Getting sovereign to fire its weapons on itself.

That was more just brute-forcing Sovereign's circuits actually. Not mind control, but rather "I'm manipulating these turrets now, try and wrest control away from me". Physical manipulation.

I think you're overreacting heavily.

Because Riot has never nerfed a champion into uselessness and left them that way for months. On an unrelated note, Shen is an excellent tank and Evelynn is completely viable.

Shen is viable still though not great, and Evelynn was intentionally ruined. Bad examples. Urgot + Sivir could maybe work.

To put it into more perspective. Mass Effect fields allow sovereign not only to travel at unmatched speeds while in space, but also to maintain hull integrity while on land. High gravity which would crush someone has virtually no effect on him.

Also, I've seen the argument that Luke could simply force his way into getting Sovereign to kill itself. I'm not buying it, sovereign is extremely intelligent and himself uses a form of brainwashing all the time.

...Who used that argument? I think the argument is that Luke could force his way into Sovereign, kill his crew, and the Sovereign might try to call the Avatar up, which would end poorly for him. Nothing more than that (and my remark that I would not bet on Luke jobbing to Sovereigns indoctrination in this battle)

When does he ever fool around? His MO has been to show up, leave when he gets what he wants, ram through anything in the way, shut out all the useless fluff if he can and start blasting things if he can't. Sovereign was thankfully dead before Mass Effect 2 tried to utterly derail the Reapers by making Harbinger obsessed with Shepard and unconcerned with anything else, his actual actions show he goes for his goal without deviating at all, and opens fire when there's enemies around him even though they posed relatively little threat at the time.

Whoops, true that. I confused them, sorry. Would you say it's fair to say that Sovereign is arrogant, though? From the conversation on Virmire (IIRC you see the big red head there first) I got an air of utmost condescension out of him. Very much efficient and not interested in fancy displays, but rather achieving his objectives.

Again the ME field shenanigans could be interesting.

Who knows perhaps the ME wave could mess with Luke's force moves.

Are ME fields inherent to everything? If the answer is negative, the scale is different. It could be possible, but it'd be more grasping at straws than "OK, these two things contradict each other directly, which one comes out on top?".

Also, the personality argument is very interesting. Luke isn't bloodthirsty, but he knows how to get things done. Sovereign does, in fact, think of himself as being far superior to organics. Fooling around sorta makes sense, at least until Luke flips the hell out and starts chucking him around or blasting him with his own weaponry.

Husks are laughably pathetic for Luke. He literally just has to look at them and boom, Destroy Droid poofs them. You can try to argue "setting specific", but it works with electronics in general so that doesn't save them.

So yeah, going Luke. The only point of contention, to me, is the kinetic shields. People who think Sovereign is firing his guns on anything but itself forget that his opponent is precognitive, speedy, and can **** with technology to kaboom it or do his bidding. It'd be one thing if Luke were trying to delete Sovereign's consciousness, but this is more like Mind Tricking a stormtrooper or ten.

That's the problem I'm seeing. Luke has to get *in* to Sovereign, then go find and kill Saren, and then kill him again, and then generate an attack at least as big as the Alliance Fleet and the Normandy combined had to put Sovereign down. Without dying during any of this

Killing Saren is sort of just the win condition we know about. It's very likely that Luke could just rip the Sovereign to shreds from the inside and that'd do the trick, the Sovereign Avatar merely works as a way to KO the Sovereign briefly so he can set up something.

PS: Note that I am stating that it's likely that mass destruction would kill the Sovereign, not that said mass destruction is very likely to happen.

Wow. Can this match be any more relevant to my interests, I wonder?

EU Luke

Oh nevermind, the only post-ROTJ novels I've read are the Thrawn Trilogy and the tidbits I've heard from the books thereafter hasn't exactly intrigued me.

New Jedi Order is all worth it IMO. You should give it a read, plus it's where most of Luke's super hax showings come from, like the Green Lightning.

From: Panthera | #027
Reaper technology has shown to be pretty hard to **** with though, since no one can really figure it out beyond what they wanted to be learned, EDI can manage to deal with their second hand stuff but s/he/it was designed based on stuff recovered from the wreckage of Sovereign anyway, so Reaper tech is definitely going to be pretty resistant to being shut down (hell, it can remain active even after millions of years of floating around with the bulk of itself more or less destroyed). Plus Luke trying to deal with Sovereign through the Force is probably going to be bringing himself in touch with the indoctrination field as well, which isn't an easy thing to deal with.

Luke could really care less about the Indoctrination Field. If there's one area where I'd straight-up take him over the Sovereign, it's in a battle of minds. He's in incredible control of himself, and no matter how long you see this fight lasting I doubt he'll be affected much by it. I'm really curious about Sovereign's shields. How well do they hold to persistent stress, AKA being drilled through the ground for instance? What about shortcircuiting some of the Sovereign's systems?

And since someone asked about size...

Based on descriptions of the Star Dreadnought Executor, the Imperial Star Destroyer/Star Cruiser cut-off point lay somewhere around a length of 3.8 kilometers

Starkiller, who's a wimp compared to Luke, pulled one of these down. It's a fair guess that Luke can chuck Sovereign around. The question is if that will HURT it.

I'm thinking that until such time as anyone can show how Luke might not die as soon as he gets shot at,

Sovereign

gets my vote

Luke can shut down Sovereign's weaponry though. One of the classic Jedi powers is ****ing with tech. What I'm more interested in is if he can punch through the kinetic shields or will have to improvise, and if he can take on the whole crew and the Sovereign Avatar after making his waty in.

The Rules:

-Matches will last exactly 24 hours. Votes after that much time has elapsed will not be counted, even if a new topic hasn't gone up yet.
-This is a contest to determine which character is the most *powerful*. Vote only for the character you think would win in a fight, not the one who's funnier, cooler, or sexier. If you don't do that I can't count your vote.
-BOLD YOUR VOTE. Unbolded votes will NOT be counted.
-Rallying is allowed. Alts are not.
-Fights will take place in a neutral terrain. This does not necessarily mean a *featureless* terrain: assume that both characters will have a chance to use all of their skills to the fullest here, barring setting-specific abilities and anything that requires the presence of multiple enemies (but see below).
-Characters start the fight alone. They don't bring allies with them, like Kerrigan and the Zerg Swarm for instance. Summons are allowed though, provided they're brought once combat has started.
-Fighters retain their usual personalities. They won't fight to kill unless that's their MO, and won't spam their best attacks to win unless, again, that's how they act in their original media.
-You don't have to justify your vote, but it helps. If you feel like you can add something to the debate, go right ahead!
-Seriously, BOLD THE VOTE. So important it bears repeating.
-Bracket Link, for viewing past results and future matches:
http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?&tid=408528&tclass=

Past Results:

Lord Foul's powerful magic spells and deceitful ways were superior to Alex Mercer's biomass-fueled abilities, allowing the Despiser to achieve an easy victory of 12-2.

(3) Sovereign
external image
From Mass Effect, the Sovereign is a massive dreadnaught ship, sapient and capable of mass destruction. Also known as Nazara, it is equipped with immensely powerful Mass Effect fields, strong enough to enable it to land on a planet without difficulty. The Sovereign is equipped with durable kinetic shields, capable of withstanding extremely heavy fire from other ships without suffering so much as a scratch. It is armed with a potent main gun mounted along its spine, capable of destroying dreadnaughts with a single shot, as well as other, lesser weapons. Its two-kilometer long body is crewed by Indoctrinated sapients, which are little more than a shell of their former selves. Notable among them is Saren Arterius, the rogue Spectre, a skilled warrior and biotic who has also been reprogrammed by Sovereign to be fanatically loyal to him. Should Saren die, the Sovereign is capable of reanimating him through his extensive cybernetic implants, using his corpse as a powerful host body.

(6) Luke Skywalker
external image
From Star Wars, Luke Skywalker is one of the most powerful Jedi Knights of all time. Able to tap into the Force, the life energy that permeates all things, Luke exhibits this connection through telepathic and telekinetic abilities. He fights with a lightsaber, an energy-based weapon that can instantly cut through most objects, in addition to both his natural and trained Force abilities.

Luke can use Force Sense to judge positions of objects and future movements of people; his Telekinesis has been so strong as to fight the pull of a miniature black hole and crush spaceships, as well as teleport objects around; his use of Force Defend was once described as rooting him in the center of the Force itself, becoming the essence of the immovable object; and his skill with a lightsaber allowed him to cut through countless warriors as well as Yuuzhan Vong Slayers, beings bred and trained solely to kill Jedi. His signature Electric Judgment move consists of green sparks that can disable or kill opponents instantly.

I'm not sure how I feel about Sovereign's write up implying having Saren at his side. The whole point of Saren was that he *wasn't* indoctrinated too deeply because doing so would make him less useful, so it really seems like he should be seen as a separate entity that is therefore not involved.

Pre-Virmire Saren, absolutely. Post-Virmire Saren is 99% committed to the cause. I don't see what difference it makes though, unless you think removing a weakpoint from Sovereign should be done.

Peaf, giving him an extra second of 35% speed was really dumb. Shortening the cooldown of a move that gives 220 AD for free was even dumber, especially since it scales.

EDIT: Making his W a true one-point wonder because it scales to full from a rank also hurt. Garen gets really beefy really fast now.

Oh, speaking of RIOT being on the ball:

"3. Cleaner Skill Button UI - with room for expansion if possible for more skills - or trigger buttons, etc."

Words of Xypherous, Riven's designer. Dude needs to just design every champion tbh, he made Renekton too and rocks hard.

What is IP again?
IP is the other kind of points you earn when you play matches. You earn both XP and IP and IP are the points that you use to purchase runes and champions. Yes, that’s right, you have to "buy" the champions, but you get the points for free so its not a bad deal. (You can also spend real money on champion packs if you would rather not take the time to earn them) The point is that you get the IP for free so you should figure out which champions you are good with and spend it on those. When you buy a champion you will have it unlocked on your account forever. And if you don't buy ANY champions, you will still have access to 10 of them. Every week there are 10 "free" champions. But they are only free for the week and 10 different champions will be free the next week. And so if you are level 1 you still have 10 champions available to you and so try them out, figure out which one you might like to spend points on and then buy it.

And so IP is good for Champions and Runes. You can also spend *real money* to unlock champions but you can NOT unlock runes with real money, only IP and so runes have to be earned.

To sum up:
You have an account that goes up to level 30 (this is your summoner level)
You earn XP (to level up the account) and IP (to buy champions/runes) every time you play a match
You have rune pages (with up to 30 slots)
You have a mastery page to spec (with up to 30 points) (and you can respec as much as you want)

This is probably a bit over-kill and so if something doesn’t quite make sense just ask and someone will clarify. And if you are going to start playing please post:
(1) Your GameFAQs name
(2) Your Summoner name (this is different than your log-in name)
(3) Your preferred champions. It’s just nice to know which champions people prefer to play or use the most.

And please BOLD THE INFORMATION so we will see it and update the list accordingly.

What is League of Legends?
League of Legends is a team game very similar to the WarCraft 3 custom map DotA. There are two bases, one on either side of the map and several "lanes" between the bases along which AI controlled units spawn. An overhead view of the 5v5 map looks about like this:
external image

There is a base in the bottom left, and a base in the top right. 3 lanes connect the two bases and every 30 seconds AI controlled "minions" spawn in each lane. Everyone who is in the game controls 1 "champion" unit and your job as a team is to push your lanes and destroy the opposing base. The lanes are protected by turrets and so you need your own minions along side you to be able to kill the turrets without getting targeted by them. 2 bases, 3 lanes, 5 players per team.

What are Champions?
Champions are the powerful units that you get to control. You pick 1 before the map loads and that is the champion you will use for that match. Champions start each match at level 1 their max level is 18. The important thing to consider is the stats of the champion you select will be affected by the level of your account.

What do 'account-levels' have to do with anything?
When you create an account you have a level 1 account. That is called your 'Summoner Level'. You are the summoner, and the champion you select for the match is the 'summoned'. You increase your summoner level by playing matches. Every match you play will earn you XP and IP. Earning enough XP will increase your summoner level with the max level being 30. Wins are worth more XP/IP than losses, so try to win. Your summoner level also determines:
(1) How many runes you can slot and
(2) How many mastery points you can allot

If you are low leveled still and playing by yourself then the game will try and pair you against similarly leveled opponents, but if you are playing with higher leveled friends then it will seek higher leveled opponents. Just something to consider when you start learning how to play.

How good is Akali? And does she need any runes to function other than AP reds?

Don't play her without Westrice's runes. Melt faces with them if you're good enough.
