hello ce. i am making my triumphant return to spread the gospel of cinema. time to catch you up on what i watched :)

afire - this movie is about a pretentious guy who goes out of his way to make himself miserable while on vacation with a friend and a hot babe. very literally me. funniest movie of the year, highly recommended. streaming on criterion channel !

you hurt my feelings - lady hears her husband saying her new book is bad. there are like ten variations of this scene and/or conversations about lying to your partner to make them feel good and be supportive. not sure it needed that many. got a bit boring after awhile. forgettable! rentable on digital platforms.

are you there god? it's me, margaret - good episodic movie based on what i figure is an ur text of modern coming-of-age stories for girls. some nice digital sheen and kelly fremon craig gets some fantastic performances out of the young lead (idr her name) and rachel mcadams who has the milf hotness. highly recommended! rentable on digital platforms.

no bears - iranian director jafar panahi, who has been arrested on multiple occasions for criticizing their government, makes a movie criticizing the government! he plays a version of himself in a border town where he is remotely directing a movie about a couple trying to leave iran. meanwhile the border town is ultra suspicious of him as he's from the big city and theyre just traditional folksy people... you get the idea. lots of static shots of people talking, as is customary for iranian new wave movies. highly recommended! streaming on criterion channel.

how to blow up a pipeline - solid little thriller about some activists plotting to blow up a pipeline in rural texas. it has been heavily criticized by ultra lefist movie fans but their criticisms are kinda eye-rolly to me. it has enough tension and red herrings to be a worthwhile watching. recommended! streaming on hulu.

the blue caftan - moroccan film about a closeted guy and his wife making traditional garb in a beach town. things get complicated when they hire a new employee who is also closeted. i wish they would have fleshed out the new hire a bit more. everything with him felt a bit thin. great husband/wife performance tho. good enough! streaming on criterion channel.

eileen - this was a great movie about a femcel obsessing over anne hathaway, which isnt surprising bc who wouldn't, but then the last 20 or so minutes happened. really weird. not sure that was necessary. great digital sheen of 70s massachusetts though, much like the holdovers.

how to have sex - some english school girls, including a virgin, go to some party destination town to get shitfaced and fuck. really great first half as we watch them have fun and bond with other trashy young people. second half not as good after the you guessed it, sex but i think the second half does capture that feeling when you were young and uncomfortable but trying to hide it from others. it just goes on a bit too long. recommended! currently in theaters.

perfect days - some old dude washes toilets in tokyo every day. it is as boring as it sounds. you get why this is done eventually - things begin to disturb his routine - but it all seems kinda condescending. of course cleaning toilets is GROSS and EMBARRASSING so you gotta make sure the audience understands this by having the guy's family be ashamed about it. also laughed when i saw a review saying that robert zemeckis would think the needle drops are too on the nose ( they use lou reed's perfect day and nina simone's i'm feeling good ). bad movie! currently in theaters.
