4th is harder. those 3 though, they're each arguable GOAT and influenced multiple generations as well as countless comedians. tentatively, and scanning through this topic:

Jon Stewart

Daily Show's influence is one i'd put over people like Gervais, Norm, Eddie Murphy, or Joan who i'd consider possible 4ths too. but of them, i gotta stick with Jon.

switch Jon Stewart with Robin Williams.

can't believe i forgot him. that man's standup was absolute gold and his bit on golf is one of the best of all time. his movie career half the time was improv too; they literally could not write him into parts, that's how good he was.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron
The Last of Us
Tetris
Undertale

went for a mix of fantastic visuals, storytelling, and immersion for the first two. different weight on 'em and i don't think anyone else will mention El Shaddai even though this is the one category it has legs on.

Tetris was picked for its simplicity and its ability to grab a player and keep them attached to it. in terms of something that's mastered the art of a video game, little tops it. i do wonder if Baldur's Gate 3 will end up on the short list here when it's complete as well but too soon for that.

Undertale for its uniqueness and also trying to take video games to a different level as not just a game but an experience too, without losing track that it's a video game. that's the pitfall i find lost in a lot of the more pretentious ones.

on the one hand, Thanos and Vulture can be complex characters but Dafoe's Green Goblin is probably my favorite. nothing overly complicated or difficult to understand, just pure malice and evil. if it was any other actor i don't think it'd have been the same. sometimes i just want a villain to be a villain and he embodied that.

just gonna round myself out here:

Hulk
Yoda
Kermit
Wicked Witch of the West

greatly underestimated Kermit, Wicked Witch was off in the "I know but I forgot I know" thought process initially. amusingly the weakest here might be Hulk, which is funny because he's also the most relevant today thanks to Marvel's movie success. not for too long or by as much though, Wicked Witch has part 1 of the Wicked movies with Ariana Grande this year; Yoda has Baby Yoda from a few years ago and whatever Disney wants to do (teenage yoda when).

oh. well that's fair, i don't think people realize her influence, that movie's influence, or nuance of TV back then. like you hear it in passing, see the extra media that came out of it - Wicked especially - and have a general idea but it's kind of a tired line. but that would put her with not just influence in movies, musicals, horror, depictions of witches, and the timespan is def long enough.

What do you feel about the Wicked Witch?

has a place for sure, more than people think. Wizard of Oz didn't just popularize witches as green, it possibly invented that notion. typically witches would have all kinds of colors to them but green ended up being the color chosen because 1, it looked good and scary, 2, it looked poisonous, and 3, it looked good on TV too.

that last bit is a big one too. black and white TVs could not display white very well and if you wanted that color to appear, you used green makeup. this is partially why Frankenstein's monster is green as well, and probably a precursor to a lot of horror.

Calling 2D Mario dead up until that point is super misleading. I mean, I see what you're trying to say but it makes it sound like it hadn't sold or been good for a while, they were still super beloved and played.

there were literally no new games in that time period, everything was a port.
if it was any other series what else would we call that?

like if we had FF1-6, then no new FF games for 16 years but just a bunch of ports, would you not say it's dead? that's just the reality of how little there was in that category. it was all 3D, ports, and nothing more until NSMB.

Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario 64
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

game that started it.
game that moved it to 3D.
game that revived the series in 2D.
literally one of the best selling games year over year over the past almost decade and represents spinoffs better than anything.

really is impossible to deny NSMB as a success story. it's weird seeing as much fighting over it, fact is that's what redefined 2D Mario again and it has the numbers to prove it. hell you can even use time as the measurement - the list of new 2D Mario games goes from World in 1990 all the way to 2006 with the DS NSMB. Wii version comes out 3 years later and sets the standard. that is a 16 year gap. the DS didn't quite do what Miyamoto wanted it to do but the Wii one did and it's how the game is played now. 2D Mario was straight up dead until that series came up and the most influential entry is the Wii one. which is funny because 2D Mario proved, with that series, to outsell its 3D counterpart with ease.

Diamond Dust Zone (Act 1) - Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn/PC)

def a weirder one however this one is actually played outside of Sonic or video games - it's straight up a Christmas theme that gets played publicly without people knowing it.

I dropped it because after Gamecube the Nintendo consoles start getting hard to categorize. They start to feel "in-between" generations. Wikipedia lists the Wii U and the Switch as being in the same gen, which... I guess? But it made things awkward so I felt it was easier to focus on the consoles that are more obviously sorted into their era.

Nintendo's a weird one to categorize because on top of underpowered console hardware, handhelds are consistently a generation behind in tech but with all the experience and development made. I just go more or less by time period which is what I think most people do as well, and that's why Wii U/Switch fall together. Switch was basically a 3DS successor in hardware and a replacement to the failed Wii U.

also anyone talking level design and gameplay is really sleeping on 5th to 6th. it's not just graphics, the biggest improvement was to game physics. the graphics helped on that in that it allowed you to actually visualize clearly, interact clearly, and move in ways that couldn't be done before because, simply put, neither hardware nor software was there yet. as in we literally didn't have the tech yet. for some perspective on this, over on PC land Unreal Engine released in 1998, 2nd was out in 2001. Xbox used DirectX, Nintendo used something similar to OpenGL, Sony was... well, Sony.

survival horror got things like Fatal Frame, Silent Hill 2, RE4, none could've been done before. platformers got things like Ratchet and Clank, action/adventure got Metroid Prime, action got to exist in Devil May Cry and the evolution it had by the time it got to 3 was enormous along with games like God of War that tried a bit of platforming. Katamari Damacy is an easy example of scale and object interaction along with crazy physics that you didn't just see but you made. the PS2 Ace Combat trilogy on gameplay and cinematics, MGS2 and 3 on gameplay and cinematics. turnbased RPGs didn't have much to improve on beyond visuals but action RPGs were able to become a genre that could exist (see: KH) and the concept of freely moving around in combat became real between Tales of Symphonia, Abyss, and Star Ocean 3 (which wasn't a good game otherwise but hey).

oh yeah, can't forget the importance of storage either. between DVDs and yes, even the Gamecube's mini discs, the increased storage helped a ton. the generations after are definitely a case of diminishing returns but that's because it was the 6th gen that managed to reach a level where things worked as opposed to trying to figure out.

5th to 6th wasn't just better graphics, it was better engines, better controls, better hitboxes, etc. it was an enormous leap in gameplay.

4th to 5th was a huge leap because of the third dimension and the leap it brought but 5th to 6th is the one that let you use that in all kinds of games and created many, many new genres. basically the older gen was trying something new, the newer gen was perfecting what it could actually do, in every genre.

only 3 locks due to a mix of infamy and legacy. there's worse games out there sure but for standout games known for being bad games they kind of dominate the field. modern games are difficult to ever reach these levels because 1) there's so much crap out there that you can legitimately go "shitty game of the week" and never run out of content, even better if you scale it back to 6 months; 2) patches and re-launches exist to fix games drastically (Cyberpunk, FF14). but there's a few instances that do stand out despite that, usually because the game was so bad the studio died or, if they survived, they drastically altered direction. Warcraft 3's remake is a good example of the former, Umbrella Corps the latter. but the king of that i think has to go to:

SimCity

it killed Maxis, the company that made who knows how much off of The Sims.
it was the game that really started the whole "always online" bullshit and utterly bombed at doing it.
it was the biggest reason why EA became back to back winner of worst company in the world.
i don't think there's anything that remotely compares in the last two decades.
