Oppenheimer was clearly the best movie and should win, which means the academy will give the award to a movie like Anatomy of a Fall or Poor Things instead

oppenheimer has won every guild award. there is almost no chance it loses. too many shared voters in the academy and the guilds.

Correct. Also many of those 10000 members have acknowledged they don't watch all the nominees anyways and vote for whoever their buddies are part of. The campaign behind an Oscar win is often more fascinating than the movie itself.

i think the academy's attempt to diversify in the wake of metoo and oscarssowhite is pretty cool tbh. they've added thousands of younger people and international voters while shedding the old white dudes who were grandfathered in. they publish who is invited each year. obviously campaigning is a huge part of it but that's just the name of the game. and it isn't like its a bad thing. neon is very good at it and parasite won. that was a watershed moment. same with a24 and moonlight/eeaao. like is it bad we are seeing more diversity in terms of representation and movies doing well?

i mean i don't really love this year's lineup but it is decidedly not oscar-y compared to what you'd see in the 90s when weinstein was running hollywood. poor things is weird yorgos shit. past lives is an extremely lowkey romantic drama. zone of interest borders on experimental at times (and isn't in english). the holdovers is a shaggy throwback to 70s dramedies. barbie is a candy colored comedy. anatomy of a fall is a foreign movie and we've seen a huge uptick in those being nominated in the last few years.

idk. i just don't see how this inherently draws in more viewers man

And if those "serious" movies were enough to keep people happy, why'd the whole dang academy decide to expand the category to appeal to the lowest common denominator? Bringing in viewers is absolutely important to a televised program.

did you know the oscars had 10 best picture nominees back before television existed? were they doing that for ratings?

also did you know the academy is like 10,000 voting members and not a handful of people having clandestine meetings where they're conspiring to get more popular movies nominated for best picture? which doesn't really happen since the expansion happened anyway?

The reason they expanded the best picture category like 10 years ago is so they could throw in a blockbuster or 2 and hopefully get more viewers. Much like the Grammys catering entirely to pop now, the big awards shows are about the spectacle over the art.

first half of the movie is just explaining stuff and/or setup

this is all just lore building or incredibly ham fisted telegraphing what is going to happen which kinda ruins the dramatic impact. instead of like i dont know getting to know the characters so that we can feel bad when they inevitably die? you don't have to slavishly adapt the book you know. not that big of a deal. just make it better. easy.

think the only good scene in the movie is the worm attack on the harvester. that was neat. there should have been more cool shit with giant sand worms.

started laughing a few times at unintentional comedy. like when he's mad at his mom in the tent about being a freak. or when he has visions of the future. we see a soldier doing cartwheels over guys and slicing them up super easy. face visor lowers and its a forlorn timmy. was howling. so ridiculous. scrawny ass dude trying to act like jackie chan or tom cruise or keanu reeves while looking like he could be 130 lbs soaking wet.

and what is with the ending? mom does her quick defense against bardem and all of a sudden there's some fight that has to happen. timmy fights this random dude super fast. bardem 'is he toying with him?'. terrible fight choreography btw. and then he kills him and that's it. that's the movie. oh except for the 'on the next episode of dune.... riding worms!' part after that. man. pretty much nothing of consequence happens in this movie. like am i supposed to be awestruck by this knife fight? kinda comes out of nowhere to be the 'climax' of the movie. i don't get it.

on top of this why is every shot just a medium closeup in a big giant brown/gray/yellow room? doesnt denis know how to direct conversations? why do people like this guy? movies are a visual medium, can't you do something interesting within the frame? no? just a bunch of cgi? ok....

really wish this movie was just pulpier and less serious. you have a guy with psychic powers that is the messiah to some witch cult and some sand people. weird creepy albinos with human/spider pets. a dude named duncan idaho. giant fucking sandworms. sword fights. drugs flying through the air that cause interstellar travel on top of the hallucinations. shouldn't the movie be... i dunno... kinda goofy and weird and fun? instead of nothing but funereal solemnity?

anyway can't wait to see dune 2 next week. there is no way it could possibly be worse than part one so i got something to look forward to.

Believe it or not, I did appreciate the awards. But you guys seriously need more voters, as Asteroid City winning so much is likely due to just random sampling of a few guys that really liked it. BTW, I liked it too and gave it an 8, but Grand Budapest Hotel it is not.

10 of 14 voters had in their top ten movies so i think everyone just liked it basically. same with killers. there's some flaws in the process because consensus does tend to center on one or two movies. killers and asteroid won 6 and 5 awards. fabelmans and drive my car won 5. portrait of a lady on fire won 6, as did parasite. phantom thread won NINE.

so yeah that's why i presented the jury list version to really show of a variety of what we appreciated this year

I did also like Transformers the Movie but Aliens has been my favorite movie since I saw it when I was like 8 or 9 years old. My brothers and I used to watch to watch so much stuff on VHS that my dad and his friend would rent and bring over to our house and then we had Prism and HBO and saw even more stuff on that. Just because you're a kid doesn't mean you only watch "kids" movies.

yeah i think like that tweet says tho, people younger than us having streaming services curating algorithms solely centered on kids stuff. meanwhile we'd just see shit we were 'too young for' pop up on cable and be like whoa this rules.
