I've done this style of poll contest once before, back in either Gen VII or Gen VIII, so why not try it again now? The rules are simple: each day, I'm going to post a poll for a given Pokemon typing, with each generation's roster of new Pokemon filling in that typing. You just need to look at what each generation had to offer, and select which generation you think brought the best new roster (for any reason; you could say that a single Pokemon was so good that it overwhelms everything else the generation spawned, or you could select a generation that may be more well-rounded that the one that created your personal favorite). At the end of the day, one generation will be crowned a champion (with potential tiebreakers if need be), and that generation will advance to a second round, where the eighteen winners, and fourteen strongest runner-ups will be sorted into a 32-entrant tournament to crown which generation produced the best overall roster of a single typing.

The tournament has now begun. The discussion topic is here: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/80744044 and the bracket is here: https://www.bracketmaker.com/tlist.cfm?tid=478370

Today, we kick off the elite eight with a battle between our one-seed in Gen I Fire, and a somewhat surprising opponent in the lowest remaining seed of Gen VI Dragon. Once again, all of those Mega Evolutions may work in Dragon's favor (including a mega evolution of a Gen I Fire-type), but the one-seed has shown that it has what it takes to make it this far...can it keep the momentum going?

Rounding out the sweet sixteen, we had one spot left and two Gen V rosters vying to claim it. In the end, Gen V Bug proved that it earned its two-seed by blowing out Gen V Ghost for most of the day, up until the very end when a few votes came in to prevent a double-digit loss. Still, Gen V Bug advances by a score of 22-15.

Our final match of the sweet sixteen sees two Gen V rosters going head-to-head. Gen V Bug has had two impressive showings thus far, dominating its preliminary and going on to trounce Gen VIII Normal in round one. Meanwhile, Gen V Ghost has managed to eke out victories over Gen IX Ghost in the preliminary, and then Gen III Steel in round 1. But it's time to see if Gen V Bug is as strong as it seems, or if it's just had especially tough opposition to reach this point. Likewise, has Gen V Ghost faced the stronger field and come out on top to reach the sweet sixteen.

When it came down to two Flying-type rosters, there's a reason why one won its preliminary and the other was merely a wild card. In a comfortable match-up for Gen I Flying, it beat Gen VI Flying by a measure of 24-14 to secure Gen I's second spot in the elite eight.

This is the first (and possibly only, since Fire and Dragon have to make it through several matches to make it possible) time in this contest we're going to see a rematch of the preliminaries, as Flying-type's winner, Gen I, takes on its wild card in Gen VI. This will also determine when of Gen I or Gen VI has more than one entrant in the elite eight, because the final match of this round guarantees a second entrant for Gen V.

Man, when it comes to facing off against Water-types, Gen III Psychic likes keeping it close. I think this might be the first ACTUAL comeback of the tournament, as Gen I Water was leading most of the day until the very end, when Gen III Psychic pulled even and got that last vote to secure an 18-17 victory.

Last round, Gen I Water scored the biggest blowout of the contest thus far, quadrupling Gen VIII Poison (which is a shame, in my opinion). Meanwhile, Gen IV Psychic faced a Water-type once, going up against the overwhelming quantity of Water-types from its own generation, and in perhaps the closest match-up of round one, it barely scored a victory. The question now becomes: if Gen III Water stronger than its Gen I counterpart, or is Gen III Psychic looking down the barrel of another blowout?

And with Fire taking two spots in the elite eight, Dragon follows suit, as three-seeded Gen III Dragon wins over Gen IX Dark (fully eliminating Gen IX from the tournament, and officially sealing off the three latest generations entirely), with a score of 25-15.

Last round, we watched Gen III Dragon blow out one of Gen IX's two rosters to make the field in Fighting, and we've already seen Gen VI Dragon (which features a lot of Gen III mega evolutions) score a victory to reach the elite eight. So now, Gen IX Dark is the underdog, looking to carry on the legacy of the later generations, as it's the last roster standing from Gen VII onward.

I'm going to ask this as politely as possible: were you hated/excommunicated for a very standard level of not liking Shan...or was your reaction to Shan something similar to what we're seeing now?

Fire already has a win under its belt in round 2, but can the Fire wild card pick keep up the momentum? Meanwhile, Gen I Poison started out with the biggest blowout of the preliminaries (just not in terms of total votes, hence the fourth seed), yet Poison has yet to show proper strength against a true opponent. Will this be the match that Gen I Poison gets to show what it's made of, or will Gen V Fire prove it to be a paper champion?

Yesterday's match saw Gen III Grass once again score a victory, helping to knock Electric out of the tournament in back-to-back rounds. Despite tightening the match up going into the final hours, Gen V Electric couldn't overcome Gen III Grass's lead, and the end result was a 23-17 victory for the higher Leech Seed.

Electric just lost a match to Gen VI Dragon, but have no fear, because the wild card is still in contention to win, this time going up against a high-seeded Gen III Grass. Both of them beat a Ground-type roster to get here, so in a way, this will show which roster was the stronger opponent overall.

Gengar/Raikou (I don't care for Raikou, but I also don't care for Hattrem, and ultimately, Gengar outweighs Lairon for me)
Hippowdown/Scorbunny (I dislike Cloyster and think Fuecoco is a weaker starter. Meanwhile Hippowdon's pretty cool, and Scorbunny's great in terms of giving us something fast in the otherwise plodding Gen VIII roster.)
Suicune/Vileplume (Suicune is better than anything else today, but Nidoran and Deoxys both outweigh Vileplume. It's tough, but I genuinely like Suicune a lot, so Vileplume benefits)
Noctowl/Arctibax (Same as above. Noctowl is the best, Miltank/Ogerpon are better than Arctibax...but again, Noctowl outweighs Miltank/Ogerpon.)

Gen I won its first match of round two, but can it repeat two matches in a row (Gen V was the only generation to accomplish this in round one, despite Gen I having multiple opportunities to do so itself). Meanwhile, Gen VI looks to survive where Gen IV did not, as only four of the sweet sixteen come from outside Gens I, III and V.

Round one kicked off with a relatively uneventful victory for Gen I Fire, as it took a lead over Gen IV Fighting and never really seemed in danger of losing it (though the votals were low...perhaps because I didn't let the round run as long as I have been). The end result was a 20-13 victory though.

When Gen V makes something NEW, it's usually pretty good (elemental monkeys aside). It's the fact that Gen V has so many duplicates designed solely to replace stuff from previous generations...most of which are far inferior to the originals...which winds up biting the generation in the ass.
