Wanglicious 04/13/24 11:51:45 AM #54 | actually Starcraft vs. Halo is a great example of what i'm saying too in terms of Frog vs. Master Chief.
44% of B8 said SC > Halo, 24% of the brackets did that. 51% of B8 said Frog > Chief, 22% of the brackets did that. both are contest upsets. not because of a 7% difference of opinion on B8 that are close to 50/50 but because 3/4 of people didn't see it coming. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. |

Wanglicious 04/13/24 11:45:29 AM #52 | that's a pretty good one too!
though i don't see the spirit of the question that way either. if 78% of people who made brackets all said 'yeah this guy wins' and then he doesn't, that's very much so a major upset by definition. that's how many picked Chief. it's Contest Upsets, not B8's opinion on contest upsets. or phrased differently, the matches people freaked out about, as opposed to the one B8 did. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. |

it's also just plain a really, really great movie with a time traveling romance that warms the heart and has a soundtrack to match. besides, i like the idea of a non American movie, hell a movie released in the current century, to be on the Mount Rushmore because so many of these options are old. they're great but variety is nice and the quality absolutely measures up. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. |

if you think AMERICA FUCK YEAH it's not a green lady holding a torch, it's an eagle, a flag, maybe some guns, and if there's any structure it's the White House. America became the symbol of power post cold war so you can say it's the seat of leadership but said seat is "leader of the free world" and "most powerful country in the world." so any movie talking of destroying or invading America will need to destroy the White House; any spy movie that talks about America security will need to talk about and/or include the White House; any movie or show about leaders of the world will need to feature the White House - especially something like West Wing which literally takes place in it. then you get into jokes and parodies (e.g., South Park) and those all will again be the White House. especially post Trump for that aspect. we can also go a step further into real world scandals where it's regularly been brought up between Clinton, Bush/Chaney, and Trump. you just don't get that with the Statue of Liberty. you'll get shots of it or its destruction (especially if you need to destroy NYC for some reason or another) but it's more in passing and a much smaller deal than the capital being destroyed or brought up in shots. i don't see it as often or as relevant in most of what's consumed and for better or worse it's a consumer heavy world. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. |

Wanglicious 04/08/24 11:25:46 PM #88 | it's funny but DKC vs LttP on this category is one where i just have to side with DKC as the bigger deal. for scope of the SNES it was huge; the visuals and music made a revolutionary push towards the mainstream, it helped keep the SNES alive right as the PS1 was launching, it scared the shit out of Sega and helped continue their series of mistakes. bluntly it was just plain more popular and had become the representative of the SNES, getting viewed as the successor to Mario.
i mean, it didn't really play out that way in the long run today but for a console rep i think you've gotta give it the nod over Zelda, even if more people think LttP was a better game. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. |

Wanglicious 04/07/24 5:40:32 PM #65 | i mean a lot of games were big deals at the time, including games that just made genres. GT1 has the ability to say it refined the racing genre from what was there but has the issue of racing games already existing on the console (e.g., Ridge Racer) and arcades not being completely and utterly dead, though the PS1 was definitely a huge part of it and GT1 can say it was partially responsible for that. it's a case of we would've definitely gotten to this point sooner than later as things were progressing in this path. that's in opposition to new 3D platformers, new 3D adventure games, and survival horror to name a few. none of which had really existed previously in console form (PC did have all this but PC was a more complicated and expensive mess).

Final Fantasy VII Metal Gear Solid Tomb Raider Resident Evil boring first two. Tomb Raider was huge at the time and PS1 was the main place it sold. big enough for it to have a movie 5 years after release with Angelina Jolie in her prime. only argument against it is that PC existed as a reasonable 2nd pick. Resident Evil kinda dwarfs all the other options at this time. RE also has the same movie situation, only 6 years later. that by itself proves that RE4 wasn't the needle mover since the game came out 3 years later. but for the game itself, its importance early on was proving CDs as a medium and 3D graphics, both of which made the N64 and Saturn look inferior consoles at the start of that war. like Crash is a mascot but wasn't as big a deal as those two series with any game, Gran Turismo honestly should've won PS2 but not here, where we have a lot of new games and genres existing and it just... kinda gets lost in the shuffle. weirdly boring options. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. |
