Oldies were once songs from the '70s when growing up in the '90s. Anything '90s is oldies now in 2024.

I nominated arcade games I think back when people were arguing over Street Fighter 2 in the SNES Rushmore. The thought process was it'd be cool to do a Rushmore about games famously found inside of an arcade and were important to the success of arcades. That could range from Galaga to Donkey Kong to Area 51 to NBA Jam to Dance Dance Revolution...pretty open in my mind anyway.

Mario VS Sonic facing the champion in a bonus match would have been great. For shame.

Also, just realized by the rules Zen listed here, the Top 100 List is eligible...!

BoI was my #2 game of the 2010s. I just started playing Hades about two months ago and put in 80 hours since then.

I recommend trying them back to back. I don't know that Hades is a better game, but returning to BoI after that was really jarring was a downer to recognize.

Both games could learn from each other.

  • Kept AC and Pokemon
  • Removed SSB since it came within a month of the Gamecube's launch.
  • Metroid and Metroid Prime are split now.
  • Dropped all the other games above.
  • Added Kirby, Mario Kart, and Xenoblade.

I think all games in this poll now have never had a mainline game release in the first month of a system launching -- call out mistakes if you see one! With that in mind, which Nintendo series is most ready to lead for a new system launch?

If they're "just" banning topics that can sometimes be divisive like religion, politics, all that...we may have more time. If they're doing inventory of all the boards they have and why, we may be on a shorter timeframe.

And it's hard to tell which is which.

And it's hard to trust the things anybody's being told.

And it's not like they have much history of providing warnings for closure either. It just sucks for our digital home.

MK8 Deluxe was only a month after the Switch.

To get to more of the point I think we're discovering here, how close to a system's launch do you have to be to be considered a launch game? Two weeks, a month, three months...?

Does Animal Crossing, Metroid, Pokemon, or Mario Kart have any releases within a month of their respective systems launching? Right now I think only Melee falls within that (and Pikmin too but it's pretty behind).

Thinking about remaking the poll with just the heavy hitters and removing Smash. Probably divide Metroid and Metroid Prime too.

Microsoft: 20-22-35 (62)
Sega: 14-37-26 (65)

(If 1st=2 points and 2nd=1 point)

Winning option right now:

Atari > Sega > Microsoft 35.9% (28 votes)

Microsoft is beating Sega in the second, third, and fourth most popular options right now. Microsoft also has more first place-votes than Sega...but losing with #1 like this really evens it back out to Sega. Little surprised Atari is doing this well but I get it.

Nintendo may not be in the poll but they exist. Even if you don't count that, the Atari Lynx came out before the Sega Game Gear.

Oh wow, never heard of the Lynx before. Duly noted!

Nintendo (and Sony too) each certainly had their own handheld systems, yes. I was just meaning this statement to be among the three of Atari/Microsoft/Sega being compared here.

I'll note that Sega is the only company here than made a handheld game system I'm aware of.

Also gonna note in terms of mascots that Master Chief, Pac-Man, and Sonic are all each huge in their own right.

Also-also noting that Minecraft is the best-selling game out of anything these three companies made, though Microsoft acquiring Minecraft instead of being Minecraft's creator from the beginning may matter for some opinions.

PS1 vs. N64 wasn't close. The PS1 sold around 100 million and the N64 sold around 30-35 million.

I feel like systems that didn't emerge from their generation as clear-cut winners have a hard case to make for this Rushmore. NES and PS2 were completely dominant, for example, and the Switch still might break the record for the most console sales ever. SNES/Genesis and N64/PS1 were much closer in comparison so it's harder to pick one of them over the rest.

Which reminds me.....

Drop: Xbox 360
Add: Atari 2600

(the 360/Wii/PS3-generation was the closest we've seen to a three-way tie sales-wise, so I'm gonna step back from them and go pre-crash for a rep)

I thought of Steam, but didn't think of it enough to write it out properly since I was focusing on console-makers. I suspect...

1-Nintendo
2-Sony
3-Steam

...then these three companies in the poll battle for #4-6 instead of #3-5.

In the N64's defense, it has Super Mario 64 and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for single-player impacts while Mario Kart 64 and Goldeneye shined for multi-player impacts. Its library isn't too deep and Goldeneye doesn't hold up so well a quarter-century later, but those were then-exclusive titans of that era that would stand up well in similar comparisons against most systems.

I'm not picking N64 for the Rushmore, even though it was arguably my favorite system. It has games you can't ignore, yes, but I think other consoles have stronger arguments.

Inspired by the latest Rushmore topic about home consoles.

I took out Nintendo and Sony, as they are the two likely favorites for console makers with the biggest impacts in the gaming industry. I suspect picking #3-5 is harder than picking #1-2, but feel free to call this out if you feel differently!

You can consider these three companies of Atari/Microsoft/Sega at large for how they impacted gaming -- not just their consoles but also other categories you find important in the gaming industry.

I was looking to know if there was a larger cultural reason like "it was the end theme of an anime" or something like that. I was very surprised to see it was their most played on Spotify by such a large margin.

This won't explain it fully in the way you're seeking, but the play VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE by the late Christopher Durang was a 2013 Tony-winner. That show at one point talks about how music used to be good, and then it ends with Here Comes The Sun.

I don't know a closer example beyond that, and I would predict Here Comes The Sun was already held in similar esteem before this play came out about a decade ago. Still!

I don't get all these votes for Here Comes the Sun.

It's a good song but one of the 4 best, most iconic Beatles songs of all time, really? Am I missing where its popularity is coming from?

(Beatles-topic closed while I was writing this)

Once upon a time, my mom was pregnant when she heard Here Comes The Sun with George Harrison singing on the radio...and now I'm named after one of the Beatles.

I flip-flop if Here Comes The Sun is a top-four song of theirs or not, but the song definitely has popularity and personal impacts for people. It's just a beautiful song that's unique in their library. If you feel like Mt. Rushmore should represent more than just Lennon and McCartney, Here Comes The Sun feels like a pretty easy next choice.

I resent how anticlimactic the ending was, to the point that it's soured me on returning to newer Phoenix Wright games. I tried with SoJ, and I just couldn't muster through its first two or maybe three cases. As a PW fan who played the original trilogy and skipped Apollo Justice, PW:DD is a relatively good game that committed the ultimate sin of a weak-ass ending.

I do like some of the other things going on in this case like the courtroom ruins -- man, what a moment that was -- so it's not all bad. I just don't forgive it.
