Given the amount of times he's shipwrecked, who's to say? His adventure boils down to three absolute truths.

1. He gets shipwrecked/walks dumbfounded into the city/otherwise just shows up for the lols
2. He EXPLAINS THE SITUATION
3. He finds the nearest blue haired girl (90% of the time) and solves their problem.

Nothing else makes Ys Ys other than those three things.

Ys tends to change its gameplay every few games. Bump mechanic, straightforward hack/slash, then the ABC weakness system. I have no fucking idea what they'd mean by "Soulslike inspiration" but whatever. Ys was doing "you better fucking dodge or we'll murder your health bar" anyway. I wouldn't be shocked if they mentioned it because nearly every game won't shut the fuck up about being "Soulslike" in some way.

Kuro no Shoukanshi: Another isekai where the guy drags along a goddess. Sounds like a serious take on Konosuba's premise, which sounds awful

First arc of Twelve Kingdoms done. Started the second arc, and I like the fact that not only does Sugimoto remain a sort of focal point, the show is exploring effects of being isekai'd on the original world. I still struggle with all the Taiho, Taiki, Ranka language overkill from time to time, but this show does so much with the parallel world concept that even recent shows don't bother doing.

I played the first one a couple weeks ago when I knew this was coming out. I was pleasantly surprised. Fully voice acted, great characters, and some brutal scenes. I just wish the QTE segments and trial and error timed Somnium sections didn't suck so much. I hope they improve those bits.

Crunchyroll hasn't uploaded episode 10 of Spy x Family's English dub yet (though Japan is up to 11 already). Guess I'm just gonna make progress with Twelve Kingdoms then.

I remember reading the manga a lot. They never dubbed the show (at least I think), so it slipped through the cracks. I got around 8-10 chapters before my library ran out.

Twelve Kingdoms started. Already my speed. Hearing all the old school VAs from the early 2000s is a nice bonus.

I think if the show stopped talking at me like I was an idiot, I'd be less annoyed.

Ugh. It's like they are speaking aloud their class, stats, superpower, motivations, etc, rather than talking like a person. Even if a character is a stock characters, the show should convince me they are not just blabbing out a character creation sheet.

Not sure I am describing it the best. It just seems, unnatural and off-putting.

He's fighting that black haired lady in ep. 3. While "summoning up the courage to fight" or some such, Subaru turned to the camera and said, "and for those at home" or something dumb.

For a guy who should have been in Madoka Magica mode by now, Subaru kept acting like a tit. The writing kept doing this wink and nod stuff, and drove me up a wall. I just never understood what the show was trying to go for. It has moments of brutal edginess centered around a weird "say everything aloud so even the five years old understand this is what we're doing" meta humor.

I sure hope I'm wrong to do so. I get being in on the joke, but it's so fucking direct, it's almost a gag reflex how "meta" it's trying to be. For a show that is super popular, the writing sure seems super fucking dumb, even by isekai standards. I'm shocked the guy didn't stare at the viewer shrugging his shoulders.

Edit: The more the episode goes on, the less I'm hating it. I'm still waiting for the dope to stop the full on meta shit and then maybe I'll like this more.

Speaking of Bookworm, it's kind of amazing how little it seems to deviate in quality. Never getting "better," never getting "worse." It does a few different things here and there (with a shit ton of timeskips for some reason), but 30 eps in, it's just pleasant and nice to watch. It's probably because Myne's always one scene away from continuing on with whatever stupid book making plan she has, regardless of all the shit the world keeps throwing at her. It's kinda like a lesser Spice and Wolf. It's intriguing without being ABOUT anything, or maybe the pacing is just fast enough to be absorbing, but not slow enough to be outright fucking boring.

MAL did list it as a 6...that wasn't a good sign, since 7 is the usual "decent" threshold. Then again, this thing was competing with Nagatoro as the other thing I stumbled upon. I wasn't seeing much good in that one.

Trying to find a new show on Crunchyroll. Happened up ln something called Platinum End. Might take another episode or two to understand, but that angel practically justifying murder and theft with some fucked up logic is sort of intriguing. Could be interesting, though the end of the episode played at some "death game" hand that doesn't seem as fun as the "despondent loser goes on murder spree with angel's weapons" could be.

I'll see where this goes later. Reading up on it, apparently the guy who wrote Death Note made this. Now things are starting to make a bit more sense.

I took a chance on The Somnium Files when I heard about the sequel. I'm about halfway in. It has some doofy perv comedy and infuriating timed trial and error gameplay, but I love the vibe and premise. Full voice acting for a pseudo-visual novel is also VERY welcome.

I can finish this in about a week and dive right into the sequel.

*Note: I get he's a college student and not some veteran hunter. Doesn't excuse that Castlevania on the whole isn't designed around stupid gullible teenage protagonists. Goes against the whole, "Look at all the blood!"

Outside of his gimmick, he doesn't do much for me. He's super oblivious, gullible, slightly chauvinstic (to Yoko in Dawn). The will he won't he feelings for Mina go absolutely nowhere. This guy is supposed to be a massive killer of demons and other monstrosities. These games don't allow for "dork protagonists" like JRPGs do.

Also, continuing watching Spy x Family, Ascendance of a Bookworm, and Shield Hero as episodes are released. Spy x Family and Ascendance continue to be as good as usual.

Shield Hero seems to have fallen off a cliff pretty badly though. I get the feeling that's what was going on all Season 1 after eps 1-2, but there's like...no edginess to this show anymore. It's just focusing on "stuff" that has little to do with all the Waves and battles and fights and stuff. Naofumi isn't learning all that fun Shield junk either. He also has a new actor that isn't all that expressive (though they had no choice to replace Kametz...bleh).

The show still has Raphtalia and Filo, so I'm not going to give up just yet. But the sooner some dark shit happens to that stupid green haired girl, the better. She's part of the boredom.

My experience is JRPGs, but I didn't have to have it limited to that if someone has an other example that fits this discussion. That said, the hate for the Okumura fight in Persona 5 is hilarious, since their dungeon is also the worst.

I remembered two lesser seen strategies.

1. "kill in a time limit." (Odin/Plague/Walls)

2. "Kill at the same time, or they revive next turn" (FUCK YOU FF5!)

Note: I gave "defensive" and "status/buff/debuff" their own categories. They kinda fit the same mode of cutting or increasing damage, but felt they were distinct enough categories. One boss can purely fuck with you with status effects, while another just soaks damage like a sponge . That's kinda my definition here.

Also, fuck those bosses that heal themselves. Just unfair.
