FO3 just does not hold up.
i do wonder how Goldeneye will be after the N64 recompiler stuff gets to it. having it be native to Windows, with full mod access, constant 60 FPS, etc will potentially make it feel like a new game.
KH is a good one because once the novelty wore off and we replayed whatever HD remake we could get the game became painfully clear that it's just... not very good. the music is still great, the everything else is not. especially combat.
Sonic needs at least a mention in this column because dammit, people were praising Adventure like it was an amazing 3D game when it wasn't even at the time but holy hell has it aged badly on top of that.

stuff like Chrono Cross doesn't work for me here because while it reviewed well, users were always split on it.

android is superior for phones but they're not really competitive in the tablet space. like every couple years a new company springs up with a great one and then you don't hear from them again, this go around it's OnePlus post the price drop. few years ago LG had a couple, as did Huawei, before they got blacklisted in the US anyway. i don't know how Lenovo's are but i expect them to mostly be competing with Samsung so probably not very good.

if you explicitly do not want a walled garden then sure you can find it but it takes a lot of looking for it. reasons for that will include legit reasons like customization, maybe better hardware, specific (and I mean very specific) connectivity, price for value, and of course, piracy. but if you want a good, functional product out the box, consistent updates, and a far better app market (which will include games and compatibility requirements of games), it'll be iPad.

Metroid Prime's influence is honestly on games that branched from the genre and became their own, like Souls games. there really isn't much else like it, instead they opt for either more combat, more exploration, or more difficulty (technically this can be either one but becomes its own subgenre at a certain point).

a lot of Souls clones miss the mark because they don't understand what came before it and that i think is where MP shines. it broke down how you can do 3D action adventure exploration in a perfect blend.

so technically its influence on the genre isn't there because it was the launching point for new ones.

Yakuza was nominated in 2020 for best RPG and lost to Rebirth.

hm, so Rise/Sunbreak are $20 and World/Iceborne is the extra $10 after that.

honestly i think i'd rather wait for yet another Capcom bundle and see if World/Iceborne are in there. just plain don't care for Rise.

right now it's probably Yakuza and that's a JRPG. i certainly think it has better odds than Rebirth.
the niche JRPG vote would probably go to the upcoming Trails game. the ones i have no confidence in are Space Marine 2 and STALKER 2.

the first 3 kinda feel like they have it locked up if trying to avoid repeats and outright represent different genres/phases of the genre. the last one is odd man out but honestly it has a case in terms of absolute quality as well as being a nice inspiration for future games. technically if i was thinking more legacy i might think wipeout more but GX is just that damn good of a game that it deserves to fight for that spot.

DmC had the guy in charge say Dante would be thrown out of a bar if he looked like that and then decided to make his self insert the lead, acting like that guy would be the coolest around. then they acted like 30 FPS for the game was acceptable in any way and the combo system was dumbed down to ridiculous levels; all those things were known before the game launched. dude was an ass and the game deserved to flop almost as much as the mobile game does. 4 was better, 5 was amazing, it's rightfully regulated as "look even after the fixes and upgrades it's better than 2 but that ain't saying much."

only exception i'll give is the spanish dub. mexican donte is cool.

it's a good game, is reviewing well, but if you're seeing an excessive amount of people praising an 8/10 game and calling it a 10/10 one, you gotta look at the fanbase and realize oh, there's a built in base here and they're going to give additional points to it because of where it's coming from. if the game was bad it'd get dunked on pretty hard too but instead it's a nice indie success story on all fronts, from the one man team to the file size to the publisher. the question was why is it getting extreme praise and all the "10/10!" when it's not and, well, that's the obvious answer.

the praise is coming because of who the publisher is.
big mode is dunkey's project of going from youtuber to gaming publisher and this is their first game released. basically he made a promise that games released here would be of a certain quality and he's living up to his standards.

i look forward to Superman 64 getting mods that turn it into an actually good game.

oh another thing i thought about today:

sugar.
where the fuck is sugar in the drinks? the vast, and i mean vast majority of drinks you'll find mention they're diet, they're low calorie, and anything that isn't will have warning labels on it. nice of the government to require that in a way but the end result is seeing drink after drink saying they've got aspartame and sucralose. like over here it's bad that we have HFCS in everything, JMAF is the translation over there iirc, and you'll sometimes find that too. but if you're looking for beverages that just have basic ass sugar you're left to some fruit juices.

some of them will also throw in sucralose. like all of these sugar replacements are awful for you, worse than sugar even. hell, sucralose was just confirmed last year to essentially function in the body the same way as sugar on all the negatives except it has more negatives to it from potentially damaging DNA to making people think it's better because look no calories. aspartame meanwhile is just constantly in the "nooo it's ok!" from that lobby when really the damn thing is a poison too.

sure i'll have all these things, but light amounts and i'm keenly aware of it all. i'd rather just have plain old sugar. stevia seems fine. monk fruit seems fine. but while i can find those alternatives here, i couldn't over there. the closest replacement i got was making sure you got the right juices and then getting a bottle of seltzer water to do it yourself.

caffeine is another issue there waiting to drop - so, so, so many of their meds have caffeine in them. like over here we call that Excedrin, which is just acetaminophen/paracetamol (same drug, different name by region of the world), asprin, and caffeine. over there you'll find caffeine mixed into damn near every drug combination you can ask for. while a safer issue than the sugar alternative one, it's one i fear in the long run for.

i'm... genuinely confused on how this is even doable.
like he mentioned how it works, i don't understand how somebody figured out how to make it work like that. hell, this is the kind of thing you wonder if Nintendo knew how to do/could know how to do within a few years.

emulation turning into just skipping the emulating and just making the game change systems is just not something i figured would be doable. and with this happening does that mean that this could be possible with other systems too?

unfortunately true, which is why i end up going back to cartoons. comedy sitcoms are a good avenue too, Peggy Bundy from Married WIth Children and Lois from Malcolm in the Middle are go-to as well. cartoons however get the benefits of 1, everyone gets a personality and 2, nobody ages so you can do 20+ years and be relevant.

and i'm staying away from anime because while technically they're on TV, it just feels like a different subsection. otherwise ChiChi would totally be up there as well. ...though can't think of many more actually. they're plot devices there but not actual major characters either for a lot of series.

if anything Phoenix Wright is the weak link of this lineup, though i feel modern representation from a different part of the world is important too.

you missed Activision Blizzard in that list too but yeah, that list is literally western studios and Sony, whose big dogs are western studios too. Square Enix belongs in that category as well though also doesn't get as much ire. they do put out flops too though, like Forspoken. also can't ignore CDProjekt as a new entry to that list considering they literally became bigger than Ubisoft after Cyberpunk.

yeah i'd sooner say it's more that the giant western studios kept bloating themselves to a point that they're popping. like bethesda was always gonna be a bubble, same with microsoft when they decided to buy like half the studios out there. eventually there's gonna be things that die, get reborn, and repeat.

settling down, a couple things come up.

first, the price of leather goods. they're cheap, of good quality, and can be found in the street markets which occur regularly. San Telmo on Sundays, Boca daily, Recoleta Saturdays, there's more i missed. high quality bags or belts will also be there, prices will vary from shop to shop and even more if you're being tourist taxed (see: no price listed and they come up with it on a whim that's very out the ordinary). bear in mind i still didn't bother with things like leather jackets or shoes because frankly i don't have any reason to get a leather jacket and i have more than enough shoes here. wallets and belts though? very useful and nice stuff to find.

second, i already mentioned the pro and con to the beef but i should go more in depth: if you order meat in a restaurant just go for the best cuts. steak and egg is a common one you'll find in the more overpriced section and is never worth it. hell, eggs are priced similar to here in the US, same for all fruits and veggies. that part's surprising really, a lot of basic groceries were not cheaper but similarly priced, maybe within a dollar. restaurants meanwhile are priced way, way cheaper and meat in particular will be a better value there. there's some exceptions, i did go to one of the high ends and had an absolutely fantastic shrimp sandwich but this was a good $100 USD for 2 dinner, with a couple drinks involved. over here i could see that be double the price and that's roughly what the high end essentially is - half price for similar quality as you'll get in the US (didn't do the 2 star michillin place but that's also how they price themselves, 0.50 - 0.75% US equivalent). for more standard places, mentioned it already but can easily be found for $40-50 for a meal for 2, drink included. do bear in mind however that the more authentic it is, in Buenos Aires anyway, the less salt and spice you'll find. even their milaneses which are prided on, breaded meats, will lack in flavor. some exceptions will exist, high quality sandwich shops in particular will be better at it, but note that difference. pork meanwhile, much easier to have in those standards. choripan is just chorizo and bread and you'll be good, common enough street food to find for $2-3 USD. more than that, you're being tourist taxed. also empanadas are great, at a consistently good price, where the price range is $0.60 - 1.20 USD. those actually will have spices and things inside to add to flavor, so i don't really get why the restaurants are the way they are. oh, burgers are a great one too - don't need to do much to that kind of meat, it's extremely tender, and great cheeses exist over there too so they end up being a great bang for buck every time. highly recommend burgers.

do however, mind terminology. bife de chorizo = only beef, it's a strip steak/New York strip. steak scallop = no actual scallops, just steak. i don't understand how the second exists but it does and it's disappointing. did also try other country foods there to see how they compare, Japanese is meh, Chinese is meh, Venezuelan is good, Colombian is good. Pizza there usually sucks but i did find a spot which was actually genuinely amazing and it was at a great price, in an area within Boca.

Garrison totally deserves to be on this. from teaching in South Park to becoming Ms. Garrison to going back to Mr. Garrison only to become president of the United States, there are zero teachers who have had more character evolution or twists and turns than this.

Frizzle stands out as a teacher for a generation that grew up with magic school bus, which is a lot.
Professor X is kind of a gimme.
Roshi is an anime pic because anime has so many teachers/sensei that he's just eternally there as literally Goku's teacher.

Hi-Fi Rush though, that's a surprise. feels like something backstage happened there as there's no obvious reason to release a studio fresh off an extremely loved game release.

Fate is the #1 of the genre for this.
Steins;Gate is significant enough with its anime, multiple releases including steam, and best represents that semicolon series.
Higurashi > Umineko in importance and scale, even if i like the latter way more. it's just more significant.
Rance needs an entry considering it's been going on since the 80s, represents AliceSoft, has had a ton of influence in the industry, and Sengoku is just flat out one of the most addicting games i've ever played. it's also the inspiration of a ton of games afterwards.

i mean we don't need to imagine it, Playstation VR and VR2 happened, with the 2 not having any backwards compatibility. so everything on the 1 is done, everything on 2 is unique to it, and it's on hold from production because mysteriously nobody bought it.

and i just figure they mean it won't get any new updates or whatever. game should work, if it doesn't then pirates will make it work as always.

okay naming schemes aren't their strong forte. it's clearly meant to continue the same legacy as big NJPW belt but in its infancy i find it remarkable to see all those people win it, then go to AEW. or be in AEW.
