R yet since I'm waiting on the PC release. Seems like something I'd love, though!)
Let the voice of love take you higher,
With this gathering power, go beyond even time!
Unless I'm forgetting some, it looks a lot like the Game Awards. Hades, Ghost of Tsushima, FFVIIR, Streets of Rage 4... I'm going to say Them's Fightin' Herds just so I can say a fighting game.
"God Hand is the ultimate expression of the joy of humanity, specifically the punching part of the joy of humanity."-Shigeru Miyamoto
Ori 2 and Hades

Hades is number 2 and I like it more than any 2018 or 2019 game
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia is probably my favorite game this year despite how much I loved Hades, but it's flawed in enough ways that I'm a bit hesitant to recommend it. There's a demo, at least.

There is no bad time to get on the Hades bandwagon.

13 Sentinels is worth checking out if you would like to see how many plot twists can fit in a single game without it collapsing on itself.

Paradise Killer is the last game I played through, and it's very charming and interesting. It didn't really hit for me as the detective game it's sold as, but the world and characters were fascinating enough that it might be worth checking out anyway.

For our own safety
World of Horror was definitely the best game I played this year. A 1 bit ode to Lovecraft and Junji Ito done in an old RPG game style format, but it's very easy to get into and there's a ton of variations to each scenario. It's one of the best adaptations of cosmic horror ever and easily the best in video game format.

youre probably better off not being on the wagon early because now you get to just play the whole finished product at once!

I feel like I havent played a lot of new releases this year either but Hades is for sure my #1 as of now.
For your Azuarc .
At least Kupo has class and doesn't MESSAGE the people -Dr Pizza
I played "a short hike" which was short indie game about a bird flying to the top of a mountain.

It was really good, and probably the best designed game I played this year. I absolutely hate walking simulators but this game nailed it by making the movement fun.

Also lots of people around me liked spiritfarer even though I thought it stunk.

This year I mostly played old games,
So i played only 2 2020 games - Resident Evil 3 Remake and Ori and the Will of the Wisps

RE3R was very dissapointing sadly
Ori was fantastic so I guess that's my GOTY? (not saying much if I played only two games)
Will play Shantae and the Seven Sirens this weekend or the next, but I don't have my hopes high

I actually really like early access games though
Man this year is almost as good as 2017 for games holy shit
trails from zero
You shine, and make others shine just by being near them.
i too recently played Paradise Killer, and it whips - really worked for me on the detective front mostly down to the open world structure and the freedom it gives you to pursue leads as you choose, and how it keeps everything ambiguous and in play the whole time.

played a ton of Hades, and yes it's good.

Kentucky Route Zero Act V ofc.

Tales from Off-Peak City Vol. 1 is as cool as every other game in that setting.

Dpanneur Nocturne is lovely poke around a cool space for about an hour.

this is a world... where azuarc eats gurus

XenoblaDE

Welcome to your Divinity.
ff7 remake was the best game ive played this year I think
Congrats Black Turtle !
Ranking the games I finished this year
01. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition (Not sure if this counts as this year but it is more a remake than your normal DE)
02. Final Fantasy VII Remake
03. The Last of Us Part II (yeah screw the haters I loved it more than the first)
04. Demon's Souls (Pretty much the same game as the PS3 original but the only game that is a must-buy on the PS5 at the moment)
05. Ghost of Tsushima
06. DOOM Eternal
07. Hades
08. Nioh 2
09. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV
10. Animal Crossing: New Horizons (technically finished)
11. Ori and the Will of the Wisps
12. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
13. Resident Evil 3
14. Streets of Rage 4
15. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2

All the games from 1-2 are my GotYs. 3-5 IMO are must-buys. 5-12 are also all very good games. 13-15 are entertaining games worth your time but not necessary by any means.

I only finished the games that I enjoyed this year and didn't bother with the ones that didn't click hence why the positive reviews.
i really liked fall guys

it was my favorite of the like 4 games i played that came out this year
it's an underwater adventure ride
Hades while a very good game with pretty addictive gameplay is overrated to the skies like most good indie games. Everybody keeps talking about the how awesome the combat is (it is very fluid and tight but nothing deep) but nobody mentions the overly repetitive nature of the game. Beating the game for the first time was very satisfying but then having to beat it 9 more times to see the true ending exposed how small the game actually was.

Typical indie over exaggerated fanfare because it seems to be the cool thing to do in this generation of games. Same with Disco Elysium. My fucking God was that game overrated. Good but nowhere close to the best high budget games Jesus christ. And for reference, I beat both games in its entirety.

Hades is a very good game in its own right and definitely worth playing but nowhere is it even close to being GotY. One of the best indie games made? Maybe.
roll my fucking eyes. now I KNOW hades is good
Call of Duty: Warzone
Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics
Doom 64
Fall Guys
lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
Doom Eternal - Not a huge FPS person, but this game blew me away. Easily in my top 10 GOAT for just how nonstop-intense it is and how well all of the mechanics all work together
Fall Guys - Was good fun for the first season, kind of lost interest after that though
AC: NH - Played it daily for a few months before dropping it and never looking back, like more AC games
New World - Does enjoying a beta/alpha count?

I think that's about the extent of what I've played so far this year.

It's good. Just not GotY. Not even close.
Ori 2 and then FF7R
I loved FF7R as well, and I miss it.

Hi Nanis

What is your opinion on Control?
wololo
Way better than Alan Wake gameplay-wise but I prefer the overall story of Alan Wake more. Good fun. Nothing special.
Think I've only played a few 2020 releases

XIII, FF7R, TLOU2 and the Pokemon DLCs

I have enjoyed all of them to varying degrees! TLOU2 probably slightly edges out FF7R.

XIII 2020 loses points for being a technically disastrous remake, but the core of it is still XIII so I still love it and am grateful it exists at all.
Not to be confused with XIII_stones.

Persona 5 Royal
Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Trials of Mana

I think those are all the 2020 games I finished. I'm in the middle of FF7R
MZero , to the extreme
I never saw azuarc coming, but he won the Guru!
Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen was an amazing introduction to the series though it kinda makes Mask of Deception a lot more underwhelming after its finish.

Fall Guys is really good, but after getting fame level 40 in season 1 I have done much less in season 2.

I'm halfway through a whole bunch of 2020 games, including Sakura Wars, Robotics;Notes Elite, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. Each one of these is pretty good for what I've played of it so far.

azuarc may not know the strength of songs in VGMC, but he conquered the guru in Game of the Decade 2! Congrats!
I enjoyed every 2020 game I played this year

7 Remake
Royal
Cold Steel IV (about halfway through, don't see it being better than either of the above)
Animal Crossing
Hades
Murder By Numbers

Didn't play but want to: TLOU2, RE3make.
while you slept, the world changed
2020 games I played:
Genshin Impact
Hades
Lenna's Inception
Monster Train
Soda Dungeon 2

I'm doing a ranking topic of everything I played in 2020, so I'm not going to get into any detail here, but we're at the halfway point, roughly, and none of them have come up yet.
Video Game Music Contest 14 champion: Idola Phantasy Star Saga - Endeavour
Haven't played much from this year. Answer is probably Persona 5 Royal, especially if you've never played the original, but it could be Hades or 13 Sentinels. The storytelling of 13 Sentinels is definitely worth experiencing, though you should go in expecting that to be where you get the bulk of your entertainment. The gameplay, while probably having more depth than I give it credit for, can feel a bit lacking. But it's all worth it for the narrative.

azuarc is OP.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Paper Mario: The Origami King
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2
Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory
Hades
Persona 5 Royal
Animal Crossing New Horizons
Formerly ff6man.
Azuarc won the guru! Congrats!
