Sample size isn't worth anything statistically, but gives you an idea of the mindset of "undecided voters".

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/some-undecided-voters-not-convinced-by-harris-after-debate-with-trump-2024-09-11/

Harris and Trump are in a tight race and the election will likely be decided by just tens of thousands of votes in a handful of battleground states, many of whom are swing voters like the undecided voters who spoke to Reuters.
Although the sample size was small, the responses suggested Harris might need to provide more detailed policy proposals to win over voters who have yet to make up their minds.
Five said they found Harris vague during the more than 90-minute debate on how she would improve the U.S. economy and deal with the high cost of living, a top concern for voters.

The Trump converts said they trusted him more on the economy, even though all said they did not like him as a person. They said their personal financial situation had been better when he was president between 2017-2021. Some singled out his proposal to tax foreign imports, although economists say that is likely to raise prices.
Four of those six also said Harris did not convince them she would pursue different economic policies than Democratic President Joe Biden, a Democrat they largely blame for the high cost of living.

"I still don't know what she is for," said Mark Kadish, 61, an entrepreneur in Florida. "There was no real meat and bones for her plans."

Robert Wheeler, 48, a security firm executive in Nevada, was leaning toward Harris before the debate. He now says if the election were held tomorrow he would vote for Trump, largely because he thought Harris didn't provide clarity on her policies.
"I felt like the whole debate was Kamala Harris telling me why not to vote for Donald Trump instead of why she's the right candidate," Wheeler said.

People act like this game single-handedly destroyed the entire gaming industry when, for one, the gaming crash was a US thing, and for another, the state of the US console market was an actual catastrophe that deserved to crash. ET (and the Pacman port) basically just tipped the scales to where they were inevitably headed anyways.

This video was overhyped and I'm disappointed. >_> Girl fell into the alt right grift trap of arguing over definitions and semantics (never mind the alt right gift trap of participating in this bullshit spectacle to begin with), and was relying to heavily on a single understanding of "life" to support her argument.

Also, minor nitpick, being a "parasite" doesn't preclude something from being a living thing, otherwise mosquitoes wouldn't be considered alive. >_> (unless she specifically meant a certain subset of parasites, which goes back to my original disappointment that this argument was just tussling over semantics)

The reason this bugs me is that the definition of "life" is a largely arbitrary one, that can and probably will change as science advances. I can't imagine this girl or any other pro choice person would change their stance if the definition of life suddenly included fetuses.

Nevermind the fact that "life" alone should never be the sole deciding factor in whether or not termination is morally acceptable, otherwise euthanasia would be off the table.

Hell, using "viability" as an argument is a bit precarious because as technology improves, the minimum age of viability is only going to get lower and lower.

Personally I think any argument for abortion should stay far the hell away from any technical or mechanical aspects, because the only thing the pro-life side cares about is if the thing is alive, which you will never convince them otherwise to begin with and future advances in science will only make it easier for them to support that argument.

I think arguments for abortion should probably stick closer to arguments about sapience, autonomy, and consent. (For example, that stupid 88 year old dementia patient he brought up. Main thing against him is that the patient would've had the opportunity to consent to euthanasia, and if he didn't, then killing him would be wrong. Or that there do exist people on life support in a vegetative state that others make the difficult choice to terminate)

Remember how you can actually get quite far under normal water physics, so a new player has no reason to suspect they're not supposed to be here yet?

Remember how the game waits until you're deep in the frigates asshole before the hint pops up that you should've backtracked to a completely out-of-the-way part of the map to get the gravity suit?

I'm not fundamentally opposed to Sonic having a human love interest except that this franchise has a history of bringing in new characters for exactly one game and then forgetting they exist. (Quite literally, in the case of 06 lmao)

That and there's only so much time in a 6-hour platforming game about cartoon woodland critters fighting mad scientists and eldritch horrors that you can devote to "romance" so any satisfying romance would have to be a character whose had enough screentime with Sonic over the course of the series.

You play most of these games to have the " Most up to date Cards" but now its just a quick look at how it use to be and then there's no reason to not go back to the more modern ones...unless you really like being killed by Kaiba's Cyberstine Megamorph Combo.

Some of the later games are still pretty fun to go back to because they're a time capsule of a long-dead format that people still enjoy. (I think I've heard Nightmare Troubador is good for GOAT and one of the 5Ds games is really close to Edison)

These games kind of fill a niche because they use a unique ruleset and the progression makes them feel like RPGs more than a card game simulator. But the GBC games are so barebones, you can tell they were made for grade schoolers with too much time on their hands. >_>

Art and presentation?

Ecclesia > Sorrow > Portrait, with Ecclesia only edging out Sorrow because Hirooka's somber, gothic art style is *chefs kiss*, and because I prefer its wider variety of locale.

Map?

Ecclesia > Portrait > Sorrow

Sorrow just felt like it had too much bullshit and backtracking for my taste. Ecclesia and Portrait segmenting their maps into different levels made them a lot more manageable. However, Portrait makes you do that stupid circus level twice so fuck it

Story?

Sorrow > Ecclesia > Portrait

Sorrow only narrowly edges Ecclesia because I like how it advances the dracula myth. Just feels a lot more dramatic in scope. Ecclesia was a well executed character focus for Shanoa/Albus but since the main plot is so basic it feels kinda gaiden-y. Portrait is a fine little family drama.

Gameplay?

Ecclesia > Portrait > Sorrow

Souls are an annoying gimmick and Soma feels kina clunky compared to Jonathan/Charlotte/Shanoa. Portrait improves the movement and replaces souls with a better magic system. Ecclesia's difficulty means you're engaging more with enemy patterns and mechanics so it just feels more fun to play.

Overall?

Ecclessia > Portrait > Sorrow

Really just comes down to Ecclesia being the best, Sorrow annoying me the most, and Portrait falling in the middle by process of elimination.

Chrono Trigger: AOE control is vastly underutilized and cool stuff like Cyclone or Flamethrower become completely pointless after you unlock your 2nd tier spells that can nuke the whole screen. Also, 65 Million BC isn't very fun. Despite how important it is to the story it just feels like filler every time you're there.

Persona series: The Social Links are a cool idea but I hate that the relationships are largely static, and the only thing your dialogue affects is how quickly you can progress.

i think it's a little off to call any one enemy 'good game design' when they don't really function in a vacuum; medusa heads work in castlevania because castlevania works on gradually increasing the complexity of the player experience by introducing more and more simple rules.

an enemy flying in a sine wave pattern isn't an issue by itself and in a hallway. but the player is expected to be able to deal with other enemies and to platform as well.

the axe knights aren't complex, either. but the hallway is. it tests the player's understanding of each moving part.

I mean everything exists as a part of a greater whole. >_>

What I love about medusas is how much mileage they get out of such a simple concept. You can put them in almost any room to make it more challenging without being "cheap".

Horizontal rooms suddenly make you have to consider verticality. Vertical rooms' pacing becomes more precarious. Zoning normal enemies becomes more dynamic. They're just so versatile. >_>

They do one thing: fly in a sin wave. That's it. They don't try to trick you or fake you out. They won't suddenly dip lower or pick up speed. They're a completely predictable, static obstacle.

But they still manage to be pretty involved to beat. They test how well you've mastered your jump arc and whip timing in a way other enemies can't because Medusa heads will just keep coming until you leave their spawn area.

Like, that hallway leading up to Death in the first game? One of the best segments in any video game. And it's all thanks to the Medusa Heads.

If Era 1 was a 9, I think this was a 6.

Alloy of Law was fun, but bad. Shadows of Self was decent. Bands of Mourning was good. The Lost Metal was fantastic.

Overall I think the biggest disappointment was probably that there was no overarching story. Just a series of buddy cop adventures with some continuing background plots that were setting up wider cosmere shenanigans. That and the worldbuilding just wasn't as fun this time around. Era 1 Scadrial felt so alive with so many moving pieces. Era 2 Scadrial felt like we were only seeing a sliver of the world. A major part of "modern" Scadrial was a class divide between the nobility and working class, between Elendel and the outer cities, yet we only ever hear about these concepts from rich people musing about politics and wringing their hands about revolution and civil war. Which I could probably forgive except these ill-explored social struggles play pivotal roles in the plot of the first three books lol.

Oh and the fucking Roughs. The most interesting addition to the new version of Scadrial and we almost never spend any time there in four goddamn novels what the fuck Brandon. >_>

Other than that though it was a fun ride. I liked the sort of "wild west Batman" feel of the stories. I liked that even though it felt like Sanderson had tapped out on Allomancy's potential in the first trilogy, he still managed to evolve it in interesting ways that pushed the story forward. I really liked Trell/Autonomy and thought they were a very interesting concept for a deity. I liked pretty much every time Marasi, MeLaan, or Steris showed up. I liked seeing Sazed and Marsh again in their roles. I'm not too sure I'm fond of Kelsier's return. Maybe if I read Secret History it would've worked better for me, but I liked it better when I thought he had gone for good. But I do love Kelsier so I can't really complain.

Gotta say early on I wasn't sure I was on board for Mistborn Era 3 (whenever that comes), but Lost Metal turned my opinion around and now I gotta see what happens next.

I feel like in the pushback against alt-right whiners, people overcorrected and make some games sound a lot more political than they are.

There are certainly political themes of environmentalism in FF7, but narratively speaking Shinra is just the archetypal "evil empire" but with a dystopic corpo aesthetic, so the politics feels incidental rather than actually trying to commentate on anything. And pretty much every "political" slant of the story goes away after Sephiroth shows up and the story becomes "chase the dark wizard trying to blow up the world".

The sole exception to this being Barret's backstory, which is pretty a good anti-corporation story that ironically extols the tragedy of technology making coal obsolete. >_>

The main problem with wizardkind is that they're all a bit touched in the head and can't fathom a life where every mundane trinket isn't distractingly obnoxious. "Oh wow, paintings that don't curse at you while you're trying to read? A bin that doesnt try to fly away when you want to put rubbish in it? Whatevet will these quirky muggles think up next!"

This failure doesn't exist in any of the half-bloods we see in the series.
