I'm not sure if companies can just write off executive compensation as "operating costs" but it wouldn't surprise me if there is some shitty thing they can do in order to do that. It also wouldn't surprise me if a lot of the "research and development" budget was just personnel costs. Big companies have found all sorts of shitty ways to dodge taxes and cook their books in order to look less profitable (and thus less taxable) than they actually are.
Looks like it: https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/DASH/financials/
and yeah, the US tax code counts software development costs as R&D so that would include personnel.

SSj4Wingzero posted...
The companies are essentially engaging in rent-seeking behavior - they're finding a way to profit off of something that they have very little actual role in.
Absolutely. With gig work and endless subscriptions, the GDP is counting more and more things that don't actually produce value, just rent-seeking making things more expensive. That's not even counting the price gouging on regular products that economists are touting as a sign of a great economy because consumer spending is higher.

Door Dash doesn't make money
DoorDash absolutely makes money. How could they not when all they do is provide an app? They don't have to maintain a vehicle fleet or even a large workforce, that's all provided by the "contractors". They suck up a huge portion of the prices that the customers pay. The reason why they don't show a profit on paper is because they pay ridiculously high compensation for their executives. They also allocate lot of money for research and development to find ways to increase their margin and because R&D gets beneficial tax treatment.

The "gig economy" is just techno-feudalism and it skews the unemployment numbers low because technically gig workers are working, even if they're earning less than minimum wage, don't enjoy standard worker protections, and have to bear the costs of vehicle maintenance, insurance, fuel, etc. It's one reason why the rosy economic numbers don't agree with the economic realities of workers. It's been an issue since the great recession of 2007-2009.

That's still an audio format, it's described differently than a waveform, but it still describes audio.

It's all software emulation of a MIDI device at this point on all platforms, as far as I know. It's too bad iPhones don't have one built-in, it's still a useful format and it's still getting updates (MIDI 2.0).

The reality we're dealing with is the US sending billions of dollars in weapons to israel in aid of genocide against international and even US law: https://www.amnestyusa.org/press-releases/u-s-made-weapons-used-by-government-of-israel-in-violation-of-international-law-and-u-s-law/

I'd love to hear how democrats reined in netanyahu. Was it when half of democrats in congress welcomed him with wide open arms? No one is saying trump isn't worse. I'm wondering why you think trump being worse makes it okay for democrats to still support netanyahu's campaign of genocide. If democrats were serious in their efforts against genocide, then it'd make sense for them to allow an anti-genocide protestor to speak at the DNC, but they won't do even that.

Brush, there is no scenario in which the US can force Israel to stop short of military force. Plain and simple. This isn't the 1980s, Netanyahu isn't Menachem Begin and what happened in Lebanon is not equivalent to the unhinged mania October 7 inflicted on Israeli society, let alone how the moment this war ends, Netanyahu is facing a permanent removal from power.

Like it or not, Palestinian lives are 100 percent a reason to vote Harris when Trump's actual stated views include mass ethnic cleansing, mass deportation of Palestinians in the US and "setting the Palestinian movement back decades.

it's a bad situation, but it's the one we have right now. There is no circumstance where a phone call stops it and cutting off support cuts off leverage.
So you think that makes it okay to send billions in aid to israel? If israel doesn't need those billions then we can stop wasting our money on that genocidal apartheid ethnostate. Stop using trump as an excuse for genocide. Support for genocide can never be excused. Netanyahu is not facing removal from power as long as this campaign of genocide continues and so far democrats have done everything they can to help him continue it.

People with undocumented immigrants in their immediate family are probably terrified of the election and might respond emotionally to the protests.

I trust the numbers that made rounds on social media that up to 200k can die (as a forward estimate) even if the war stops now. Those are devastating figures.
The key difference is that the US is actually doing something about Russia's invasion and continues to do so. In fact, a number of speakers at the DNC have highlighted how strong the US's commitment is to this cause and contrasted it with Trump's stance. That's great, however, these protestors who want to speak up for Palestine aren't even allowed a word on stage about the genocide happening in Palestine that the US is actively aiding in. The best they get is being told off with "Trump would probably be worse". Can you imagine if we let Ukraine fall and then shrugged our shoulders and said "Trump would aid Russia even harder"?

my mother in law is close to her 80s now. She tells us that she bought a refrigerator in the 70s. She is STILL using that same refrigerator.

And no, she didn't just dust it off last week from the garage and plug it in after 30 years. It has been in continuous operation since she bought it.
My microwave was built in the 80s and is still going strong. Made in Japan.

the timing of when people were calling for biden to drop is also important here

After the debate it was a common opinion that he fucked up. People were wanting him to drop before that even.
That's because the debate merely put on display what was already apparent to people paying attention.

According to official numbers, cumulative inflation since 2020 is 22%. This is yet another example that far exceeds that.

No one knew how quickly Kamala would unanimously get the Democratic nomination after Biden withdrew (Maybe some insiders like Pelosi had an idea about her but the general public didn't)

45 supporters were gloating and it looked like there was going to be some hastily thrown together primary at the DNC. It looked bleak
The democratic party emphasizes party unity above almost anything else, so them settling on a candidate this quickly shouldn't have come as much of a surprise. It's true that it could've been screwed up and democrats often are great at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, but coalescing around a single candidate is usually something they excel at. They previously did it for Biden, after all.

The problem was never Biden stepping down, it was okay what next

Most people who were heavy on the BIDEN MUST STEP DOWN train did not have that answer, and i could rarely get them to even propose one. If him stepping down went literally any other way than the literal perfect realignment under harris, this election was over

I was wrong that harris would be unpopular if picked, but very very few legitimately believed she would be the answer
Staying with Biden would've been a slow march towards doom. It was worth taking a chance on this because the potential upside was far greater than the potential downside.

Captain Hindsight looking like a genius over here
It's not hindsight. I kept warning about Biden and talking about how he wasn't a good candidate and the diehard democrats here would respond with calling me a Russian troll and Trump supporter. Now that Biden is gone and the better candidate Harris is in, I'm happy and haven't switched to attacking her like a troll would. They were wrong about Biden and they were wrong about me, but I know I won't get any apologies from them.
