really early RPGs like Ultima, Wizardry, and Might and Magic were a lot of dungeon crawling with blank slate PCs much like many tabletop games at the time. As the genre morphed into dragon warrior and final fantasy and the like, the namesake stuck around. But, you're mostly right.

Turn based. I don't want to be penalized for interfacing with menus. I set my preferences to "wait" when ATB is an option (a la FF6).

that said, imo, FFX is ATB as stuff like Lancet and Quick hit account for dynamic turn order, which is awesome. FF1, Persona, and Dragon Quest games are fully turn based, imo.

Odin Sphere is a very solid game. It's mostly a platformy-fighter but it has some RPG elements to it.

Dragon Crown is a side scrolly beat em up, with a bit of Diablo on the side. Lots of fun with couch co-op, solo it's average to above average.

I'm salivating over Unicorn Overlord, but it's not released yet.

this mostly stemmed from a corporate lobby / business interest where someone broke into an IVF clinic and "accidentally" caused a lot of embryos to die. Wanting both revenge and justice, recent legislation allowed embryos to be deemed as humans so the assailant could get charged with multiple counts of manslaughter, with little to no foresight on how this sort of ruling might affect IVF clients (or pregnant women in general)

I like D4 more than D1 and D2. The addition of a dash button alone is a big improvement. D2 was basically "get two abilities for single target and AoE, and left or right click accordingly until everything dies"

Got it about a month ago and blasting through the season; made it up to Tier 4 world already and enjoying it. I'm not yet at endgame, but another season is dropping mid April so I might just make a new character and level with them and get them towards endgame, if endgame itself is pretty lame.

the story is decent and it's a fine solo experience. It runs into the open world issue of "everything is always available and here's a lot of shiny side quests which lead to more of the map which lead to more side quests" so sometimes you need to actively knock out campaign stuffs.

Great for its time . Killer soundtrack and I sunk tons of gametime into the Ancient cave.

Only average nowadays, imo. The story is pretty generic, the difficulty is rather easy (especially if you ancient cave ASAP). I think the addition of capsule monsters was a good concept to tweak/customize the party a bit, but only 2 were worth a damn between their usefulness and frequency of fleeing. The handful of very bugged maps are a sad reminder of rushed production.

1) With the rise of Steam and mobile games, there are now waaaaay more games than in previous generations and the hobbyist FAQ writer population is about the same as it's always been.

2) Big, expansive games (Baldur's Gate 3, e.g.) are too much of an undertaking for any single writer to fiddle with (much less a lot of branching if/then aspects)

3) The presence of wikis or highly scoped articles fills roughly the same niche as FAQs, and can easily be done by a relatively large squad of people.

Yeah, FAQs are dying. A lot of it is technology driven. They're basically the equivalent of landline telephones imo.

You're a closeted dude who's confused about their own gender expression. You absolutely have a meaningful, personal, and relevant experience that has commonality with tons of other LGBT+ people. If you don't wanna share it because you feel it's not your place, that's bullshit. If you don't wanna share it because you're worried about outing yourself, that's frustratingly normal. Pick your battles :p.

If the legbutt things you're referring are things like gossiping about gay culture, like the latest episode of Ru Pauls Drag Race, know that culture is not some monolithic thing. I don't watch the NFL (any football, really), but that doesn't mean I don't participate in "straight culture", lmao. If you don't like female pop stars or drag, that's... perfectly fine.

If the legbutt things you're referring are things like conversations with idiots who think trans people both aren't real but also are a physical threat to children, it's possible to come across as an "ally" (aka, a straight person with empathy) and positively contribute to the conversation.

philsov
02/23/24 11:19:32 AM

Yeah, I had a similar scenario (5 year relationship, engaged, cohabitated). In the short term it's gonna suck. But eventually and slowly, you'll be ready to open up with someone like you did with your ex.

Yes, a lot of haunts y'all went to together are going to be oddly reminscient for a while. And music that was somewhat shared hits different. There was a night like 4 months after the breakup, hanging out with some friends at a bar, where the dude doing karaoke did one of "our" songs and I just started balling and left the bar and cried on the curb for a little bit.

There was a fair amount of introspection, too. Like, things I should've picked up on prior to the break up, or things I should've done or said differently. I blamed myself for a lot of it. But, through either honest logic or wishful thinking, I eventually came to the realization that even if I did all the things perfectly on my end, they still did X, Y, and Z. They had their flaws, too, and the overwhelming likelihood is we would've broken up regardless. I chalked it up as a series of "lessons learned" and applied them to my future (and better) relationships.

Also for me there were some wild vacillations regarding sex. The validation was nice but there was a month where I had like 20 partners. And then there was a month where it was 0.

I felt I was ready to legit date again a little after 6 months, but that's an above average timeline. You'll be ready when you're ready, lol. And even then, I might've used these dates to still get further over the ex. Which wasn't fair to the people I was one date(s) with, but to be fair those people also used me to a small extent. People are weird.

Oh, they're awesome. And it plugs any holes you have from party composition. Like the only way you'll get AoE healing is taking Kevin on the light path, but in doing so you don't get "badass werewolf". Hawkeye, if he goes Light, can also get the debuffing items which would normally be the incentive to him going dark. I suggest trying to abstain from that market as much as possible, but the option's there.

There's no moral consequence for going light or dark, you just get different stats and spells and color palette. Sometimes you'll get a Full Screen Tech (FST) and those tend to be awesome for when your weapon gauge is that high.

Menus were always that slow, yeah.

The 3D remake I highly recommend in general as they add in a few more quirks to combat (dodge, AoEs, a jump function, etc) and some passive skills you can customize with.

It's a very fun game I've replayed tons of times thanks to the dark/light customization tree and how your chosen MC will provide you with a ~10% variation in storyline and one or two cool scenes and different bosses.

Kevin and Hawkeye are both top tier imo. Double attack is just that strong, haha.

If you want to break the game, there's the night market in Beiser. You can buy magic items which recreate spells (like AoE heal light, all sorts of elemental attacks, and stat up/stat down ones).

Edit: I think it's rather funny how the absolute worst party (which is still quite strong) is the "Secret of Mana" party of Duran, Angela, and Carlie.
