The anime: kooky old king forces Aang to choose a combatant for his final challenge, knowing full well that Aang is just clever enough to pick him under the assumption that he's a feeble old man, only to dramatically whip off his frumpy robes and reveal he's secretly a crazy-powerful earthbender.

Netflix: depressed middle-aged dude in inconvincing old-man makeup walks into an arena, takes his shirt off, and starts chucking rocks.

What did they say?

IIRC it wasn't the dialogue that stuck in my craw so much as Aerith was over-gesticulating her every animation like a J-Pop idol on ecstasy - cringey behavior in any context, but especially when you're trying to rescue a little girl in the few precious minutes remaining before a literal city falls on your heads. Which might explain why I can't remember whether it was in English or Japanese. I guess it's a moot point anyway, since it's a single half-remembered prerelease clip versus all the other clips I've seen since which were much more tolerable.

I've seen a pretty sad number of people play it the first time and actually go back thru it again...

I mean, you can just use the Staff itself to exit the cave without damage, right? I guess I couldn't say for 100% certainty since it's been so long since I got it without the Magic Cape, but it'd be a pretty weird proviso if the Staff of Byrna protected you from all damage except spikes.

Honestly my biggest reason for not wanting to play either of the FFVII remakes is that I don't know if I have it in me anymore to deal with extensive anime dialogue.

I'm...kinda in the same boat. I remember several years ago watching the scene of Aerith rescuing Marlene from 7th Heaven before the plate collapse; it must've been the Japanese version because it was unbearable, as in "holy shit, this can't be how the creators envisioned these characters in the original game, can it?!"

I think the American version must've gotten some good localization though, because other scenes I've seen since then are much better.

I don't want to throw up a ton of spoiler tags so I'll say that I was still into the series right up until the conclusion of the the battle of Thunderclap; that was the point the series finally started going off the rails for me and never fully recovered.

Ironically, the only part after that that I genuinely liked was the ending ending, aka the ending that's supposed to be so bad that King breaks character to tell you not to read it. If for no other reason than it gives Roland, his ka-tet, and myself hope that one day they'll all get a conclusion to the saga that isn't shit.

One of the best digs at the adaptation I've seen thus far was "The Netflix characters are like the Ember Island Players versions of the OG characters." Admittedly I only saw them in that one brief scene (stopped watching after ep.4), but that's exactly what I thought after seeing Mai and Ty Lee.

On the subject of Suki, if they were determined to mix things up and do their own take on things, they should've had the stones to go ahead and have Suki leave and join the Gaang right then and there. Would've fit right in with the new take on the character - repressed girl living dutifully in her mother's shadow gets the chance to leave and see the world and finds the courage to take it.

Apart from being attractive (no point in trying to pin that down to a list of traits; I'm either attracted to someone, or not), I'd say a long-term partner's most desirable quality would be pragmatism and the ability to learn and adapt, especially when things get tough. Having dreams / faith / a spiritual side is both great and desired (I have all those myself, after all), but not at the expense of being present in the moment and dealing with things rationally; I need to feel like my soulmate would deal more directly with problems and not make excuses, lie, or get easily suckered by other people's lies. My family has put up with too much grief over the years due to inflexible, irrational relatives who do everything in their power to avoid the reality / responsibility of any given situation.

Because honestly, if that one hurdle gets met, I feel like everything else would fall more or less into place.

I really liked Fallout 4. But I also played more recently and enjoyed it for what it was. I notice the people that hate on it the most had a very specific expectation for the game. And when it didnt hit that they wrote it off as horrible. Thats their prerogative but that group became a vocal minority.

Most of them won't admit it, but too many people went into Fallout 4 expecting it to hold a candle to New Vegas. My expectations were a little more realistic: in my book, all it had to do was improve upon the aspects of Fallout 3 that pissed me off the most, and make settlement-building fun; for my tastes, it succeeded on both fronts (not every change they made was a good one obviously, but contrary to the usual Bethesda MO, they actually took more steps forward overall than they took steps back).

Personally I ask myself this question: can I still enjoy the game without mods?

Skyrim: fuck no. I will never waste another hour on the drab, shallow, ugly-ass vanilla version of this game.

Fallout 4: surprisingly, yes. In fact, I recently made it about halfway through an unmodded playthrough on Xbox to see if that would improve the game's piss-poor stability (It didn't), and apart from the crashing, I still had fun. Vanilla combat is enjoyable, the DLCs never really disappointed me the way Skyrim's did, and the DLCs + Creations give enough new options beyond crap shacks and Minecraft blocks to keep settlement-building fun.

The protagonist voiced dialogue just brings down this whole quest for me. It would have been funnier if he tried sounding like the silver shroud instead of saying it all sarcastically

Sounds like yet another instance where the female MC VA is superior to the male: she brings just the right amount of tryhard goofiness. And like I've said in past topics, one of my favorite things to do is punk Sinjin's lackeys into running away scared by having her calmly say in her normal voice 'I'm going to wipe out every last person who points a gun at me' after talking like a cartoon character for the entire rest of the quest.

ANort posted...
The fact that you couldn't stay in the Silver Shroud persona the rest of the game was a real letdown.

Yeah, that would've been nice. They at least throw you a few bones here and there; if you're wearing the outfit you can speak as the Shroud when confronting the Mechanist at the end of the Automatron questline. There's also a random encounter with a dude who thinks he's Manta-Man, and you can greet him as the Shroud as well (too bad FO4's random encounters are terribly unreliable).

I don't recall a single interesting quest. Except maybe the pirate robots.

Apart from 'Last Voyage of the USS Constitution' (which I agree is the game's standout sidequest), I had a lot of fun with 'The Silver Shroud.' For as much as people praised FO3's 'The Superhuman Gambit' quest, it was way more fun being the looney wannabe superhero than just dealing with them.

'Confidence Man' is another good one; more involved than your standard 'go to place kill guys' quest, and changing the game's radio DJ's personality by boosting his self-esteem is a neat mechanic (even if Nervous Travis is vastly superior to Confident Travis entertainment-wise).

I'm also personally fond of Curie's questline. The Vaults in FO4 suuuuuuuuuck on average, but Vault 81 is at least half-decent.

EDIT And of course how could we forget the sheer brilliance of Bethesda's masterwork 'Kid in a Fridge?'
