#174: Horror Land
From: Mario Party 2
Nominated by: Simoun (4 songs remaining)

Now we get to the "FFFFFFFFFF I have to regretfully put several songs out early tier" with the Horror Land theme. It has catchy moments, as observed when you listen, and surely the music sets the atmosphere for this area in Mario Party 2 (which I admittedly never played. My Mario Party history is 1, 4, and 8). But when compared to a large portion of this list, it falls short. And in some ways, despite being a horror land theme, some of it has slight circus-esque elements to it.

Well that's because it's called Horror Land, but in actuality, the theme was more "Mystical and Supernatural", which would explain why the music appears to be of the carny persuasion as opposed to something downright scary. Not having played MP2, I can see how you can come to that conclusion.

Memoria (PC) is done. Oh my god, I'm in tears. I finished Chains of Satinav last year and I've been meaning to finish the duology. Definitely recommend to anyone who loves both high and low fantasy adventure games. Playing the first is not necessary but highly recommended.

Love this game, strong front runner for my GotY.

Crimes.

Is it like Oxenfree or Life is Strange?

The Night of the Rabbit (PC) is done. Good game. Lots of quirky characters, but a rather anticlimactic ending which tries to go for a sequel hook. But so far, none.

In fairness, they also made the Whispered World in 2009...and its sequel which is in-universe only anyway just came out last year.

Dear Lord I finally beat Eyes of Ara (PC)

I wanted to continue my Myst fix after Quern so I played it and got the usual vibes....only some of the puzzles were straight up tile sliders. You encounter this 5 times, and it really breaks the mood of finding things and switches and stuff. Arrrgh!

Claire: Extended Cut (Vita)

Alright, I've played this and Lone Survivor now and I'm honestly not sure who these games are made for. The difficulty is 100% derived from finding which is the right door out of a hundred doors in a deliberately confusing layout. The stories are nonsense. They aren't scary.

They're trying to copy Silent Hill 2's success

It was never meant for any anime but the cd originally came with the manga. It's a unique situation, don't you agree?

If you'll allow it, I'll swap it out with one of the five up there.

They remastered Dear Esther? The one from a few years ago? It wasn't very old and I didn't think it was big enough or liked enough to warrant a remaster...huh.

Probably pretty though, I bet.

They remastered it in 2012, then recently again and called it the Landmark edition. It looks pretty

Nuts. I'll have to find a way to play 999 then. I cant find it anymore in stores.

Also, I just finished Sherlock Holmes and the Silver Earring (PC). Logic was never my strong suit, and I was glad the final reveal was hands-off and one big enjoyable cutscene.

Aaaand I've finally beat Black Mirror III (PC). Excellent trilogy. Not for everyone I suppose but I guess it can pass for an alternative to Gabriel Knight.

The first game was extremely slow-plodding though. But it was a nice ride.

I thought it still had a lot of good ideas! These were just such puzzle adventures, and I'm terrible at puzzle adventures. Sad to hear he isn't proud of them anymore, too. I was a fan of these games long before he started Zero Punctuation

Oh they are good ideas. I was there when it was still paid and indie games weren't a named genre yet. Not to say that he isn't proud of them at all, but he treats the quadrilogy like any early work for an artist; a necessary stepping stone to the stuff that he makes now.

Trilby's Notes (PC)

It was spooky, sure, but I had to follow a guide the whole way through. How did people ever play these 'type an exact command or nothing will happen' puzzle games and why did Yahtzee think it was a good idea to bring that back?

In a recent retrospect, Yahtzee admits that his Quadrilogy was really poorly made and poorly plotted. It was an old shame of his that he'd rather never bring up again.
