The Knight

Knights do one thing first and foremost: Fight. Granted heavy passive bonuses when protecting other members of their team and usually very proficient in martial abilities, Knights are one of the pillars a Sburb party can lean on, covering the frailer members of the party while they do their job. They live to be the sword that cleaves evil, the shield that protects the innocent...no matter what the cost to themselves is. Brave and chivalrous, Knights are a mainstay of the game, and come in all shapes and sizes. From those who do not know how to fight, but are willing to do anything for their friends, to the stoic and cool bladesboys who carve their own path, the Knights all follow one creed: To Fight, and in fighting, Overcome. To Die so that others may Live, and in Dying, to be Reborn Again.

Class Bonus:

Scaling dice damage costs 2 base points less per fraction. Flat scaling damage costs 1 point less per fraction after the fourth. Certain Context actions may provide extra benefits. Knights like heavy strikes, as a rule.

The Jack:

Skilled in many trades, but a master of none. That is what defines the Jack, in a nutshell: players chosen to be Jacks are gifted with a variety of abilities from the get-go: a certain amount of power, tempered by control, and with the understanding of how it should be used, coupled with some martial skills and clues from the Medium on how to proceed. Unlike most other classes, their Fraymotifs are naturally acquired, and at a rapid speed, as the Jack climbs up the ranks of his echeladder with almost indecent haste...

...And soon hits a plateau. The Jack has access to all of the facets of his element, but only partially. He never grows to become the master of it, like the Heir, or the wielder of it, like the Knight. His crushing early advantage vanishes as his comrades ascend to the top of their Echeladders and earn their best weapons and Fraymotifs through blood and sweat, tears and effort. In the end, the Jack becomes the opposite of the Page: strong early on, but no more than a bystander forced to rely on his wits and creativity to survive in the later stages. Still, the Jack's aid can be invaluable, taking the weak Page and the powerless Seer through their rough starts, and while their powers are lesser, they are rather unique, particularly those of the Suited Jacks: indeed, the rare Jack of Heart(s) is immesurably valuable beyond brute strength, providing certain talents no one else has access to.

And of course, occasionally, the impossible happens. The Jack of All Trades...becomes Master Bar None.

Class Bonus:

Starts play with 140% of base Build Points, and 6 bonus Character Points. Gains a decreased amount of BP later on. A short term solution with long term issues.

Element 2: Blood

Like Heart, Blood is often given traits it does not actually possess. It is used as a symbol for familial bonds, and to create the most binding of accords. It represents violence, and courage, and joyous feelings, and war. Heroes of Blood are unbreakable. Their bodies may be torn to shreds, but they will rise again anyway. Their spirits may be broken, but they will piece themselves back together and rejoin the fray, their zeal redoubled. Their faith may waver, but something will renew their devotion to the cause. Nothing can keep a Hero of Blood down. Not the destruction of their planet, the whispers of the Horrorterrors, or the rise of the Archagent into an Archassassin. Nothing.

Element Bonus:

Lesser Bonds become available. Lesser Braveskills become available. In some case, Greater Bonds and Braveskills become available.

A) Is it possible to return to my body?

Umbraria considers the question for a moment. She looks at you as if appraising some hidden characteristic before replying.

"Returning to your previous body would be a difficult affair, at best. Your body was mortally wounded. If you went back to it you'd just end up here again a little later. Reuniting soul with body requires powerful healing magics, and a good grasp of resurrection techniques-"

"The sort of expertise I can provide." A sinister voice booms. Umbraria rolls her eyes and frown, as smoke billows on the far side of the room.

"You just can't resist butting in, can you? How did you ever find the way in here?" She asks.

"My methods are unimportant, Lady Umbraria. All that matters is the results." The smoke coalesces into a colossal figure made of the stuff of nightmares. With jet black skin, glowing red eyes, and large, bleached white horns, its malevolent grin sending shivers down your spine. Next to you, you feel Nina tense up as she gulps at the sight of the demon.

"Welcome to the domain of the dead, mortal. I have been waiting for you." It bellows, growling like an animal that has just sated its hunger.

"Pardés." Umbraria says, her tone curt and icy. "Say your piece and get out. This ballroom isn't a place for you to show off."

"Very well, Lady." Pardés says, nodding. "Listen well, mortal. You desire a new life, and I can grant you that. All I ask of you is a favor, at a future time, and nothing else. I wish to deal with you in good faith, and honor my word if you honor yours. If your desire is to make a deal with me, simply call out my name and I shall arrive. I look forward to seeing you again."

"Alright, that's enough. Off with you!" With another puff of smoke, the gigantic demon disappears, leaving you, Nina, and Umbraria alone again.

"Pardés of the Wild Garden. A powerful archdevil...and regrettably, one of the beings skilled enough to resurrect you. There are others out there with those powers, however, and not quite as malevolent...though most aren't as honorable, either." Umbraria leans back on her chair, sulkily. "That idiot is so condescending. Pisses me the hell off."

41) In the wake of the demon's disappearance, a fragile silence falls upon the room.
A) Free Choice.

I didn't say you were wrong for maxing W first, I said you were overrating the importance of maxing W first. Especially since you're working under the assumption that every champion is a combo fiend like Garen.

Anyway, it would appear that the name of the game with Riven is stacking AD and armor pen.

Name one bruiser who isn't. Riven goes top, after all. Xin combos, Jarvan combos, Renekton combos, Garen combos, Rumble combos, Morde combo'd...like, I honestly don't know if a single bruiser doesn't unload on people like that. It's what they do.

I think you're vastly overrating W, as you tend to do with things you like, but whatever.

Math time:

Q: Scales to 330 damage, has a 13 second CD.

W: Scales down to 7 seconds of CD, has 210 damage.

Damage over time: Over 13 seconds, Q puts out 660 damage, W 420. Fair enough, but add a second and W is up again, taking its damage to 630 (the Damage Per Second of each ability favors W too). The lead shrinks - and with CDR it shrinks even faster, which you will have.

As you can see Bio, Q's damage lead is basically meaningless. Sure, it pumps out more damage per cast, whatever. W is more usable, though. This makes it better because it means you damage more, disable more, and do so to multiple targets to boot. The longer a fight lasts the better it gets. In laning this makes it infinitely better because you're gonna have minutes and minutes of jockeying for control of the lane. Not to mention the excellent control it provides with R active because that's just unfair. What are you going to max when facing Irelia: the ability that opens you up to an easy combo starting with Equstrike, or the one that is that much trickier to stop because whoops, the other dude can't move? You don't have the stats to stay in a fight until Q is back up - you have to get some damage and get out, FAST. In the time it takes you to get Q's combo in full Garen, Xin Zhao, et al have raped you. You're too dazzled by the shiny numbers to understand the importance of usability. To put it another way, I'm just gonna quote Eric Clapton: "Before you accuse me, take a look at yourself".

QWWEWRWQW.

Why W over Q? Q does more damage and the stun doesn't increase with level.

Three words, or rather five acronym'd to three:

AoE. Bear. Stun.

With a brut, you get an area stun every 5.5 seconds. With a ghostblade and boots, you get the stun every 4.5 seconds. Those two and a Spirit Visage and every four seconds, you're telling the enemy "no dawg, you don't get to do ****", priceless on a bruiser.

Basically, anyone who tells you to max Q first is a lunatic. First, it doesn't burst. Second, it doesn't have a lowering CD that breaks channels and holds in place. Third, it's only vaguely AoE. Fourth? It doesn't farm as well. Fifth? It doesn't raise your threat, making the enemy futilely try to kill you. Early on, you can't toe-to-toe other bruisers. You go in with Q, W, and get the hell out with an E and two more Qs. You don't try to fight until victory is assured. Get the damage you can depend on, not the damage you can maybe get.

Next, the first two classes...and the first element!

The Page

Least is first, and the Page is certainly the one among all Heroes who fits that denomination best. Pages are granted very weak powers by Skaia, and occasionally, none at all. They rely on their pluckiness, wits, Specibuskills, and determination to survive. Usually, their true powers never materialize...but occasionally...

...A Page Rises. Even taking the God Tiers out of the equation, the Page is potentially one of the most powerful Heroes. What the Heir receives naturally, the Page must strive for: later on, their early weakness is abundantly compensated by their awesome, world-spanning powers, even before Rising. Afterwards, their only equal is the Leaders: no one else can stand in the way of a Page who has obtained the Inheritance, but tempered by the Experience to know how to use it.

Class Bonus:

Starts play with 40 max HP and 60% of everyone else's Build Points. Gains increased BP later on. Suffer in the Earth but enjoy paradise in heaven, as it goes.

The Heir:

The most powerful of all the Heroes, Heirs embody their Elements to the fullest: whereas others lack Control, or Power, or Understanding, or Authority, the Heir has it all, and more. They're natural leaders and commanders, and equipped with mighty Fraymotifs to enforce their will. A God Tier Heir is a sight to behold: terrifying and awesome, beautiful and inconceivable, their incredible powers define what the God TIers truly mean.

Class Bonus:

All Perks have a 25% discount. It's good to be the kin-err, Heir.

Element 1: Heart

The Heart is arguably the most romanticized part of our anatomy, and for good reason. It keeps the whole of your body moving, even our brains. Without the heart regulating the flow of blood and the sweet, precious oxygen, we are nothing. It is also a striking metaphor for emotions, embodying searing passions, sorrowful sadness, and vicious self-loathing.

The Element of Heart is this, and much more. Is is the blood pumping through your veins. It is the knowledge of what to say to make someone's faith in the universe begin anew. It is the absolute peace and harmony of an individual determined to make it through on his or her terms. The Heroes of Space and Time are required by Skaia's rules, but the Heroes of Heart are required by the rules of humanity (and trollkind). How can a team stick together without a heart, after all?

Element Bonus:

Lesser Dominations become available. Lesser Manipulations become available. In some cases, Greater Manipulations become available.

Also, just for the record, allow me to remind everyone that Hakumen does NOT have access to any gameplay mechanics. His own moves are OK for the most part, even the Astral Heat, but he can't Faultless Defense or Burst. Just in case anyone's unsure about it.

The Rules:

-Matches will last exactly 24 hours. Votes after that much time has elapsed will not be counted, even if a new topic hasn't gone up yet.
-This is a contest to determine which character is the most *powerful*. Vote only for the character you think would win in a fight, not the one who's funnier, cooler, or sexier. If you don't do that I can't count your vote.
-BOLD YOUR VOTE. Unbolded votes will NOT be counted.
-Rallying is allowed. Alts are not.
-Fights will take place in a neutral terrain. This does not necessarily mean a *featureless* terrain: assume that both characters will have a chance to use all of their skills to the fullest here, barring setting-specific abilities and anything that requires the presence of multiple enemies (but see below).
-Characters start the fight alone. They don't bring allies with them, like Kerrigan and the Zerg Swarm for instance. Summons are allowed though, provided they're brought once combat has started.
-Fighters retain their usual personalities. They won't fight to kill unless that's their MO, and won't spam their best attacks to win unless, again, that's how they act in their original media.
-You don't have to justify your vote, but it helps. If you feel like you can add something to the debate, go right ahead!
-Seriously, BOLD THE VOTE. So important it bears repeating.
-Bracket Link, for viewing past results and future matches:
http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?&tid=408528&tclass=

Past Results:

After a rough start, Yusuke Urameshi persevered and defeated Minato Namikaze in a low-scoring slugfest. He will face Luke Skywalker in Round 2! Votals: 9-5.

(1) Jack Rakan
external image
From Mahou Sensei Negima, Jack Rakan is a laid-back yet powerful fighter. One of the few capable of taking on the legendary mage Nagi Springfield on equal footing, Rakan is a skilled hand-to-hand fighter with excellent physical durability and magical resistance, able to react to lightning-fast movements with years of experience; he is able to reverse the tide of battle while being pummeled simply by studying his opponent's attack. He can activate a defensive aura of magic that increases his durability, speed, and power; he can also dispel the defenses of a magical barrier with his hand.

Rakan's skill “The Man with a Thousand Faces” can create numerous bladed weapons that Rakan can instantly change on a whim, including a building-sized sword and numerous small blades; he can also charge energy into the weapons, use the weapons to parry attacks, and copy any type of weapon he wants. His Warship Breaker move charges up a building-sized sword with energy and hurls it at a target at hypersonic speeds. Rakan can also use his Hypersonic Halberd technique to create an explosion of roughly 300m. He can also exorcise spirits by attacking the soul directly.

(8) Hakumen
external image
From Blazblue, Hakumen is one of the legendary Six Heroes who sealed the Black Beast, a powerful monster. Armed with the sword Ookami, which can kill immortals and stop regeneration, and clad in the Susano'o Unit, which gives him nearly limitless stamina and power, he is a terror on the battlefield, recognized as being far above most of his allies and enemies even while operating at a fraction of his full power.

Hakumen's specialty is counterattacking: he is equipped with a large array of techniques that enable him to take an enemy's blows and projectiles and reflect them back at him, or nullify them outright. Particularly notable among these is the Fumajin, which uses projectiles launched by an enemy to create an energy concentration, which stops all other attacks that pass through it and damages those who come into contact with it.

Thing I hate about CC: why does a story about time travel have Dragons with all the powers? Dragon fetish sucks unless it's used in a medieval setting.

And yes I know what the Dragons are, it's just if they aren't dragons why call them that? Even DQ games rarely centers the entire mythology of the world on the Dragons.

Because they're an anti-time travel mechanism. It makes perfect sense. You said it yourself, dragons = medieval. Time travel = futuristic. Each of them pulls in a different direction and the plot acknowledges it!

Chrono Cross would be awesome if there were just 8 playable characters and the battle system was just lifted from Chrono Trigger. Serge (Lynx), Kid (Harle), Glenn (Sprigg), Norris, Karsh, Riddell, Fargo, and... I dunno Grobyc. Or Radius. Also we're just going to forget the whole Guile/Magus thing ever happened.

collidopinions

Make that 16 characters and we have a deal. We need Nikki, Pierre, Radius, Grobyc, Leena, Pip, and maybe Viper so that you have more than one choice of yellows. Don't think most of these are too debatable - maybe there's an abundance of blues, but all of them have nice reasons to be there!

While I must grant you that's somewhat impressive, I'm pretty sure there is no way you could write that that WOULDN'T be incoherent for me, lol. I don't know, don't you think that's a bit... complicated? Which was the point I wanted to make anyway.

I'll agree that the general timeline of plot events in CC is easy to follow, that is travelling to Fort Dragonia, switching with Lynx, the Dead Sea and so on. Project Kid just baffles me though, even when it's written down for me.

Fully agreed. I won't deny Project Kid is a total mess - I just don't think it particularly detracts from CC because it's the details that are horribly convoluted and they don't particularly impact the plot. The basic gist of it can be summed up in like eight bullet points and it's what is important to the main plot. It's a bit like trying to work out the timeline of Mass Effect using the background materials, sorta: it adds up, but it's complicated enough that it really isn't worth the effort and it's just more fun to go through the actual story instead.

It's a bit aimless at the start because Serge doesn't yet have a purpose, but from saving Kid onwards, it has a pretty clear plot!

You're on goofballs. Go on and explain "Project Kid" to me without consulting the Chrono Wiki, I dare you!

You're tergiversing my words because I'm talking about how Serge goes to Fort Dragonia to fight Lynx, fights for a chance to get his body back, learns about the Time Crash, ventures into the Sea of Eden, etc. etc. etc, but sure. Balthasar wants to free Schala, so he engineers the project, which is more or less a colossal experiment that plays god to pull her out of the Darkness Beyond Time. The Chronopolis is established, and the Counter-Time Experiment is a colossal bomb. Lots of screwy time and dimension traveling ensues, which results in Dinopolis being pulled in from a doomed timeline (by the planet IIRC, through the dragons) to start a sort of cold war with Chronopolis, trying to prevent more time-****ery, while the people of Chronopolis go on to found the El Nido settlement. Meanwhile, Kid is found by Lucca and raised by her. This lasts until Lynx, who is Serge's father transformed by the supercomputer FATE (which happened due to Schala's unwitting intervention by creating a magnetic storm and redirecting Serge, Wazuki and Miguel to Chronopolis), arrives and burns the orphanage down, accompanied by Harle, the anthropomorphized Seventh Dragon (whose purpose is hazy to me too, admittedly). Lynx had previously tried to drown Serge, four years after the night when they washed up on the Chronopolis, but had been stopped by a time traveling Kid (probably using the Neo Epoch), creating the dimensional split. The adventure follows. Using the Chrono Cross, Serge finally liberates Schala and destroys the Time Devourer, destroying the final remnant of Lavos. That's about it.

PS: By the way, sorry if it looks a bit incoherent. I wrote this down in the order I recalled the bits and pieces. I can reformat that for coherence if you like.

You people aren't seriously going to argue that Irvine, Quistis and Selphie were well developed are you? Half the playable cast is just along for the ride. Zell isn't that well developed either, but I'm giving him a pass since he's just that damn likable.

Quistis I'll grant you, as she goes totally out of focus. Selphie is iffy, too, since I'm not quite sure how her bloodthirsty side emerged is ever explored, though she does have some nice side scenes that touch upon her personality. Irvine is totally fleshed out nicely, though. He's not a huge character in his game, but for his role he has a lot of depth. He has a motivation, flaws, interactions with everybody else, multiple traits that get exposure, etc. etc. etc. I'd argue he's even more developed than Zell even. Whether you like him or not is up to you but he's certainly developed enough.

Obviously the focus is on Squall and Laguna to a lesser extent, but not every character needs six hours of focus to let you know what he or she's all about.

never said they needed more screen time, in fact in this topic I've praised much more minimalist games quite a bit, more isn't always better.

Then again you're also saying CC has basically no plot, which is pretty much "huh" to me. It's a bit aimless at the start because Serge doesn't yet have a purpose, but from saving Kid onwards, it has a pretty clear plot!

FFVIII's characters and character interaction were great.

Some of the best chemistry between party members in the series, really.

This. Even Selphie, who's usually considered the worst party member, has some interesting facets to her. FF8 is a game that really, really rewards going deeper into the characters than you would just by following the main plot.

FFVIII's characters and dialogue are terrible, not that square's dialogue was ever the best but it really comes out in a game like that which has the worst cast of any of the psx FFs

Man, what are you on. FF8 has a ton of good lines! And the characters are pretty good too. Obviously the focus is on Squall and Laguna to a lesser extent, but not every character needs six hours of focus to let you know what he or she's all about.

I like how ridiculous FFVIII is - it's like a Grant Morrison comic

SPOILERS ( I guess)

ok, first you're students at a military academy BAM you're fighting a dinosaur in your garden BAM you're sent to assassinate a sorceress BAM you're having a flashback to someone else's past BAM you're fighting a giant blob beneath your school BAM YOU'RE TRAPPED ON A SPACESHIP WITH ALIENS BAM YOU'RE LOST IN TIME

the plot is is so over the top and I love it... it's the characters themselves and the dialogue that are the real problems with FFVIII's story

Bad opinion on CC, bad opinion on FF8 (its characters and dialogue, at least. I can actually agree to the Grant Morrison comparison). I mean, you think setting up a double tech is hard. I just have to shake my head at that.

Have you played Chrono Cross?

No, and that shouldn't matter. While it's true that many of my favorite songs are favorites because they come from favorite games, I've discovered far more new songs just by listening to B8 and YouTube playlists.

You should do it. It's really hard to explain with words, but there's something very special about its intro. Scars plays during it, but you can't get that feel just from watching it on Youtube or listening to the song. I don't know how to explain it, really; You're not playing, just watching, and yet Youtube doesn't really do it justice.

You know, it's kinda funny, but I think the best Contra games are the ones that heavily deviated from the formula. Not to deny that Contra 4 is good, but to me it doesn't hold a candle to Hard Corps and Uprising. The way they made boss rushes the focus of the game gave them a very new spin, and they executed the whole tension spike/release thing magnificently, given their dependency on hitting constant highs of excitement with the bosses. If I had to rank the games I'd probably put those two above Contra. They just have so much more replay value than the others, too!

Also, I just realized something.

Vlad's Q is considered a single target spell now.

Was it always considered single target for spell vamp items?

Because if not...

Oh baby.

I know he's done awesomely with Trist and Ez, but those are the only games I saw. I'm sure he's done well with others, though.
Yeah, basically, neither of those plays like Ashe. Not trying to be critical, but I mean it: Ashe is an abortion in Dominion because she's terrible at 1v1ing an opponent that moves at Singed Speed, has Mundo-style health regen, and a slowing aura. Like sure, if you work very hard she can work, but ask Chris how many battles he wins 1v1 against an Irelia or Xin that hasn't been shut down. I'm betting he'll tell you something like what I've said: That ashe jobs at skirmishes without a peeler.

Uh... what makes the other AD ranged carries better at 1v1ing fast or tanky enemies? They all go down easily enough to anything with more DPS than Shen.

It sounds like the stealth rework will make Evelynn terrifying on this map, she's already got the BoM as her gimmick.

Trist: "trololo bustershot"

Ezreal: "trololo kitehax + tele"

MF: "trololo speedboost, slow, good stats, ult for softening"

Kog: "trololo ooze + facemelting"

Corki: "trololo valkyrie"

Vayne: "trololo invisibility and wallpins"

Need I go on further? I think I forgot twitch or something.

Dominion also has 2v2s and 3v3s though.

Yes, but in that case you're now dealing with a Xin AND Irelia with just Leona/Alistar/Whoever to save you. Still a bad situation. 3v3 it becomes iffier - you can probably win a fight there - but I'd still want any other carry except Cait over Ashe.
