Without trying to be offensive: its always nostalgia goggles combined with limited horizons and survivor bias. You dont know about the massive amounts of shite from the past and you dont know about the good stuff from nowadays.

the movie in the OP was part of the back end of a double feature and has less than 1,500 views on letterboxd (interstellar for example has over 3,000,000). this isn't survivorship bias lmfao this is a random quota quickie western that looks better than any movie to come out in 2023.

Are you sure thats not one of those older films remastered in HD or something? Its kinda trippy when they do that, seeing an old film that looks like it was filmed in the past 5 years.

I find that films from the mid-2000s have more noticeable mixed quality

there's a french bluray from 2011 that this guy might have taken this from. most of the rips im seeing are taken from tv or streaming services tho.

i'm not sure why whether it was remastered or not would matter tho. it isn't like these movies looked bad(?) on original release. their prints shown in theaters would have been as pristine as the dune 2 or oppenheimer prints going around recently, just they would have damaged after hundreds of showings or just aging. which is the purpose of film restoration and HD remastering... to get them to look how they originally did.

Digital isn't the issue. How cinematographers use lighting in relation to digital sensors is the issue. Better Call Saul was shot all on digital and it looked amazing. They used the fucking Varicam for a season or two and it looked nice af.

The advent of digital photography is great imo. It's democratized filmmaking which is a good thing. It's still in its infant years tho and we're still figuring out the kinks.

not surprisingly the best looking movies each year are shot on film. also succession was shot on film and is the best looking show i can think of in recent years (except it had shitty mckay vision with shaky cam and whatnot).

im convinced most sets throughout film history look that shitty but being shot on film made it look less fake. switching to digital photography is the worst mistake for cinema ever.

if this is a complaining about the fallout show topic, all I have to say is that I wish modern TV shows and movies would start creating two audio mixes:
one for normal people, and one for people who primarily watch movies on phone speakers. this audio was very obviously mixed for phone speakers.

i'm sick of having to adjust EQ whenever I watch something made after 2014.

watched fargo and true detective s1's but don't really remember them very well. think i did an ep or two of s2 for each and didn't bother with the rest. dropped hannibal after a few eps. managed to finish chernobyl but it was really, really bad. i tried cowboy bebop and had to drop that after a few episodes. haven't seen wire or sopranos will get around to those eventually when i have 70 hours to spare or whatever. the knick is one of the only good shows ever made and not surprisingly each episode was directed by GOD soderbergh.

have also dropped the americans, the good place, parks and rec, barry... probably some other stuff that is "good" too

point being that i'm not incurious about television. it's just not good.

You made an all encompassing topic about television being low rent, then post preview clip of a show that is not even out yet. Its not far out to think at some point in this show, at least two actors will have been on set together.

If you want to illustrate how low rent tv is, shows like The Bachelor and The Voice would be better examples.

the bachelor and the voice aren't narrative fiction like fallout or succession or last of us. so i don't think that is a good comparison really. not sure why it being a preview clip has to do with anything. amazon literally chose it to be the first scene released to get people hyped up and it looks awful. very confusing. disturbing even.

I don't think television is a low-rent medium. But it's longer form nature does often mean that cinematography can often take a back seat compared to film, where there are fewer shots and more time to work on them.

Like the shot-reverse here is pretty boring and doesn't add anything to the scene or storytelling. I don't know if it was done because they really didn't have all actors available at once or if they were just going for the easiest possible shoot.

That said, it's one scene out of an entire show I'm not about to condemn it or the medium based on a single scene.

i'm condemning the entire medium based on this and other examples. also "it's longer form nature does often mean that cinematography can often take a back seat compared to film" - i would argue that the vast majority of television pretends it is not a visual medium and puts next to no effort in visual storytelling or language. instead it just likes to capture actors saying dialogue in medium close up. this defeats the purpose of even capturing it on camera. you could just write a book or play and have it be more effective.

yeah. or they could just be curious and find stuff themselves.... i dunno. i didn't go to film school and still got into old movies, and it was before college age. i follow a lot of critics and historians who are also teachers on twitter and they often mention that most students aren't interested in film or television but are attending so that they can have better looking content for youtube or tiktok or whatever.

i saw it on 70mm and have decided all movies should be projected on film. has anyone ever thought of this? imagine if all movies were shown that way in theaters. that would be sick.

i like forums more than social media or reddit. you can get to know personalities and have longer more formal discussions. and this is the only forum i really know about considering i've been coming here since 2006 and everything else has died/is dying (like here) since then. i stopped following gaming news around the time of the gamespot exodus tho. don't game a whole lot either beyond a baseball management simulator on steam. dev makes a hockey game too you should try it out. i have a ps5 but sometimes go a couple months without touching it. great for playing 4Ks too.

had my suspicions confirmed many times. like when i saw the trailer for EEAAO and was like "this looks like horrible bullshit" and i started reading all these hyperbolic reviews from people with sus taste. then a friend said "its like if edgar wright directed a dan harmon script". after that i knew in my heart it would be the most annoying reddit movie ever made. then i saw it and wow i was right. that movie was irritating as hell with its epic bacon humor and nicecore themes. all because i, zithers, am the god of film writing interpretation.
