Jabodie 03/01/25 3:31:28 PM #64 | Turns out monsters you kill when Gau shows up on Veldt don't go into the bestiary... I had to track down Intagir again, this time with a full party to prevent Gau from showing up. Thank goodness loading quick save in PR does not reset your encounter group on Veldt. Still took a lot of loading to get Intagir again though. --- <insert sig here> |

Such a shame that Quasar is a poor man's Grand Delta that you get long after Grand Delta (unless you visit Kefka's Tower early for some reason), because it has one of the coolest animations in the game, at least by 1994 standards.I got it done, thankfully. One thing that's rage inducing is that 1/3 of the time Dark Force will self destruct the turn before it can use quasar. Now I have about everything aside from Siegfried, Intagir (didn't feel like beating it on WoB so I'll track it down in Veldt), and items + Rages. I don't think I'll item farm in any meaningful way, but I'll take a look to see if I'm missing any. If it's not too many, I'll track them down. I might grind rages for a bit too. Justin2Krelian posted... I agree the story drops a bit in the WoR... but it's really not like Chrono Cross at all. 8 of the 14 characters are fairly well developed and have a solid arc (maybe 9 including Gau), while iirc about 40 CC characters never do anything once they join you, other than react with different accents during dialogue. That's fair. I still think I would prefer a more focused character roster, or at least a strong leader of the group. I am a little biased because I took some breaks during WoR, so my more favorable WoB experience is much farther away. --- <insert sig here> |

Jabodie 02/25/25 2:23:26 AM #39 | saspa posted... Yeah CT is a truly unique game and was quite mindblowing at the time for its gameplay mechanics (heck the no battle transition screen alone sets it apart) but quite frankly it doesn't really have much of a story and the game devs didn't really focus on its paper thin characters, it wasn't a priority. That must be the DQ influence part of the so-called "Dream Team" including the whole silent protagonist thing which I naturally dislike (and why FF 4 blew me away the first time I played it). So that's why it isn't my favorite of the big 3.I'll admit I haven't played CT since I was a kid, and it was the DS version. Ultimately, I quite like light hearted, adventurous romp type JRPGs. It's part of why I liked 5 so much - my first play through was in this run of games. And 3 DS just had these little additions and difficulty adjustments that added a lot to the experience for me. And for some reason, I kind of missed the at style. 4 I've only played on PSP and PR. As an aside, part of this topic is expressing that I basically messed up my experience of the game by playing it wrong. It's like of I went for S+10 ranks on the Gummi ship missions in KH2 as I went on my first playthrough. That might be enjoyable after I already like the game, but kind of stupid to force upon yourself the first time through. Edit: I'll also note I thought the story was really great through the end of the WoB. --- <insert sig here> |

The only completion stuff that sucks in FFV from what I recall was Gau's rages and to a lesser extent Strago and Mog if you permanently miss some lore/dances.I think I oppose the Cursed Shield on principle. I'm also not a fan that only Odin teaches Meteor. Thankfully I saved just before converting to Raiden so I could roll that back. I've definitely abandoned going for completion due to Gau. Another thing about FF9 in particular, there's also the Excalibur II that complicates things, essentially making you have to speedrun the game to get it. While it doesn't necessarily make it impossible to get everything else beforehand and still make it to the sword in time, it does add complication in conjunction with the missable aspects of the jump rope and Hippaul minigames. For my sanity, Excalibur II would need to be sacrificed. Jabodie 02/25/25 1:59:36 AM #30 | PraetorXyn posted... Thats beyond what any reasonable person would call completion. I mean its what I do, but I cant really help it, and besides, Gau is badass.I'll admit I had a lot of fun with Gau in WoB when I kept up to date on the rages. But after introducing enough enemy formations into the mix, tracking down particular rages became difficult. Especially because I did not get every formation, which makes it a little more trial and error to figure out which formation I actually had. Also menuing with Gau became very cumbersome. I usually just go with stray cat out of sheer laziness. I also don't like menu memory, typically. Ideally I would have only filled Gau with a handful of very useful rages instead of pages of stuff. The PR version should have explained the commands with each rage imo, but there's a classic charm in trying them out and memorizing. Edit: Anyway, Gau is clearly intended as something of a "second playthrough" type character imo. You're not supposed to min/max him the first time through, and I found myself bogged down my tracking his progress and finding rages. --- <insert sig here> |

The Ancient Castle, Odin / Raiden, each character is side quest, the Fanatica Tower, etc. 4 is still my favorite though. Those quests are fine, and frankly most of them blur with the "main content." Gau and the bestiary are the worst parts of the game. Especially since not all rage enemies are tracked in the bestiary and the game is absolutely loaded with one time chance enemies. I'll admit I have no interest in pursuing Coliseum fights for item completion. The Cursed Shield is mostly harmless, and with a 4x AP booster I can teach Meteor to characters before losing Odin. --- <insert sig here> |

FFVI is that game where I do feel like the narrative is certainly stronger in the beginning but it was neat to just do whatever you wanted at the end too.I find the majority of games I enjoy (on the order of 70-80%) are quite enjoyable from a completion standpoint. JRPGs of the SNES/PS1 era are the usual exception. I.e. FF1-5 are quite fun to complete (Edit: caveat that I used the pixel remaster boosters for some of the grindy parts). 7 is as well. 9-13... no. 15 pretty fun. 8 is probably fine, but I never liked 8 enough to do more than make sure to grab missables. For the nonlinear back half, I think it must have been quite novel in its time. And 6 is still the best story by a good margin in the first 6 games (although I am quite fond of 5). --- <insert sig here> |

Topic | Getting to the end of FF6... not my favorite FF (spoilers) |
Jabodie 02/24/25 10:56:14 PM #1 | It is primarily because I like to play JRPGs as a completionist, but this game is clearly not meant to be played that way. A fair amount of annoying side quests and bestiary entries (deathgaze, cursed shield, gau, coliseum, a bunch of random rare encounters) and lots of missables. I've decided on abandoning Gau completion, since it is very complicated. I intend to be theoretically able to compete the rage list, but I will not finish. The characters seem very unbalanced as well. Sabin is very effective with little effort and investment, but somebody like Setzer seems to need some kind of special setup. My party comp seems to be feast or famine - 1/2 of the cast destroys, the other barely gets by. The large cast has a similar issue as Chrono Cross, where character development is spread very thin, especially in the WoR. In WoB, each character was reasonably well fleshed out and had a nice character setup, but I have found most of the WoR arcs very lacking and disappointing. I see this as a sacrifice for the nonlinear story and large cast, but it does not land for me. Part of this is how I approached the game. If I ever replay this game, it will be with thorough disregard to the annoying side content and missables. It seems things in this game are sort of meant to be missed, and the back half of the game is more about a nonlinear romp to gain power as it see for for the ending. Of the six games in the pixel remaster, 6 has probably been the most mixed for me. However, if I played this game more how the design seems to want me to (follow various threads at my whimsy, explore the WoR and discivet6 for its own sake), I bet I would have had a better time. --- <insert sig here> |

Do you really need to watch Avengers 1, Black Widow, End Game, Daredevil, and whatever "prerequisites" to those to enjoy the show? No, not really. The show gives sufficient context on its own so long as you but into the general concept of superhero movies and understand superhero tropes. And I wouldn't recommend anybody slog through a bunch of other media to "understand" Hawkeye. Maybe enjoying this show will make a viewer interested in the background. I even think something like Agatha All Along can be enjoyed without WandaVision. Not quite as smoothly, I think, but the setup of the show isn't unusual for a "new" story. --- <insert sig here> |

So TC you're not getting any of the Wii Fit games for the Wii Fit Trainer?I realize now that I did not include "Switch game" specifically in the title, which is the real basis here. But I am considering adding a few extras to the collection outside of the Switch down the line. It's a real shame I can't edit the OP, because this limitation was the whole point and the driving logic behind the list. This idea was born out of an idea of a Smash Ultimate collection for Switch specifically. I looked at the roster and thought to myself "How many of these characters are actually represented with (physical) games on Switch? Is it possible to get a compete collection with representation of every single character physically?" My real goal with this thread is to see if how this collection would look when limited to the Switch platform. Is it possible? How tenuous do the connections need to get to complete it? R.O.B. is probably the most extreme so far. Moving this to all Nintendo platforms, my preferred picks would probably be very different and prefer their "premier" home console release, or the first game where they were the titular character. SMB for NES for Mario, Luigi's Mansion for a Luigi (Mario is Missing sucks), that DS game for Peach, etc. Daisy massive Super Mario Land. Dark Samus is clearly MP2 or MP Trilogy on Wii. But some entries become much clearer. For instance, I would 100% take MM in 3DS for Young Link and WWHD on Wii U for Toon Link. All of the FE games would be their respective titles (Shadow Dragon for Marth, Awakening for Chrom / Lucina, etc). --- <insert sig here> |

Jabodie 12/31/24 1:48:25 PM #21 | 55) Pac Man - There's a few options here I'm aware of like the remake of the ps1 game (which isn't very good imo) and the recent Pac Man collection (which has input last issues). For this, I'll go with Pac Man Championship Edition 2, which has a nice physical release on the Switch. 56) Robin - FE Warriors? Engage? 57) Shulk - Xenoblade Chronicles DE. I'm really feeling it! Back Slash!! I really liked this one - played it once on Switch. Being able to adjust your levels by banking xp was super nice. I liked the characters and story - it was fun with a satisfying ending. 58) Bowser Jr. - various Mario titles probably work here. I'll go with 3D All Stars for its inclusion of Sunshine, without a doubt Jr's must relevant appearance. 59) Duck Hunt - I think this is an NSO one. Make he shows up on one of the WarioWare Switch titles? 60 and 60e) Ryu and Ken - Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. Maybe the new MvC collection too if you prefer. 61) Cloud - other regions have a FF7/FF8 double pack physical release, and that is my choice. Technically Cloud is in Crisis Core Reunion as a supporting character, but I strongly prefer the original FF7 here. 62) Corrin - gotta be in one of FE W or FE E.... 63) Bayonetta - Bayonetta 3 is probably the best choice here, although I greatly prefer 1 and 2. 1 is an insanely fun game on harder difficulties. 2 is really fun for casual play, and I still got platinum on every chapter on every difficulty despite the bullshit introduced into some enemies (I'll admit I lollipop cheesed certain verses in places). 3 was okay, but I've only played it once on normal so maybe there is more to it on harder difficulties. But I've never felt the need to return. I wasn't huge on the enemy design of the demon summoning mechanics. 64) Inkling - Splatoon 3 baby. I probably played the salmon run tower defense mode more than any other lol. Good times. 65) Ridley - Metroid Prime Remastered for Meta Ridley 66 and 66e) Simon and Richtor - Castlevania Anniversary Collection and Castlevania Advance Collection. Simon of course stars in the original Castlevania and the SNES remake (maybe 2 and 3 as well, but IDK much about those) included in Anniversary. The Advance Collection includes a port Castlevania: Dracula X starring Richtor. 67) King K. Rool - sadly, I think we need to resort to NSO again. DKC or DK64, CLASSICS. 68) Isabelle - Animal Crossing NH again, similar to Villager. 69) Incineroar - Pokmon again. 70) Piranha Plant - Well, plants didn't start walking until Super Mario Wonder. They even get a musical number in that game. --- <insert sig here> |
